About the Russian hackers targeting our energy grids. They copied information that could be used to gain access to computer systems that control power plants. "It's the kind of access that experts say would have given Moscow the ability to turn off the power if it wanted to."
Are you prepared if that happens? If we have no power how would you Survive?
I'm not a prepper really. But I do like to be prepared. We live about 13 miles from the nearest town. We do have a water well, but it has an electric pump, I think we could rig up something that would work.
We do need to stock more food.
How about y'all.

No, what's the point of being scared? It won't help anything. We have plenty of smart people in this country that would eventually get things up and running again, even if the power did go out.
It's like the 80s Cold War scares alli over again.

I'm surrounded by a lot of Mormons. I'll mooch off my family. In all seriousness, it's a good idea to have food storage. I'm just not into a 30 year supply and grinding my own wheat.

No, I am not scared about any of the political stuff going on. It does seem very similar to the scare stuff in the Cold War and we did fine then. I have other more pressing things to be worried about.

My Mom and Dad always bought groceries a month at a time, except for perishables. (we were in the Army) They always have a stocked pantry and two freezers. This is the way I grew up. But if there is not electricity there goes the freezer. We have been without electricity for two weeks one time.

I'm not scared to cross the street and I'm much more likely to be hit by a car doing that activity than to be affected by Russian hacking. I take precautions like anyone when I cross the street. I assume people do whatever they feel is necessary to protect themselves and their family, from whatever it is they fear. But personally I'm not going to start stockpiling canned goods (except for hurricane season).

Living in upstate NY, we are always somewhat prepared. During an ice/snow storm that can last a week or ten days, we already have two generators. One runs essential parts of the house and the other runs the well. I always have plenty of food in the house that could last a couple weeks or more. So, I’m not really worried, but won’t be surprised if it happened.

I'm not talking about the end of the world. But what if it was for a month or two? You want to survive that, right? And you have a child. I was just wondering if other people were prepared. I don't think it's a crazy idea that it very well could happen.

Nope. We are extremely close to a power plant where we live. If they attack it, we’ll probably all die quickly (assuming they cause it to melt down).
I refuse to turn into a prepper over the possibility that Russia will hack us and turn the grids off. I don’t think they will do that. I think they did it to prove that they can. Like, a warning to this administration of what could come if we enforce sanctions, etc.
I refuse to get worked up about this. I don’t have the energy to get worked up over foreign interferences when it is COMPLETELY out of my control. I am out of fucks to give.

Commenting on what I bolded: I think the "if they wanted to" is critical here. Putin is more interested in destabilizing with subtle, under the radar manipulation. With many still claiming there was no meddling in the western elections, this technique is way more powerful than cutting off our power grid. Cutting off the power grid would wake up everyone in denial to what is happening, resulting in the targeted countries retaliating. Unless Putin wants to declare war, I don't think it will happen. I can survive without power. Most of us can, unless requiring ventilators and other equipment to survive. We might not want to, but we would survive.

I think the key here is if the Russian hackers can cause a nuclear meltdown.
I think if it’s just regular power plants they shutdown we can stumble along. But if they can cause nuclear meltdowns in the atomic power plants then that is a whole new ball game. And that, obviously, would be very dangerous for those living in the immediate area and wind path.

I refuse to give Russia, or any country for that matter, that much control over my life.
Of course we would survive without electricity. I use CPAP, so that concerns me, but otherwise I have no fear of a loss of electricity. I spent much of my youth in Maine. No electric, no running water, no indoor plumbing. We survived.
Puerto Rico has survived.

I think it's getting more likely every day. Sure I think they can. I also think DT can roll over on his phone in the middle of the night and tweet out the nuclear codes and kills us all. I just don't have the head space to worry about either one, nor will I give either one power over me. I don't begrudge anyone a little preparation if that is what they are into, but [call me shallow] my family is happy and healthy and we're going to keep celebrating the life we have today by spending time together and showing how much we love each other. IMO, I would rather spend my time doing that than prepping. But admittedly, I am not a worrier.

Why stress about something that may never happen?
I will say that we don't have much of a stockpile. It's a small house. There simply isn't room. Well, there's room in the basement but I'll forget about it. We're on city power and water. However my parents have a generator and a well. Worse case, we'll stay there for a while.
And honestly, I don't think my corner of Michigan is going to be targeted.

The energy grid is something I've been concerned about for quite some time, Russian or not. (To be clear, I'm not "worried" or losing sleep. It's just something that has been a nagging thought)
And I'm not fully convinced that some of the widespread outages we've had in the past (including some of the complete airline grid failures) weren't some sort of tests.
I'm not generally a conspiracy theorist but I believe someone has been poking at the fence to find a weakness for a long time.

Some have said they are unable to do anything about it. VOTE! Well yes, of course we will do our part and vote. However, there is nothing I can do myself from my corner of Michigan to stop Russia from attacking our local nuclear power plant. Like how if the airplane I’m in is going down, there is nothing I can do to fix that situation.

My husband works in an “energy field” who is working with homeland security to update/upgrade energy grids.
I feel okay with the current news, knowing what I know that they are being done.

It's the velociraptors Personally, if the power goes out for a while for any reason, we are screwed. I think I have 1 canned soup, 1 jar of something, and maybe a pouch of tuna in our pantry. Oh, and some brown rice. Not even any bread or snacks. Everything we eat is perishable. When there is ice or possibility of flooding I always think we should stock up just in case, but we never do.
