Hello all! I don't have much to report so far this week, so I've got a question instead. Would you all prefer a (more or less) weekly thread like I've been posting, a two week thread or a monthly thread?

I like the weekly thread -- it's pretty easy to find. I'd get confused with every two weeks, and I'd worry that a monthly thread might get lost in the crowd. That's only if you don't mind setting it up weekly -- the "more or less" works perfectly.
I'm so glad I found you -- I like sharing and reading about everyone's runs and walks. I've gotten great advice! And I'm in awe of everyone.

Hello!
As long as it doesn't end up being a pain in the rear for you, I agree with the reasons laid out by maryannscraps and like the weekly threads.

I'm in the whatever you want to do crowd. I like not letting the thread get buried. This thread is a huge part of my motivation. If I don't get out and walk, I can't come post about it. LOL I have been doing so good keeping up with things and have even dropped a few pounds.

I like the weekly thread:) Well my aerobic workouts lasted about a week lol. I miss running and am going to start up again tomorrow. I have a November race I need to train for and after taking 2.5 weeks off I really don't want to start back at the beginning again.

I love the weekly threads! I'm willing to volunteer to start a thread on Monday if you don't have time. I don't want to step on your toes, however, and won't unless you give me permission to. I am also perfectly okay if the weekly threads aren't every 7 days exactly, if you want to post them yourself when you have time.

I too love the weekly threads and am happy to step up to help if it's too much or it's a busy work for you, Yoki. The weekly threads are another layer of accountability for the training for me and I enjoy reading what everyone else is doing. And we're all in different stages of training and in different rotations working toward races or goals so it's nice to talk about *that* weeks goals, the accomplishments, and how we're feeling. And speaking of weekly goals, I'm on week 2 of my mega-super-shin-splint rehab and it's going really well. I think the strength exercises my Doc has me doing, I'm going to keep in my training program. They're specific exercises that should help keep injuries from happening again. **should** Today I got in some good aqua jogging and a bit of outside walking. I also ride horses 5 or 6 days a week and I haven't been able to do any ground work and lunging because the work in the arena, sand, has been hard to walk in without straining my shins. Today it was fine and everyone in the barn got a good workout too. I have to admit I am just amazed at how much shin splints can wreak such havoc! I had no idea. I've never had them before and it's just a real bugger.

The tribe has spoken! (Long time Survivor watcher - couldn't resist ...) It's no problem for me to do a weekly(ish) thread. I just wanted to make sure that was working for y'all, too. Anna*Banana - I'm glad the rehab exercises are working! I had a serious case of shin splints that I ignored & tried to run through. It ended up that I couldn't walk without pain. I went through PT & still do some of the exercises. I was so excited when my PT cleared me to try running the length of my driveway!

I have a question for those that run in races of 10K or more. Do you have a strategy that encompasses your heart rate? One of the ways I used to run, 20 years ago, was to use my heart rate. 75-80% of max HR during the first 2/3 of a race and then trying to step it up the last 1/3 with a final push the last mile. That was how I paced myself. I do not ever remember saying my goal was a specific 12 min/mile, for example. And I don't remember what others were doing. But that was when I was young and I had extra in me to run. Now my goals are about finishing injury free but would like to have a more strategic goal that listens to my body rather than my watch. Of course staying under the minimum so I don't get picked up in a sweep at the end of the race. hahaha

I like the weekly posts. I enjoy reading of everyones successes. As some of you might remember I'm going to run my first ever 5k (sorry but it's a big deal to this 50 yo asthmatic) on October 4th. I was thinking i want to make a running playlist. What is your favorite song when you run? I plan on taking your suggestions and making my playlist and take the running Peas along with me

For power songs, anything by the Dropkick Murphys (Tessie, Shipping Back to Boston, The Boys are Back) Sweet songs: Cups, Crayola Doesn't Make a Color Anything by Florence + The Machine: Dog Days are Over, Cosmic Love Beyonce (Crazy in Love is my current favorite!)
I tend to mix it up based on whatever songs my daughter is dancing to currently.

My running list includes: Jump, Van Halen Bright Side of the Road, Van Morrison Moondance, Van Morrison Brown Eye Girl, Van Morrison (Yeah, I'm a Van Morrison fan...) Babylon, David Gray Viva la Vida, Cold PLay No Such Thing, John Mayer Your Wildest Dreams, The Moody Blues You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Stevie Wonder Part of the Plan, Dan Fogelberg I Knew I loved You, Savage Garden
And ALWAYS the last song I play on a run is:
Happy, Pharrell Williams --- Because it's soooo upbeat I always end strong, physically and mentally, when I end with this song.

Loving all of the music selections! I am SOOOO bad at knowing the name of a song and who sings it so I can never seem to put together a decent play list. LOL I usually listen to audiobooks when I walk but sometimes, a change is good or if I finish an audiobook on a Thursday, I don't necessarily want to start a new audiobook on Friday since I don't usually walk on weekends and that is my primary audiobook listening time.
I have a question for all of the runners and walkers about shoes. Some of you know that I recently went to a running store (Run On) and bought my first pair of REAL running/walking shoes. I am now using Gear Tracker in Map My Walk to map the number of miles I put on my shoes. These miles only include my workout miles, not any distance that I might put on them if I don't change out of them immediately when I get home but if I do keep them on, I am not walking much and it is not on concrete like my walks are. I have had this pair of shoes since July 7th and I have put 258 miles on them. I was looking at the bottom of them today and I noticed that the tread is pretty much gone off of both shoes, the front part of my foot on the outside. In other words, on the side by my little toe. I suspect that this has happened for two reasons. For the first month or 6 weeks, I had a lot of pain on my left foot with the 2nd toe because I think I damaged it when I was walking with my old shoes. Also, I was having problems with blisters rubbing on my 2nd & 3rd toes on both feet from my toes rubbing together. Also, I think the natural slant of side roads and sidewalks is also a culprit. I am not having the pain and blister issues anymore. I use mole foam between the toes that were getting blisters and the toe that I think I damaged seems to have healed. So, all of this to say.............do you have this issue with your shoes? Do I need to go ahead and buy new shoes? I don't want to do power walks on shoes that might be damaging my feet if this might be causing me to walk wrong. Do you think this is happening because I might be stepping wrong? Any thoughts?

I also like a weekly thread if you are ok with it Yoki! Anna*Banana I use my HR in training but not in an actual event. For those I just work on pace. Most of my marathon training is at 65- 75% of effort but during the event I'll probably be running at 80-85%. If you're going to use HR you'll need to understand how much 'cardiac drift' affects you in longer races ie how much your HR increases over the course of the race without a change in pace and how much you need to slow down to keep your heart rate within a certain range. I prefer just to work on pace and time as I'm running with a certain finishing time in mind.

eebud - When you get a chance, bring your shoes to Run On and ask them. They should be able to give you some guidance about the wear & possible impact on your feet. If they don't/won't, look for another running store.

Anna*Banana - I don't incorporate my HR into my training. Every time I try to increase my speed, I seem to end up injured. I've made peace with slow-poke distance.

Love the song suggestions. I am always looking for new tunes. I have Melissa Etheridge's I Run For Life on my playlist. It is a song about when she found out she had cancer, and it really powers me through tough runs. The lyrics are powerful.

I usually don't post much to this thread, but I do read it for ideas. I like the weekly thread better because it's easier to find. I don't have a running playlist yet as my husband is doing the C25K with me and we talk about our day while we do the training. Thanks for all the song suggestions! My question - what kind of breathing do you do while running? I've found a ton of stuff on the internet about different breathing techniques and I think I could run better/longer if my breathing was under control more. This last run DH & I talked during our running portion and that seemed to help me a lot, but I know there will be a time when I won't be able to talk non-stop (like when I run at the gym by myself, people might look at me funny LOL) Thanks!

I just wanted to mention something I saw the other day driving down one of our main streets here. I noticed two people jogging toward each other - they didn't really seem to know each other at all - both looked like they were really struggling - kind of shuffling, but moving - both carrying a good bit of extra weight. As they approached each other one of them kind of gave a thumbs up to the other. Then, as they passed each other, one lady stuck her hand up for a high-five and the other one (after a moment) gave it back.
I am still smiling over that - absolutely LOVED seeing random people encourage each other - it was a lovely sight and I'll carry that with me for a long time. Hope one day I can give someone who needs it a high-five and a thumbs up!!!
