I wish more of these made the news and the internet. I had to listen to a call the other day. Not sure how I got dialed but I did and it was someone who was in the middle of a confrontation with the police. The person was doing everything they could to escalate the situation and police officers on scene were so calm and collected and eventually talked the person down and was able to get them the help they needed. It was unbelievable to listen to the interaction. They do not get nearly enough credit for the jobs they do.

I wanted to give that mother a big hug. She looked exhausted. The police officer would have received the next one.

It’s difficult to see the entire situation but my heart is overjoyed that this is being promoted because it should be worldwide knowledge not to judge or cause more havoc in these situations. I wish it was ultizied more.
It’s tough to do basic life skills in public with those on the spectrum that are triggered by the environment. It’s challenging for me to even drive in traffic and not get unnnerved after some point. Grocery shopping is loud, chaotic, and requires many skills used at once which makes it anxiety ridden for a care giver of a child in the spectrum. Not only are you trying to complete the task of shopping, you are also monitoring and assuring the child is okay.
I was trained to alway expose my daughter to as much as I could without overstimulating her and using calming methods and time always as needed. I still get emotional when I see mom’s with children that have disabilities struggling to get through the grocery store without a meltdown or it’s already happened and now they are planning an escape. Compassion and patience go a long way.

As the mom of a son with autism, I’m so happy to see this story get publicity. I am very glad that my son never had a meltdown while out, but I sure could sympathize with the mom as my son’s meltdowns can go for hours at home.

SaveSaveExactly, exactly, exactly. I hear stories daily like this and just wish more of this would be shown because this is part of what officers do everyday. My daughter is an officer, and it's incredible the patience they have and how much they want to help! Thank you for sharing this awesome video! It brought tears to my eyes!

My son had to take 4 or 5 classes on psychology. For a 2 year law enforcement degree. He heard that 4 year degrees are going to be required soon and most will be psychology classes.

My son had to take 4 or 5 classes on psychology. For a 2 year law enforcement degree. He heard that 4 year degrees are going to be required soon and most will be psychology classes. To be a police officer? I know a lot of officers do not get degrees in crimnal justice. It's not required. My daughter has Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry, Forensic Science, and a minor in Criminal Justice. She wasn't going to get that minor but had time to take the classes so did. It wasn't required at any department where she applied. At her department now there are officers with degrees in LOTS of different things (even pastors). They pay more if you have a 4 year degree but you don't have to have a degree at all. She is in a department that is one of only a handful of accredited departments in the entire state. The Academy and training at the department is what prepares them the most. A lot of officers in her department have Master's Degrees. It's always interesting to find out what degrees they have but Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement degrees don't have to be the only degree field. I would think that varies greatly from department to department. Hope your son enjoys wherever he goes!

PatterThe requirement to have a 4 year degree is only in the discussion stage, for Washington state. Son is no longer interested in police work.

That poor mother. She was so stressed. I hope I've never added to someone's stress in that situation by giving them the look.
I love how the officer handled things. I would have tried to use a very soft, soothing voice. The officer spoke to the boy in a calm, normal voice. It was amazing how quickly he took control of the situation in a nonthreatening way and calmed the boy down.

That's what I thought that it was a department thing (or state in your instance). It really is sad the amount of mental health issues they deal with. I forget the percentage where my daughter is but it's really high as was the other department that was interested in hiring her. We were shocked. So, sad. Our mental healthcare options truly are sad. Hope your son finds what he loves to do!

De-escalation should be at the forefront of any policeman's mind . The skill has been sadly absent in some of the well -publicised cases where things have gone terribly wrong very quickly .
