I've thought about the guillotine from tonic, but I often cut a square out of the center of my 12x12 and I don't think I could do that w/a guillotine because it cuts from an edge in. So that's stopped me from getting one. This is why I could never use a guillotine trimmer. I also don't like the idea of that blade being in the air and coming down but that's less of a concern. I just have never been the type of scrapper that could get much if any use from that type of trimmer. I frequently cut out the center of paper and need to have a trimmer that the blade can raise up and stop and start where I want it to. I paid a lot for a Dahle trimmer that is very precise but the arm doesn't lift so I never use it.

Thanks to suggestions from the peas, I'm thinking about the Tonic now and just keeping my cutterpede for crops and gutting. Might be a good way to go - if I can find a good buy on the Tonic.

I still love my Dahle trimmers. I had, and still have, the Dahle CutCat. I bought it USED from another photographer and used it for 30 years with the same blade. Only problem was that the plastic back wall that you lined up started wearing down AND the ruler markings just wore off too. I bought the one below at the store below a few years ago. The only thing I didn't like about the new one was the 1 inch thing beside the blade that kept the paper slivers. Took it off! I guess I didn't tighten it back up enough because later it wasn't cutting true square, just had to loosen it, line it up and tighten again. B&H Dahle 507Some day I'd LOVE to get the Dahle 550 since the 507 only lets you measure 6 inches off when cutting but it takes a lot more room and the 507 is so portable. Dahle 550

I have the Fisker’s with the wire. At one point the wire wore out but the company sent me a replacement wire so the trimmer is still going strong. I also have the Tonic 12” guillotine but it’s kind of big so I only use it for chipboard. Now I’m thinking of getting the Tim Holtz 8” Tonic trimmer after reading here. I like the idea of not having to replace blades.

I am a big proponent of piling stuff around my workspace, lol-- so I have the Tonic guillotine cutter, a tile for heat embossing, and my score board all sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall right next to my desk. I grab them when I need them, then put them back on the floor!! (that gives you an idea about how 'neatly' my room is organized, lol.)

I have both the MM and Tonic G'tines. I love them both. I tend to use my Tonic more, though. Now.

I use the Tonic Guillotine that can fold out to 12inch paper. I love it so much. I also have a MM, and three Fiskar portable trimmers that I never use anymore.

Would you please tell me how you use your tile for heat embossing? I am intrigued. Thanks!🙂 it's a leftover glazed floor tile from our kitchen; I think it's probably 14-16 inches square, maybe. I use it as my heat-proof surface when I'm heating the embossing powder or using my fuse tool.

I have ordered: Westcott 12" TrimAir Titanium Wood Guillotine Paper Trimmer with Anti-Microbial Protection (it also comes in 15" and 18") I used one several weeks for about a day. It is really nice. I think it will be good as a permanent in my studio to replace the MM. I still have not found a good portable one that I love that is accurate. I just fold my MM and take with me.

with Anti-Microbial Protection haha!! why would a trimmer need anti-microbial protection?!? to guard against moldy paper, or something?? I mean, acid-free and lignin-free I can understand, but can there be fungal issues with long-term scrapbook paper storage?? lol!! (maybe I better start scrapping more, so my paper doesn't turn green and fuzzy, like things I leave in the refrigerator too long!)

Years ago I had the Making Memories desktop one, with the rotary self-sharpening blade. It started cutting crooked though, and never cut right again, even after getting a new arm from the company. I used Cutterpede cutters for a little while but the blade, tracks, etc were expensive to keep replacing(I was on a really tight budget at the time). I have a Fiskars 12 Inch SureCut Deluxe that is portable, not that I need that really since I don't go to crops or anything. Anyway... I am looking for something comparable to the old Making Memories trimmer. It was so nice and I never had to replace the blades or anything on it since it was self-sharpening. What do the peas suggest?? Same here! I’ve been dreading replacing my MM...but I’m frustrated with it not cutting right that I’ve uncovered my super old Fiskars trimmer that I loathe! Thank you for asking this question, going to read through the replies!

I loved my MM trimmer but it died years ago. It started making an annoying squeaking noise when I moved the blade. It was around the time MM was going out of business and they weren’t making the trimmers any more. I did contact them and they told me how to take it apart and fix it but I doubted it would stilll work properly so I ended up trashing it.

I received this Trim-Air this past weekend and it is fabulous. I got the 12 inch. Kind of wish that I got the 15 inch, now. But either way, it is pretty nifty.

I still have mine. I take it to crops.

okay, update. I like the Tonic! I have gotten used to the quirks, and how it differs from my Fiskars, but it's really growing on me. Thanks all.
