I'm reading Second Chance Cowboy by AJ Pine. Another pop up surprise book. A friend of mine edited it, and she gave me a copy unexpectedly. Because everyone knows about me and my cowboys.
I'm also doing a read along of Grant by Ron Chernow. I started it when I first got it but then I got distracted. It's 1100 pages so taking a break was easy. Turns out one of my friends had the same problem so we're determined to finish together. This week's goal is p 450.

I recently read "One Thousand White Women" I enjoyed this one. It's not great literature but it was solidly entertaining for me, and had an interesting premise.
I also just finished "The Winter People" this was a modern day gothic novel-I enjoyed it-again, not great literary achievement, but spooky and fun

I listened to Just Mercy on the recommendation here last week. It was a really good. About the death penalty and life in prison for children offenders. Really eye opening. Is the author for this book Bryan Stevenson? I'm looking it up and wanted to make sure I got the right one. It sounds like it but I thought I'd double check. Yep! That's the one.

I finally finished Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. I just wasn’t crazy about this book. It bored me and I didn’t think it had much of a story. By the end I wanted to slap all the characters.

My recent reads: The Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama. I loved this book. It is about two Japanese brothers during and after WWII. The characters are well developed. The story is interesting, heartbreaking, and uplifting all at the same time. Women and Children First by Gill Paul. This is a novel about survivors of the Titanic. Fictional characters with some facts about the Titanic. It was a good, easy read. Currently reading My Secret Sister by Helen Edwards and Jenny Lee Smith. This one is nonfiction, written by two sisters who were separated at birth and lived very different lives. They were reunited later in life and wrote this book together. So far I like it. There's a little bit of mystery about what happened when they were born and why they were separated that the book leads up to.

Just finished The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham. Another great recommendation by the Peas. The lives of two pregnant women, one rich & married and one single & working in a grocery store cross paths. The twists & turns kept me turning the pages. 4/5 Stars for me.
Now off to start my Kindle First book for March - Trespassing by Brandi Reeds.

For any Jodi Picoult fans, she announced today her next book is due out 10-2-18. It’s called A Spark of Light. On a Fall morning, a gunman enters a women's reproductive health clinic and begins shooting. Each chapter of A SPARK OF LIGHT spools backward an hour earlier in the day, tracking the lives of the women involved, the medical staff at the center, the shooter, and the hostage negotiator outside.

I also finished Little Fires Everywhere. I liked it but didn't love it. 3 stars. I also finished Killman Creek, the sequel to Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine. I liked both of them. 4 stars. I had to leave the world of serial killers after those two and I'm now reading The Exodus Trilogy by Andreas Christensen. An asteroid is about to destroy earth and 1600 people are sent off to find a new planet to live on in an effort to save humanity. I'm liking it so far. 3 plus stars.

I missed posting last week due to a crazy schedule personally and with work. I only read two books in the last two weeks. 1. Force of Nature by Jane Harper. This book follows Aaron Falk, who first appeared in Harper's freshman novel, The Dry. This is a great sophomore effort. Falk and his partner try to find out what happened to a missing woman after she disappeared after a team-building event in the forest. 4/5 stars. 2. Only Child by Rhiannon Navin. This books follows a six-year-old boy after his brother dies in a school shooting. Told from his perspective, this book looks at how the father, mother and child deal in the aftermath. Very well done. 5/5 stars. Lisa I liked The Dry. Might have to check out the Force of Nature. Thanks!

I read The Great Alone by Kirstin Hannah last week. I speed through it because I enjoyed it so much but then I was left wishing I had slowed down. I picked up The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Society again, I'm 30% through and I just don't get it. I keep thinking it must get better, everyone loves it and it's being made into a movie. but ugg. I don't think I can make it, I haven't liked anything of it so far. I've been shopping to put some good reads on my Kobo for our spring break. A big deal of of bunch of good books being around $2.99 prompted me to shop. Mary W I have My Secret Sister, I haven't read it yet. SabrinaP katiescarlett Our book club is going to read Little Fires Everywhere next month. Eek, hopefully we feel better than you two did.

I read two last year that went that way and found them hard to follow. It will be interesting to see how Jodi Picoult handles that technique.

I don’t mind when the first half of the book does that and the second half goes “present day” and moves forward. We’ll see how Jodi does it.

I read The Great Alone by Kirstin Hannah last week. I speed through it because I enjoyed it so much but then I was left wishing I had slowed down. I finished this one yesterday and thought it was wonderful! Definitely the best book I've read in a long time. It actually made me cry, and I can't remember the last time a book did that to me. 5/5 Now I'm at a loss as to what to start, I feel like anything else will be a let-down. Of course, I said the same thing about the book I read right before this one! LOL!

I finished The Johnstown Flood by David McCullough. It was interesting and informative, though a bit wordy on it seems like every single person ever involved with Johnstown, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the steel, iron, and coal industries! A tragic, preventable disaster.
Now I'm reading Lessons From A Third Grade Dropout by Rick Rigsby. I was prompted to get it after watching a video of a commencement speech Mr. Rigsby gave. Very wise gentleman.
I'l also reading Baby Snatchers, #2 in a series by Bo Brennan; I enjoyed the first enough to try the next one.

Been so long since I cried during a book; probably A Dog’s Purpose and before that Marley & Me. Come to think of it, crying over people - can’t remember one.

I'm reading The House of The Seven Gables by Nathanial Hawthorne. It is laborious. His paragraphs are so long. But I feel like there is a good story in there somewhere.

I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads, but I feel like it's because the first half of the book was 2 stars and the last half was 4 stars!

I'm on a reading bender right now. 15 books finished so far this year (the same amount I read all of last year). In the past week I have read three books:
Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs. I gave this 3 stars on Goodreads. It was a very slow start but got better which is also how I found her other book, The Friday Night Knitting Club.
The Kitchen Daughter by Jael McHenry. I gave this 4 stars. It was really good, told from the perspective a girl with undiagnosed Asperger's.
Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and my Journey from Homeless to Harvard by Liz Murray. I gave this 3 stars. I really wanted to like it, but I felt that she spent too much time on her childhood (before she was homeless) and felt the part of how she got to Harvard was very rushed at the end (almost like she was going to write another 200 pages, but the editor told her the story was too long so she cut that part in half). Plus it was a little too graphic for my taste. I really didn't need to know in detail how her parents shot up cocaine.
I just started The Girl with No Name by Diney Costeloe about a young Jewish, German girl who was sent on the Kindertransport and loses her memory after her house in London is bombed. I picked this one up on the spur at the Amazon bookstore at the mall.

Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. This is the fourth book in the Red Rising series - picking up ten years after the initial trilogy. I didn't like it as much as the previous books. 3.5 stars. I am trying to decide whether or not to read this. I really liked the original trilogy, but I have seen a lot of negative/so-so reviews about this one.

I’ve also posted this on the Kindle First thread.
I just finished Trespassing by Brandi Reeds. My Kindle First pick for March. It was awesome. A great free book if you’re a Prime customer or, like myself a great bargain for $1.99 as a Kindle owner. This author sure knows how to build tension. Awesome thrill ride. Definitely 5/5 Stars for me.
Veronica’s grasp is slipping between fertility treatments, her daughters new imaginary friend who seems very devilish and now her husband fails to return home from a business trip. Family has a history of mental illness.
