It’s so rude to block the road while people wait to try to back in. If no one else is around and you can do it quickly in the first try, fine, I don’t care. But to block the road? Selfish assholes. Genuine question to the American peas - are you not taught reverse parking when you learn to drive? Is it part of your test? While we certainly have our share of dodgy drivers I can’t recall ever encountered someone who’s taken more than 2 or 3 manoeuvres and about 15 seconds to reverse into a parking place. In Michigan, backing into a parking space is one thing our kids have to do to pass the driver's test.

I always avoid parking next to someone who backs into their parking spot. Because I have had the experience twice of having my car scratched by jackwagons who attempt to push their grocery cart to the back of their vehicle to load their trunk.
I drive a minivan. I am very adept at parking my van. It also has a back up camera so before I back out of a space, I can look and see if there are any small children behind me.

i hate people that back in to parking spots. Most take multiple tries to get it right while you just sit and wait. What is the purpose? I do not understand. In certain situations (which luckily are only a few for me) backing out of certain spots at certain times is very difficult, so I back in instead. The #1 example I can think of is this school my son goes to once a week for a special class and the parking lot is just laid out terribly! And when you're trying to leave, there are people backing and pulling out of spots in all directions and there are little kids everywhere, and I either get there early, back into a pot, and then pull out, or if I get there late (in which case the layout makes it impossible to back into a spot) I just pull into a spot and sit there until most people have cleared out. But it's a weekend class and out family time starts when the class is over, so I prefer not to wait around. Most of the time, I go for pull-through parking spots. That gives me the option of never having to back in or out of a spot. It takes time for people to back out of spots, too, though, and it can take multiple attempts based on the location (Our local grocery store is terrible for this. The layout makes it so hard for people to back out of spots and so there are always other card waiting around for the backer-outers.) so I don't really understand feeling hatred for people backing into spots. I find that I am happier if I try to work a bit more time and/or patience into my travels, especially lately. I stay less frustrated that way. And it tends to make people happily surprised to run into someone willing to wait just a bit without unhappiness and/or complaints.

While we certainly have our share of dodgy drivers I can’t recall ever encountered someone who’s taken more than 2 or 3 manoeuvres and about 15 seconds to reverse into a parking place. I was taught it and it was part of my test, along with parallel parking. Then, when I first got a car, I lived at home and we had a long downhill driveway that was one car wide. It went right between the house next door and our house and to large parking pad. We had 4 cars, a boat trailer, and a motorcycle on that pad. There was no room for error or you were going to hit something. I backed up or down that driveway enough to teach me to back in and out of most any spot. BUT, my issue when backing in and out of places in public...is the public! People don't watch where they're walking, or cars won't let you out, or they've dumped carts, litter, broken glass, etc. in the spot. ugh. That's why I avoid it if I can.

What an enlightening thread! I can honestly say it takes me much longer to back out (because of pedestrians and people just speeding to grab a spot they've seen) than it does to back into a spot. Unless you can pull right through a spot to the next row, someone is always waiting for someone to back up one way or another. This is not a subject to get me all twisty. Now people who can't actually park between the lines is another thing...

There is no such thing as an "American driver's license"...every state has its own rules so some might require reverse parking and others might not. In Virginia you are not required to park by backing up. In fact you're not required to park at all, at least not parallel parking. I'm not even sure that front-in parking was required exactly...when my kids took their road test they had to pull into a parking spot at the DMV at the end of their test. I guess that was probably the last bit of the exam now that I think about it, but they were not told to do it backwards.

No, it was not taught in driver’s ed and was not on the test. It’s annoying to me because it takes so much longer than just pulling in. If I had ever encountered anyone who could do it quickly I probably wouldn’t be as annoyed.

I’m a really bad parker. Kids and DH tell me this all the time. So I park far away and pull through to get the car straight. But about a month ago we were out (DH had parked). We commented that it wasn’t a great parking job but it really wasn’t that bad. We came back to this “business card” on our windshield!! After my dad died I found a little card in his wallet that said, “Thanks for parking so damn close. Next time leave a can opener so I can get into my car!”

As everyone said, it's safer to get out. Are we all in that much of a hurry that we can't wait 60 seconds, if that, for someone to back into a parking spot?

I noticed this today as I watched a guy make two attempts to back in. I have NEVER taken that long to back out of a space. There was a row of cars behind me in the Target parking lot by the time he got in his space. I have a new vehicle, so my camera makes backing out safer. I vote for backing in only if you can make it on the first shot. Even then, it still takes twice the time of just pulling in.

And regarding the safety of pulling out vs backing up, that is assuming that the person departing the spot isn't a total moron too. At least if you are going to back out and I am coming down the aisle, I can see your reverse lights and be aware. Again, anyone care to guess what happens in the lot at school? People don't slow down at my work parking garage when they see your reverse lights. They speed up. I turn on my headlights and on high beam if it's dark so they can see me. 😏

My DH, God bless him, purchased his first full-sized truck two years ago and still can't park the thing when pulling in; he crowds the left side and leaves a ton of room on the right. So he backs into parking spaces and relies on the backup camera for proper alignment. I've driven a Suburban for over ten years and have no problem pulling in or backing in (and I have no camera).

My state tests parallel parking. I'm genuinely surprised to learn that some states don't include a reverse maneuver in their test. Not even a three-point turn? I wonder if one could get through life without ever reversing? I swear my mother got through her (admittedly very local) driving life without ever turning left. She just kept turning right until she arrived at her goal... When I took my test they did test a 3 point turn. My son said he didn't have to though.

I find it hilarious people are bitching about people backing into a car space, but I'm willing to bet think nothing of stopping in the middle of an aisle in a store, talking on their phone in public, or peeing all over a public toilet seat without cleaning up after themselves. Legit. Not sure how these things things correlate in your mind...you’d lose the bet on me. Most of the time I am not a fan of backing in parking but I’ve done none of the things you’ve mentioned. Maybe the point you were trying to make is that everyone has their “things” they bitch about? The people bitching about something as trivial as waiting a second for someone to park a car, but are mindless about their own annoying/rude habits.

Sorry you seem to have the other kind, it doesn’t sound like any fun.

No, it was not taught in driver’s ed and was not on the test. So it's not surprising that so many people aren't good or confident at doing it I suppose!

personally, i find this to be a man thing. almost every man i know does it because "it's easier to get out". however, as i like to point out "but harder to get in, so what is the difference?". Not at all harder. I back in quite frequently. If you can't back in, practice. It's quite simple really and doesn't take much more time to back in than pull in.

As everyone said, it's safer to get out. Are we all in that much of a hurry that we can't wait 60 seconds, if that, for someone to back into a parking spot? I'm sorry - but this is my tipping point! Yes ... I am busier than waiting a minute for someone to back into a parking spot -- especially when I can pull in and park in about 5 seconds. That one minute multiplied by everyone who needs to park at the multi-level parking lot with spaces that are already too small and a one-way drive lane -- yes -- 60 seconds is too long to be required to wait. If one is so needful of backing in to the space -- go where there are more spaces and less other traffic -- then one can take all the time they need to jockey their vehicle back and forth, back and forth, with the minute adjustments in each to and fro. Just today I was intending to leave a parking spot - I was, of course, head in -- and had to wait for the monster truck to backward wiggle into the spot next to me. So... not only was the monster truck holding up the drive lane, I was being detained from leaving -- because that truck that can see over EVERYONE would be "safer" pulling straight out.

I back in probably 99% of the time. I work at a major university and parking is at a premium and the spaces you find are pretty tight. Not enough spaces and so much pedestrian traffic (scooters, long boards, bikes, etc.) that I want to see what is around me very easily. I always back in park at work so it is easier and safer for me to see when I am leaving. I also scoot out of the parking lot quicker than those around me who did not back in. I always park this way at work and at home in my driveway and do so the majority of the time I go anywhere else.
I don't typically have any issues parking quickly and easily with the back in style -- if you do it enough, you are equally proficient at either style of parking.
My daughter is 21 and used to not understand why my DH and I parked this way -- now I notice she has started doing it too -- she decided it was safer for her so she now does it too.

I think many of the car parks in the US have more room than in the UK. Our spaces are so small and the car parks are generally very tight that it is virtually impossible, in a busy car park, to drive straight in to a parking space anyway. It takes several manoeuvres to get the car straight. The space between the rows is not usually wide enough to swing round to park in one go. Reversing into a narrow space is generally more efficient.

Backing in a space is pretty much the norm here. I don't mind waiting for someone to finish parking safely. No different to waiting for someone to parallel park. Selfish or funding annoying is something that doesn't even enter my head. Life is too short to get annoyed waiting an extra minute when driving.
