Hi we have a family reunion this summer in Nashville. We have a hotel all set up, but are looking for ideas of things to see and do in Nashville and possibly Knoxville before our reunion. Things not related to concerts or music? We already have some of that planned.

Nashville is called Music City, not Country Music City, so you can easily find something you like.

Nashville is called Music City, not Country Music City, so you can easily find something you like. This. We are not modern country music fans at all. We do appreciate classic rock n roll, blues, soul, modern folk and bluegrass, and found plenty of that to see and hear.

I see that you edited your post. I like to check out TripAdvisor when we visit new places and always find good information along with reader reviews.

Are you interested in shopping, restaurants, visiting landmarks, or the touristy stuff on Broadway? We have a zoo, a botanical garden, vineyards, Centennial Park, and so much more in Nashville. What do you like to do?

Nashville and Knoxville are not that close together. But there is always Gatlinberg with Dollywood, etc. Knoxville has a zoo... What are you looking for?

We are thinking about Dollywood. Is it mostly coasters? If there are some good shows, we might be interested. Also thinking about Creat Smoky Mtns National Park. I realize it’s huge, can we see enough in one day?

Which reminds me..... dh mentioned touring a distillery. We also love coffee, again local. No Starbucks. Shopping, but not your regular touristy stuff. Would love to bring back locally made things unique to the area. We do like outdoorsy stuff, but not hiking, so maybe shorter nature walks(I have back troubles) Last, I have a cousin in Memphis. We aren’t able to make it there. Is there somewhere along the highway in between the two cities that has a good selection of restaurants. I’m hoping to meet him halfway somewhere.... I can’t tell much by looking at maps.

Nashville is our preferred airport. I never get to stay long enough to do anything but I can tell you that we enjoy eating at the Pharmacy. The Pharmacy

Knoxville has a Mast General store downtown that you may like. Pete's restaurant, Culver's, and Calhoun's on the River are three of our favorites. The Zoo has made a big improvement in the last few years and the Old City has some neat places to explore.
Gatlinburg is a fun tourist trap. There will be shops with good local crafts right next to a t-shirt shop. You just have to explore to find what you want.
The Smokies are great. Sugarlands visitor center has some very tame walks around it and they can give you directions to a very easy nature trail close to the entrance of the park.
The park in a day recommendation is tough, depending on what you like. Driving to Newfound Gap is popular, as is Clingman's Dome, as there are overlooks there. Driving in Cades Cove is popular, but depending on when you go, that could take up a big chunk of your day. We enjoy Roaring Fork motor trail, as it is near town and less crowded.
Park Grill, the Pancake Pantry, and Calhouns in Gatlinburg are favorites. In Pigeon Forge/Sevierville, the Apple Barn and the Old Mill are very popular. We have not tried the Alamo steakhouse but have heard good things about it.
Distilleries are a thing now in that area. Your husband should have no problem finding one (or a thousand!) to tour. There are plenty of wineries too.
Dollywood does have a lot of rides but there are shows too. I'm not sure how many because they have literally just opened for the season.
Jackson is the most central large city between Memphis and Nashville. It is not close, as it is a couple of hours both ways.

I can’t tell much by looking at maps. Well, you are in for a treat because Nashville is home to some good restaurants. We had brunch at The Old School a couple weeks ago and it's a place I'd visit again (True farm to table) - the website is down or I'd link it for you..guess they're updating...a couple from France just asked me about it this week, so it's making waves amongst the foodies. The Pharmacy, which someone else recommended is fun as is Pinewood Social. If you want the chef's table experience then the Catbird Seat is for you. All of these are trendy, so you never know who may be eating next to you! I like hot chicken, so Hattie B's is my go to for that. It's not fancy by any means, but it's good. Arrington Vineyard is reported to be fantastic, but I haven't been. My girlfriend Jacci loves it though. You can take a picnic basket and make an afternoon of it. We have Beachaven winery in my town and it's my place. They have a rediculously popular Jazz on the lawn that I can hear from my front porch, so I don't fight the big crowds anymore. You can go early and get a cozy spot in between the vines for the evening and it is family friendly. The Blackberry wine is my jam. My town also has Old Glory Distilling Company, which is owned by a local fireman. MB Roland Bourbon Distillary is up the road in Kentucky. Not that you have to come up to my neck of the woods. Just letting you know. 🙂 Here are some Nashville wineries/breweries/Distillaries www.visitmusiccity.com/Visitors/food/breweriesI'm not sure about coffee since I brew mine at home. And Jackson is way closer to Memphis, but will save you an hour + from going all the way if you wanted to meet there. Not any other place that I can really think of, but then again I don't stop when I drive home (Memphis is my hometown). Hope you have a fun family reunion and adventure!

It's the 1st thing I thought when I saw your thread, but didn't post because you just mentioned Knoxville. ...and it's a little past there. If you enter at the Sugarland visitor center, the Rangers will help you decide what you want to do there for the day. Cades cove is a very popular drive near the entrance and there are some very short "nature walks" near the visitors center, too.
