People, for the love of all that is holy, please do not give out a fake phone number or email address to a retail establishment (either bricks & mortar or online). I can't tell you how much spam email I get because someone is too afraid to just say 'no' or thinks it will be easier to just make one up, and they "make up" MY email address. It might be easier for them, but it is a huge pain in the ass for me because now I have to unsubscribe to all the crap that they don't want. Likewise with the phone number. I NEVER give out my actual phone number, but someone else has at some point thoughtfully provided it for me and now I get a shit ton of spammy calls on my cell phone.
So please, sign up for an email account that you don't intend to use ever for anything except spammy retail email, and give that out. Get a google voice account and use that instead of your phone number. I totally get not wanting to give out your personal information, but please stop making it up, because it probably belongs to someone else.
Thank you. Vent over.

This one was flashing in my face and it was making me uncomfortable. I am not sure the US Michaels and Canadian Michaels got the same email. It was bright red and yellow flashing. If it hurts my eyes it is gone. Yeah, the one I got this morning has a big yellow box with black bold words flashing inside of it. I am in the U.S.

I HATED that when I worked at Target for a short period of time.. Do YOU have a Red Card??... Oye.. whenever I was alone I never asked... I HATED that so much.. then the managers come up with some stupid gimmick to get us to ask.. Like John the store manager will dress up like a chicken if we get 20 Red Cards. GO AHEAD John dress like a damn chicken, I'm still not pushing it.. I hate hate it. I feel so bad for the employees because I know many have to ask that (Target). But at our Target, most are great about it. But one young man pressures you. My husband is super worried about giving social security numbers, which is required for the red card. If you politely say "no", he continues to pressure you. None of the other cashiers do that, they are all so polite. I no longer get in his line, even if it's short.

When asked for my telephone number I always say “I don’t have a phone.’ That usually stops things dead as thry are aghast at someone without a phone.
Ps...I do actually do have a phone

Wish that would work for me, but I can't say that number without singing it.

I am in the U.S. Mine was flashing red and yellow and I get the same discount on the app that I do in the email. I can check in there every Thursday night if I want to hear about the sale that week. If I can't look at the email without difficulty I am not reading it.

So I go into Ulta today for the first time in my life. Buy a few generic items like face wash and mascara. When I go to check out the lady is nice enough. When she asks me for my phone number I tell her that I'm not interested in giving it. That I rarely come in, don't want the discounts, etc. etc. etc. Then her mood changes. No more friendly check out lady. She was just blah. No thank you for shopping there. I can't stand that attitude. I've noticed it before in a couple of stores. Like my Goodwill asks us if we want to round up our purchase. NO, I just gave you money. I don't want to give you any more. Then the attitude changes. It's like the sale isn't good enough any more. We need to give them MORE than just our money. OK, vent over. How many reasons did you give her when she asked for your number? That might have rubbed her the wrong way being that she only asked for your number once. Regardless, she should not have been rude.

Give a fake number. I use my old house phone number. Consider that you may be messing things up for whoever got the number reassigned to them. One of the clothing stores here kept linking my phone number to someone with a different name. I changed it twice (I've had my phone number for almost a decade now so I figured anyone who had it before would have changed theirs by now, too); it kept getting changed back, even though I escalated to corporate multiple times, and I have to wonder if it's because SHE kept changing it back. I gave up and used my cell number and for now, it's stayed with my name. Online it is still associated with me, my husband and one of our businesses. Doesn't appear to have been reassigned.

I never give my phone number; nor do my girls. I worked in federal prison, so we give out the prison number. If the establishment decides to call my given number, they get the recording "You've reached the federal prison in *city-state*. I'm betting they hang up fairly quickly.

My Marshalls is always collecting money for some charity. They constantly announce that they are X dollars away from their daily goal, blah, blah, blah. It gets old. Then at check out they ask you to donate. I just say "I gave yesterday" and that seems to appease them.

I get phone calls multiple times a week for people trying to get our merchant service business. It drives me crazy, but I am ALWAYS polite - someone is just doing their job and I know that. Last week the girl was giving me the spiel and I stopped her politely and told her we were very happy with our current servicer and weren't looking to change...this poor girl started crying! I felt horrible! I mean I felt bad all day long and it still bugs me. I wasn't mean or rude at all, but I felt like she wasn't getting as many appointments as she was supposed to and her job must have been on the line. OMG, I felt so bad.
But I have never had anything like that happen in a brick and mortar store.

I once had a teenage boy at Walgreen's tell me I HAD to give my number. The poor kid didn't know what to do when I politely declined. When I'm not in the mood to stand my ground, I just make one up. If the checker is young enough, they don't bat an eye when my number is 867-5309. funny! but i pity the poor soul who actually has that number!

I once had a teenage boy at Walgreen's tell me I HAD to give my number. The poor kid didn't know what to do when I politely declined. When I worked retail there was a time during the transaction that the register prompted you to get a number, and you could not get past that screen without entering a number. So we'd enter 555 numbers or our own number or the store number when people declined, but I can see someone new having a moment of momentary panic wondering what they should do now. Plus, that was pushing 20 years ago now. The darn registers probably know enough to refuse fake numbers now.

yah, i have been asked in a way that seems kinda awkward to decline... like "oh... and your email address??" and they look at you expectantly.
i say "no thanks!" rather brightly and then when they explain why it will benefit me i reply "good to know, but no thank you" and smile.
i have noticed by times that the salesperson does seem to be a bit put out that someone would actually decline to give them that info. but realize it is likely tied to their commission or bonus or something so don't take it personally.

I just say "I gave yesterday" and that seems to appease them. this annoys me too. so you, big corporation, get the tax break? whenever they ask me this i reply "oh, that is a great cause... i donate on my credit card every month" with a big smile. if they said "we match whatever our customers donate", i would be way more agreeable to the idea.
