I'm hoping the Canadian Women's hockey team wins gold this year. My (faint) connection is through family in Nova Scotia. Blayre Turnbull is from Stellarton. She grew up with my nephew and they've been close friends since they were little. I've heard so much over the years about Blayre and she's a terrific girl. She's the first women's hockey player for Team Canada from Nova Scotia (one of two actually). She scored two goals in an exhibition win against the Swiss team yesterday. So excited for her!
Do you have an Olympics connection?

That's very cool! No, everyone I know more likely to watch the sports on TV than participate in them

My hometown has produced more winter Olympians than any other in North America is the claim to fame...alas I have lived away so long now I don't think I know any of them this time around though. Super excited for the Winter Olympics!

My connection isn't to a specific Olympian, but I live somewhat near the Kearns Speed-Skating Oval in Utah. Many of the world's speed skaters come here to train. Some even live here all the time now.

Well no, not really. I mean if you want to play 6 degrees I guess. My cousin’s cousin’s wife’s best friends daughter is there for speed skating.
But I don’t know her lol so no I don’t have a connection.

Being involved in girls hockey we have met a number of Canadian players.... share the same last name as one but unfortunately no relation. When we lived in the Toronto area my DD did a number of camps run by members of the women’s team..... was amazing to have the ladies involved with the younger girls

No one this year unless I can claim Shaun White who lives nearby. As for past connections, my sister billeted a member of the Canadian Olympic snowboard team for a few years whenever he was in Vancouver for training. His conditioning coach is her neighbor. Matt competed in the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 games in the snowboard giant slalom. My closest Olympic connection is a high school friend that won a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles games in rowing. The son of my sister's friend won a silver (2012) & bronze medal (2014) in swimming for Canada.

I have no connection whatsoever to any of the Olympians, but it’s fun to read everyone else’s stories.
In my mind, I could have won the gold in figure skating if I had ever learned to skate! 😁

No for these games. But we do have quite a few state and “local area” athletes and/or athletes who attended the University of Vermont or other area colleges. Also some of the skiers have attended Highschool at the Green Mountain Valley school which is a private school that has a training partnership with the US Ski Team. Our paper and TV stations have done list and profiles of all the athletes who have ties to our area and there are a lot. It was really interesting to read their stories. The disclaimer is that that our area includes Vermont, the North Country/Northern NY, the Upper Valley/parts of NH and Dartmouth College, and Lake Placid where a lot of the luge competitors train. We do enjoy keeping up with how they all are doing.

In my mind, I could have won the gold in figure skating if I had ever learned to skate! Same here, but in my mind I am also a great dancer and unbelievably talented singer! No real connections to Olympians here. The closest I come is that DD met Tara Lipinski (ice skating commentator this year) after she won the Olympics in 1998 and got her autograph when she returned to the airport here. The next day there was a color photo of Tara signing an autograph for DD on the front of the sports page. The photo and autograph are framed and in DD's room now.

Not the winter olympics but the summer ones. I worked with Michael Phelps mother for a long time. We were both home economics teachers.

We’re of an age where the athletes are the children of people we know 😱😄. Dh is friends with the fathers of Mark McMorris and Kallie Humphries, both Canadian stars who will do well in their sports—Go Canada 🇨🇦!

A retired co-worker of mine has a daughter who is competing in the Paralympics. She lost her right leg above the knee in 2011. She had always been very athletic and the doctors said that was what saved her life. She loved snowboarding prior to her accident and made it her goal to compete in the Paralympics after. She placed 9th in Sochi. A large group will be cheering for her all over Alberta. Here she is Michelle Salt

A few years ago at a local Bonspiel my friend's curling team beat John Schuster's team. John won a bronze medal at the Olympic games a while back and is on the current team. My friend said, "We could play against him twenty more times and would not beat him, but we did that one time." Curling is big where I live. People golf in the summer and curl in the winter.
A couple of the men's hockey players play in the college hockey league I follow. They are great college players - will be interesting to see how it turns out on an international level. The women's goaltender, Maddie Rooney, plays for a local college.

Aren’t the female hockey players wonderful, such great examples for the younger girls, when we live din the GTA we would go to see the WHL games and they often had meet and greets after the games...my DD Loved Gillian Apps....

My dd is now playing beer league hockey in university but one of my favourite pictures is of her with Cassie Campbell at a hockeyfest. Every year they would have a different player from Team Canada attend and they were always so good at talking to all the girls, She played right through from novice to 3rd year midget and whenever we would go to a tournament in Toronto we would try to go to a WHL game and the players were great about talking to the young girls after the game. She is a goalie and also had Kim St Pierre as a goalie coach for a season because of some connections of her coach. It was very cool.

I am a high school teacher and one of my students is a speed skater. She didn't try to qualify this time around but she is good friends with Maame Biney. Her brother is also a speed skater and just barely missed qualifying but his girlfriend made it. I can't remember her name but I think she is skating the 3000m and 5000.
