Someone posted a while ago about a tool to break open car windows. I believe their husband was a firefighter. Anyway, I need to buy one. Does anyone remember that thread or have a link? Thanks!

The head rest in your car is also designed to break your window. You can pull it out and use the metal part.

We bought one from the auto store for all the cars. It not only breaks windows but cuts the seatbelt.

I got one on Amazon...it breaks the windows, has a seat belt cutter, and helps get out of the car in general, not in emergencies (for people with mobility issues) Emson Car Cane Portable Handle

I had no idea; however, it takes me forever to try and get mine up or down so not sure that would be beneficial for me in an emergency. LOL! I also need to get one for my daughter as she is a police officer. I thought it would be good for her to have.

Patter, you’re on my same wavelength! Just a few days ago I was wanting a few of those tools, but after checking Amazon, some people said certain ones didn’t actually work (they tried them on old junk cars). That got me nervous, because the average person doesn’t have a way to try one out to be sure it works. Sprout, thanks for the firefighter-approved recommendation, that’s so helpful!

Read more about these 'hammers' .. they really don't work. I remember when they were the big thing to get and they are supposed to easily break out a car window - but they don't. They don't easily cut a seat belt either... Plus, how would you even find it if you were in a wreck and needed it? If you leave it laying around loose, I would guess the chances are that you will get wacked with it flying around, or you would never be able to find it. www.caranddriver.com/columns/caution-no-placebo-effect-beyond-this-point

My Dad is a retired firefighter. He doesn't like some of the tools sold for the purpose of breaking the window because he's seen situations where they didn't. So everyone has a hammer in their car. It's not pretty but does the job.

I'm curious why you think you need to buy one? I'm legit asking because I care. I'm not fooling. What is your desire to buy one?
I can't find jack sh!t in my car. I'm just admiring your goal of finding this thing when needed. Go You!

The one I have attaches to my keyring. In the case where I would need to use it, I simply pull it off its holder and it's good to go. It has the seat belt cutter and window cracker thing all in one unit.

It's not pretty but does the job. If you (general you) have a hammer for this purpose, make sure it's somewhere that it won't become airborne in the event of an accident. Also, make sure it stays within reach when your seat belt is locked in place after an accident. For example, I'm pretty short, so if it was in my glove box I'd never reach it.

I TRULY ask because my mind just can not grasp ever being in the situation of being underwater and thinking clearly enough " oh hey, my key ring!" I think it's something I'd have to train for as awful as that sounds. The sheer pressure of the water and the force of hitting ... I just can not fathom. And then ...knowing I can not hold my breath long AT ALL. Ugg maybe I should work on that today. LOL

We all keep them in the driver's side door pocket. At least there is a chance, if you need it.

(in NY having something like this could lead to a misdemeanor charge: possession of burglar's tools)

The head rest in your car is also designed to break your window. You can pull it out and use the metal part. Let me SNOPE that for you. I have THIS TOOL and keep it in the center console so it's contained and not flying around the car. I have a rather irrational fear of bridges over water and this is my "pill". Hope it works if I ever need it! SaveSave

I'm nervous to wade in here, but I feel I should. I have had one of these tools with belt cutter in my car since I was a teen driver (40 years + /-) and never needed it. My husband teased me as I added them to family cars.
Last year my teen driver was hit and flipped by an adult red-light runner. My son was dazed, obviously, and completely tangled in seat belts. He was able to reach in his console and grab the tool, passing it through a broken window to a good Samaritan who broke out more window and cut him out of the seatbelts before Fire / Police / EMTs arrived. There were lots of conversations in the Trauma Center, by the professionals, about how good it was he had the tool. It saved them time before getting him to the hospital.
Maybe all tools aren't equal, maybe you can't imagine being clear thinking, or maybe you'll be lucky and go 40 years without a need. But that doesn't mean there haven't been times when they've been useful. They handed it back to us in the hospital and once he was able to drive it was the first thing he put in his "new" car.

I used heavy duty Velcro to attach mine in the door pocket so it won’t fly around. Maybe I won’t have the wherewithal to use it in an emergency, but maybe I will so I’d rather have it than not.

DDs car was broken into and robbed a couple of months ago. When the glass repair was vacuuming out the last bits of glass, they found a window-breaker-seatbelt-cutter tool under her back seat. The robber left it behind. She keeps it on her keyring now.
So I don't know about seatbelts, but I can attest that it does a fine job of quickly and quietly breaking out car windows.
