I do a combination of pocket page and 12x12 layouts and I’m a chronological scrapper. I’m currently working on an album for 2012. Yes, I’m very behind. I haven’t finished scrapbooking the summer of that year yet but I’m album is already bursting at the seams. Granted that was a very busy year with weddings, vacations etc. but I’m starting to wonder if it’s unrealistic to fit an entire year into one album or if I need to be more ruthless with only choosing a few pictures from an event. I don’t print pics at home and often feel compelled to include each one. I’m wondering how others manage this.

I'm not a chronological scrapbooker, so I'm probably no help to you! But I imagine if I was, there is no way I would be able to fit a whole year into one scrapbook. With all the holidays, birthdays, vacations, events, and the "moments" layouts, I would probably need 2 per year. I have 3 kids and a large extended family so there is always tons of pictures being taken.
If I were you, I would just use as many albums as you need and label them accordingly. 1st half of 2012, 2nd half of 2012, etc. Good luck finding a solution that works for you!!
Edited to add: my own albums are divided up by child, each vacation gets it's own album and if it a smaller vacation a mini album or gets combined in a generic album labeled vacation. I have a Christmas album, Halloween, thanksgiving and another generic holidays album. And then I have albums labeled all about us and places we go. I kinda loosely based my albums on Stacey Julians library of memories.

Sure! If it’s a ten inch wide spine. 😂
In all honestly, I’ve got some years in one album, some in two, and one album has three years fit into it. It all varies. I think 2017 will end up being three albums - plus a Disney only album for our trip.

I can probably get 2-3 years easily in an album these days. The kids are older so less day to day stuff and I've gotten a lot more selective about what I scrapbook and how many photos I include. Mainly it was because at some point I realized I didn't want or need bookcases full of albums to tell our family story.
At the end of the day you gotta do what works for you.

When I first started scrapping, I could. Then there were more grandkids, I started scrapping more, and my pages got fatter and it started taking two binders for a year. Then the binders got thicker...
For the past few years, I have an album (a thick one) for each season: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. And most years have at least one other album for a special event like a grad or family reunion or Christmas or vacation, with maybe a representative couple of pages in the album for that season.
I designed my scraproom around having shelves for my albums, and now my shelves are full so the albums are spreading out into other rooms.
If you give a mouse a cookie...

No, would not even try. I stop when a album is full and put the dates on the label...month and year started and stopped. I make separate vacation albums, too and sometimes need 2 albums for them. Weddings would have their own album, too, if it was family.

I've never been able to get one year in one album. My son is older (26 years) but I still typically use three albums per year. I agree with the above poster, "...would not even try." Good luck!

I usually can these days, but there were a few years when the kids were little that I had to break into 2 albums.

It has changed throughout the years . When my kids were younger I took lots more photos of them than I do now. We would go apple and pumpkin picking, I would dress them to coordinate with the fall colors etc. There were beach photos and so on. Now DD is away at college and my son goes out with his friends, not much chance to take photos. I’m lucky if I get some at Xmas, a birthday dinner. So now I focus mostly on our family vacation. The past 3 years we have gone to Europe and I took a ton of pictures so the vacation is a whole album. The rest of the year I take very little pictures but even then if we go to an important event I try to limit the amount of photos I print out. This year I’m doing project life by month and I will have to skip February!

Thanks everyone. Now that I know it’s probably unrealistic to get a full year in one album I won’t sweat it. But I think I’ll still try to be more choosy about the photos. I have this weird guilt about discarding any pictures as it feels like I’m disrespecting the person in the photo. I’ll have to get over it I suppose and start printing off less to begin with.

One way to deal with this is to do a few month in review layouts. I did that and I thought at first that I was kind of taking a cheesy way out of scrapping all those pictures and memories but now I really like those layouts. I've never done PL but I feel that it gave the same effect. A snapshot of our life during those months. I was able to include event and moment pictures in the same layout.

I think a lot depends on the album you use. I use Close to My Heart albums that can be expanded. I often take thousands of photos per year, BUT I do not scrapbook every event or outing, and I also am picky about the pictures. I often have 4 page layouts of the events that I scrapbook.
Yes, sometimes I can get a full year into an album if I expand the album with extenders.
However, I would have no issues with using more than one album per year, if necessary.

Yes, exactly. It allows me to scrap pictures and memories that probably wouldn’t get scrapped if not for the review layouts.

I have this weird guilt about discarding any pictures as it feels like I’m disrespecting the person in the photo. I’ll have to get over it I suppose and start printing off less to begin with. Editing and being selective is good. And it definitely isn't disrespectful to discard a photo, although it does feel wasteful to me, so I don't discard many photos unless they're actually terrible or damaged. But you could also use the extra photos in other ways. Perhaps sending a card with extra photos of a person to them to enjoy. A lot of people never print pictures so they are delighted to have them in their hands. Or sending the pictures to someone else who would appreciate them (aunts, grandparents) if they're mostly pictures of your immediate family. The photo isn't wasted and you get to reach out and give something to someone you love. Giving them to the kids (assuming you have young kids) to start their own album. My Dad edited our family photo collection at one point and I still treasure the cast offs I got to keep for myself. Putting the extras in a basic photo album - the kind where you just slip a print into a pocket - or into a photo box. I have both - an album for pix of people I love, a box for extra vacation and event pictures. I figure it's a little extra insurance in case something happens to my albums. Maybe one room of the house is damaged in a fire (knock on wood that never happens) or photos are lost digitally. I keep them in different parts of the house. Maybe I lose some of the best photos but I have some others that are also good. I've found slip-in albums at thrift and discount shops and Michaels sometimes has them half off. I get the kind that have 2 pictures per page, 4 to a spread - they're small enough to fit with my regular books on the living room shelf. Or you can fit a LOT of photos in a photo box.

I like that idea, Joblackford, of putting extras into a regular album

The only time I've been able to fit one year of PL in an album was when I did the entire album using the PL app. Otherwise it's always 2 per year.

I get one year in one album. That is my only hard and fast rule. I’m all about editing out duplicate photos. I’ve only scrapped back thru 2010, but I keep current. Once I get to pre-digital years I expect to have multiple years in one album.

Rarely have I fit an entire year in one album. I used to start and stop by year, but now I just keep going, so an album might start in May and end in August. It just depends when the album is full. But I do scrap chronologically.
One year I had 3 albums for one year. Someday I will split those up into albums for each boy. I did family albums then.

Not for most years.
I scrap too many everyday moments.

I don’t scrap chronologically but I keep my albums that way. I do digital, pocket and traditional and throw memorabilia in pockets next to layouts. Some years one album, some year more. When an album is full I move on.

Yes, I have a lot of albums. But, I have instructed my DD when I am gone, they can be scanned, kept, or tossed. I don't want anyone holding onto them out of guilt. I had the joy of creating them. They shouldn't become a burden. Now, will I haunt them if they end up in a dumpster? Heck, yeah!

I don't scrap many regular events - if I do pocket pages it's usually theme based. I don't have kids so don't have that many pics to work with. I also have reasonably limited shelf space so my focus is usually on vacations and travel photos. But you have to do what works for you.

I have 2+ years in my first 9x12 pocket-page album. For my kids’ 12x12 albums, they are also 2-3 years each. No wonder my stash isnt getting used up. Lol, I must be doing it wrong!

If he doesn't want them, he has been instructed to pile them up, set them on fire, and have a weenie roast!

Yes. I do pocket/PL by month and can get a whole year in a 9x12 album with a bunch of inserts and extras. However December is just a 2 page spread in that album - the rest of the photos and stories of December is in a mini album.

I can fit one year of PL into a 12x12 album but I only make one 12x12 page per week with an occasional extra page for a special week that includes a vacation or special occasion. If I put two 12x12 pages per week into an album there is no way I could fit it all in one per year. That is one of the reasons I keep it to one page per week. I keep all of my photos at 3x4 or smaller to fit. them on the pages. There is no way I could fit both PL and traditional into one album as it seems like I can only fit about 20 layouts (12x12) into one album. That does vary depending on the amount of embellishment.

I have a few years that fit in one album - or even multiple years in one album...but those are from the the pre-digital era when I was beyond broke and couldn't afford much film In the later years of film and certainly since I went digital - each year requires 2, 3, 4 albums. I enjoy taking photos, we're an active family (in that we do stuff most weekends where I take pictures) and with 4 dslrs in the house (one/person), there's lots of photo taking going on. But to be honest, I remember one of the houses I lived in as a child, having a wall of photo albums...so I come by it naturally I love pulling them off the shelf to flip though and I'm glad my children enjoy flipping through the scrapbooks I have gotten more selective about printing and scrapping photos as time has gone on
