I also lived through VietNam & Nixon. In fact it was my classmates that went to fight in VietNam. But as bad as that was I think this could be worse. Back then there was primarily one issue. Today there are many issues that divide us. I think it’s because the word “compromise” was dropped from way too many people’s vocabulary. But I don’t think we are at the point the country should split in half. Yes it was replaced with entitled

I'd take him a lot more seriously if he didn't seem to think this bad marriage was entirely the fault of liberals. I didn't even get to the reading part of the article (or this thread sorry if I repeat) when the map and it's designated naming of the 'countries' jumped out me and said no, this isn't gonna be one sided at all. View AttachmentThat’s just it though they guy in the article wants a smaller federal government, so why would he want a ‘federalist’ Union? Federalism by definition is built on a strong federal government? With the power centralized in a federal government. Confederal government is where the joined entities reserve the power to the local entities ( states ) and grant only specified powers to the confederation, and can take those powers back. So why does he want so bad to be a federalist Union if he wants less federal government. It’s not a mistake that the south was called a confederacy during the civil war. They were.

Divorce how? There is no liberal vs conservative Mason Dixon line. How stupid. I'll be liberal no matter where I live. I thought the East Coast might be more progressive than the Midwest, but I sure was wrong about that regarding the people I've met and the areas I've lived in.

I disagree as well-- on philosophical grounds as well as the entirely practical issue of "how in the hell would we do that?!?" it's not a geographical divide that's easily decided-- would entire states need to decide whether they were Red or Blue? Arbitrarily, lets's say AZ went red; CA blue; CO blue; UT red; WA and OR blue, MN blue, SD and ND red, etc. etc. It just wouldn't work.If anyone watches Family Guy, there was an episode where Peter tried to secede from the US and made his house and property "Petoria" and it didn't end well. That's what this guy's divorce plan sounds like, to me. ETA: just saw the map-- as someone who would be stuck on the wrong side of that line (in my opinion), I think all states would have to vote on this for themselves. if it came to that- which it won't. I think a lot of the divide, also (not all of it, but hear me out) is between population centers and places that are less densely populated. Eg, here in Washington, we'd be a red state, but/for the I-5 corridor that has most of the major cities. How on earth would that divide?

I guess they shouldn't scrap the wall plan just yet? Will the wall just promptly stop at the CA border then?
And where will the I-am-leaving-California-as-the-Democrats-have-killed-the-state-and-government unschooling anti-vaxxers go?
Who gets to keep the flag? Will they divide up the stars? What about Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico? Can Louisiana vote to become French?
I have so many questions. I'm not even American.

Texas has been talking about seceding for decades. I’m not worried that it will ever actually happen. California too. I'm sorry, but ... what are you talking about? I've lived in California all my life. I'm educated. I follow news and politics. Occasionally I hear rumblings about CA splitting into two states. But I've never heard a single word about secession.

But I've never heard a single word about secession. It was called “Calixt”. Or something like that. Right after the election there was a movement to put on some ballot down the road an information only type vote. Should California leave the United States type of thing. It would have been the first of many steps for CA to cut loose from the US. I think it got as far as some petitions were “out there” about getting this information vote on the ballot. But it ended up the guy spearheading it lives in Russia. I think he was from CA, but still. So it kind of died. But apparently there is someone else who wants to try and do it. This is different from that guy who wants to split the state into I think 7 different states.

Reminds me of this bullshit that went through the interwebs a decade ago:
"Please note that Texas is the only state with a legal right to secede from the Union . (Reference the Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848.)
We Texans love y'all, but we'll probably have to take action since B. Hussein Obama won the election. We'll miss you too.
Here is what can happen:
#1: Barack Hussein Obama becomes President of the United States , Texas immediately secedes from the Union .
#2: George W. Bush will become the President of the Republic of Texas .
So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?
1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas. We will control the space industry.
2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States .
3. Defense Industry--we have over 65% of it. The term "Don't mess with Texas," will take on a whole new meaning.
4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states? Sorry about that.
5. Natural Gas - again we have all we need and it's too bad about those Northern States. John Kerry will have to figure out a way to keep them warm....
6. Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications--small companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Miconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.
7. Medical Care - We have the largest research centers for cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world, as well as other large health centers. Dallas has some of the best hospitals in the United States .
8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: University of Texas , Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston , Baylor, UNT ( University of North Texas ), Texas Women's University, etc. Ivy grows better in the South anyway.
9. We have a ready supply of workers. We could just open the border when we need some more.
10. We have essential control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.
11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. We don't have an Army, but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call the Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over Chuck Norris and a couple of Texas Rangers.
12. We are totally self-sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs, and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables, and let's not forget seafood from the Gulf. Also, everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. Don't need any food.
This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have.
Now to the rest of the United States under President Obama:
Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Obama will be able to drive around in his big 9 mpg SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.
You won't have any TV as the Space Center in Houston will cut off satellite communications.
You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes, but since Mr. Obama has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas as long as you survive the 2000 years it will take to get enough heat from Global Warming.
Signed, The People of Texas
--------------
Here was the reply:
Go for it Texas. Texas also leads the nation in number of prisoners, ranks near bottom when it comes to health care, has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates, ranks at the bottom when it comes to number of people with high school diplomas, ranks at the bottom when it comes to test scores. It also is the most death penalty-happy state in the union, which does little to curb its crime rate, and Dallas-Fort Worth made the American Lung Association's list of most polluted cities.
It's funny how the argument just ignores certain realities, especially the "We'll control the space industry!" pitch. This argument ignores that Cape Canaveral is in Florida, so I'm not sure where they plan to launch from, and also ignores that even if NASA is based out of Houston, it's still funded by the federal government, which will presumably not continue to pay. So really it is "headquartered" in DC, has its main facility (including its primary launching pad) in Cape Canaveral Florida, as well as testing and research facilities around the country. Not to mention long term ongoing partnerships with the Russian, Japanese and European Space Agency. The loss of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston would be a setback for NASA, but since Houston is already in a prime hurricane zone, NASA already has ready standby basic backups to mission control at Cape Kennedy and at MCC Moscow.
Similarly vapid is the assumption that all the tech industries will continue to base themselves out of Texas despite the numerous tariff and tax implications that would arise with selling internationally rather than domestically to US customers.
The entire argument seems to be predicated on the idea that Texas can secede from the union and it will remain exactly the same as it is right now, as if frozen in time right before the Obama presidency.
Basically, it sounds like the typical male argument that "bigger is better". There are dozens of impressive medical establishments spread throughout the United States (Mayo clinics anyone?) It would be interesting to see Texas deal with hurricane after hurricane without the deep pockets of the U S of A.
But, if they wanna go, that's their decision. Most would rather stay here in America and help Barack Hussein Obama rebuild it from the mess that Bush/Cheney have left us with as they go off to their gated mansions in Paraguay and leave us to deal with the failed experiment called "unfettered markets."

Here’s the thing: the minute you think things were better then than they are now, I know that you’re just missing your white male privilege. It’s really rough now that people expect you to pay people the same, and not sexually assault others, and allow everyone to get married.
Poor, picked on man.

Yeah. 99% of Texans just roll their eyes when they read that stuff. I wonder how well the independent country of Texas would do when all its major cities (and revenue centers) declare they would prefer to be part of the original 50 states.

The Federalist is an extreme right-wing publication. This editorial is full of exaggerations and straight-out nonsense, and the man who wrote it is neither a scholar nor a seasoned politician. This is a radical opinion piece and, while we all have opinions, I truly believe our country has more that unites us than that which divides us.
I think the recent rallies regarding guns, the NRA, and seeing so many youth registering to vote has frightened those on the right, just as a few years ago seeing the uprising of the Tea Party frightened the left. Change will be coming, and the usual complement of “I’m going to Canada” (aka I’m taking my toys and leaving!) will follow. To me, this is just another version of that sentiment.

I don't know about "divorce" (it sounds more like "secession" to me) but I do agree with him that our nation is more divided than it's ever been. I can't remember ever hearing the vitriol so loudly, so persistently, and with as much nastiness as it is today...and that's from both sides. My guess is that it will get worse before it gets better.

I don't know how we will ever be back together. There are people coming out of the wood work with ideas that must have been festering for quite a while. I am 'seeing' the fire hoses used on people, the school buses being rocked while occupied with little kids, little girls blown up in a church. In this day and age judicial nominee who would not say that Brown v Board of Educations was the right decision! It is scary.
