eebud - When you get a chance, bring your shoes to Run On and ask them. They should be able to give you some guidance about the wear & possible impact on your feet. If they don't/won't, look for another running store. Thanks! I think I will do that. I suspect they will be able to help. From everything I am told by others in my area, the people are very knowledgeable. I was happy with them with my first shoe purchase but I am a novice and don't know what to look for or ask. LOL I am a little hesitant to try to make any kind of major change since I do think that at least part of the wear was due to the pain I was having for a while. I don't want them to try to sell me a shoe that corrects something that may or may not be a problem today. I wish I had paid more attention to the bottom of my shoes from the beginning.

You're right that they can see what's going on based on the wear on your shoes. when i got new shoes recently the folks here (Fleet Feet) looked at the wear on my old shoes. It's kind of amazing what they can pick up on by looking at your shoes (bottom and sides) and how you run. Good luck!

I had such a great run yesterday. I did 45 minutes of 2 min run/1 min walk along the rail trail with the dog. What a perfect fall afternoon. I feel really good today. The combination of run/walk, myrtl exercises, and some yoga poses has me feeling much better.
Now I don't want it to snow -- I didn't know how nice it was to run outside. I'm not sure I want to go back to the treadmill after a week like this.
I started a little bit of yoga with a beginner's tape on amazon prime. I could only do about 20 minutes -- totally different muscles than I'm used to using!

Anna*Banana - I don't incorporate my HR into my training. Every time I try to increase my speed, I seem to end up injured. I've made peace with slow-poke distance. Elaine and I were just talking about coming to terms and being at peace with running for as long as we can, as opposed to goal oriented running for time and increased distances.

That is the reason I don't run and only power walk. When I try to incorporate running, I injure myself. The most that I run is a bit of a jog to get our of the way if I am crossing a street and a car is waiting. I tried to pay more attention to the way feet turn as I walk. I did find that I tend to put pressure on the front outside of my foot as I go. This, along with the natural slope of the sidewalks/roads, probably explain the wear on my shoes. I will probably try to get into Run On this week or maybe Sunday (if they are open). We'll see what they suggest. I now have 264 miles on these shoes. I had hoped to get more than that but I am a bit worried about the wear and having it cause injury.

i didn't run this morning because i have a 5k tonight @ 8pm. Totally forgot about it, and not sure if it will be too crowded (or hilly!) to run, but i'll get 5k in one way or another.
Remind me not to sign up for a night run again. It's weird.

sbartist, that is my old running route! When I started running it was always through that area, and I would run into the filming crew quite a bit. It was always so fun to watch 5-0 film and try to get a glance of that super hottie Alex O'Loughlin (sp). Funny aside, my car has been in two episodes. Once at Magic Island and the other when they filmed outside my office on Keenau St. Ha ha!

This thread is a huge part of my motivation. If I don't get out and walk, I can't come post about it. LOL I have been doing so good keeping up with things and have even dropped a few pounds. Good for you eebud!

The tribe has spoken! (Long time Survivor watcher - couldn't resist ...) It's no problem for me to do a weekly(ish) thread. I just wanted to make sure that was working for y'all, too. And thank you for creating the threads. Definitely motivational for me as well, and I like to read whatever else is up to. It is like having someone cheer/clap for you when you are running. Ü

I have several different running playlists, because I listen when I am walking as well. And I don't want to hear the same song all the time. And the playlists are different lengths based on how many songs are on them.

I just wanted to mention something I saw the other day driving down one of our main streets here. I noticed two people jogging toward each other - they didn't really seem to know each other at all - both looked like they were really struggling - kind of shuffling, but moving - both carrying a good bit of extra weight. As they approached each other one of them kind of gave a thumbs up to the other. Then, as they passed each other, one lady stuck her hand up for a high-five and the other one (after a moment) gave it back. I am still smiling over that - absolutely LOVED seeing random people encourage each other - it was a lovely sight and I'll carry that with me for a long time. Hope one day I can give someone who needs it a high-five and a thumbs up!!! I love this too. I certainly do not have a runners body and have packed weight on (more in the past few months after an Rx change) and totally feel like whale on the run. Running and a dietary change will hopefully change all that. But even a nod or a smile from what I perceive to be super fit people passing me in the opposite direction, can boost my self-esteem.

Started running more, walking less. Trying to run four mornings a week. I'm out the door at 5:30 and done with my run by 6. i love the peace and quiet. Averaging a 12:40 mile, but I'm fine with that . I want to be comfortable and see improvement. Took 25 seconds off last weeks time. Awesomeness.

I don't really watch the show (or much TV at all for that matter), so that is why I am not in any of the photos.

After spending 2.5 hours first on the phone trying to get an appointment for my older son, when military medicine decided I was a hysterical mom and wouldn't see him, I finally gave up and took him to local urgent care. He has acute bronchitis or pneumonia (without X-ray couldn't confirm it), and are treating it the same way - z-pack, two different inhalers, codeine cough syrup - and then I had the pleasure of having to call back to the military clinic that wouldn't see us to ask them to send in a referral for the urgent care visit so that Tricare would pick up part of the doctors appointment that they should have provided without additional cost to us. So, after spending 6 frustrating hours dealing with what should have been just an inconvenience, I was ready to lace on my running shoes. Of course, by this time, d [HASH]2 was due home in 50 minutes, so I only got 3.5 miles in, but it was better than playing sloth on the couch. Running helped my mental health somewhat, but I'm still really grumpy and ticked off at Tricare and Walter Reed.

Well, I was planning on 8 miles to take it easy for my last long run before next weekend's 1/2. But my body had other plans ... At about mile 2 I got a sharp pain on the side of my foot - kind of below my ankle bone. I stopped to stretch & walked. It felt a little better so I tried running - nope. Went through the cycle a few more times as I made my way towards home. Now I've iced, stretched, taken an Aleeve and am trying very hard not to freak out about the race in 8 days. It is still very uncomfortable when I get up to move around.
Ugh.

Soak your feet in an ice bath for 15 minutes and continue doing that for the next few days. It will suck, but it really helps with inflammation. I did that for a couple of weeks prior to my races last weekend for my PF, and I was amazed at the difference it made. Injuries are the worst especially when you have a race coming up.

Yoki, I agree with Kymberlee: ice, ice, ice. I'm always surprised by how much icing works - I never used it until I started running, and it still seems like a miracle treatment to me. Now, if it only worked on my blackened toenails. I managed one on each foot from the Disneyland Half, and the one on my left foot is a different toe than the one I damaged during the Pittsburgh Half. I'll be sending healing vibes to you all week so that you can enjoy your race.

Elaine - sorry to read about your son and the runaround you both endured. I hope he feels better soon. And yes, a run is good for the soul.
Yoki - healing vibes being sent your way.
Blackened toenails mean you are out there running - which is a good thing!

Thanks Kymberlee, elaine & sbartist! I iced it a few times yesterday, wore a compression calf sleeve & stayed off my feet for most the day. Woke up to a much improved situation this morning & am not feeling so doom & gloom about my prospects next weekend. I will continue to ice & take it easy and hope for the best!

elaine, I hope your DS is ok. I really hate dealing with medical stuff. I have had to do it a lot over the last year and some people are so difficult to work with. I have changed doctors before in large part because of the staff that can't seem to do anything right. It can be so frustrating. I'm glad you were able to get out and get a run in. Hopefully that let you run off some steam.
Yoki, glad to hear that you are doing better today. I hope you get to run your half this weekend. Take care of the pain and hopefully all will be great this weekend.
Well, I hit the Run On store today and I came home with what I think will be an awesome pair of shoes. These are so cushy. I debated between these and one other pair. The other pair had soles that were made out of some kind of tire product or something like that. Anyway, they should have held up better than my last ones with the wear they had. But, instead, I bought Hoka One One's. I can't wait to try them out tomorrow. They are super light too which is one thing I loved about my other shoes. Keeping fingers crossed that these will work out well and last more than 270 miles (that is how many miles I put on the last pair).

I really think I am going to like these. It might feel a little weird when I first start off.....maybe the first mile or two. I am curious about having 3 pairs that you rotate between. Do you have 3 identical pairs........that is, the same style? If not, does it feel weird to switch between different styles? Mine are Clifton. Does it help them last longer to have multiple pairs and maybe don't wear the same ones day after day? I guess I am thinking that a mile is a mile is a mile and if I get 400 miles out of them and I had 2 pairs, I would get 800 total mile regardless of switching up or wearing the same ones day after day until I wore them out and then switching. I hope this makes sense. I am curious if I decide that I really like these if it would be worthwhile to get a 2nd pair and switch them up rather than wearing the same pair of shoes 5 days a week.

I hope this makes sense. I am curious if I decide that I really like these if it would be worthwhile to get a 2nd pair and switch them up rather than wearing the same pair of shoes 5 days a week. I have three different styles - I first bought the Stinson Tarmacs when they only had 3 different models for road shoes (they are a fairly new company). They are a little wide and the 2013 model doesn't have that second eyelet up top - which I always use because I have a narrow heel - and my foot slips a little in them. I did run my first half marathon in them, but it was pouring rain and sleeting the whole time and my foot was submerged in water a few times. I literally poured water out of my shoes when changing out of them after the race. They have never quite been the same - I wear them for shorter 3-4 mile runs. I don't think road shoes are meant to be run long distance in the water. I then hen tried the Bondi 3s that were so wide I couldn't lace them tight enough, so I sent them back to Hoka and traded them in on the Conquest - which was their brand new road shoe in April. I wore them for my second Half. I love them, but they have a piece that rubs my bunion on my right foot, so I have to wear a silicone piece over it when I run in them. My feet weren't pretty after that race! Finally, I picked up a pair of Kailua Tarmac's from REI for only $75 - they were on sale, and I had a coupon. I liked them much more than I thought I would - they are very light. I wore them for the Disneyland Half. And not too much damage except for one toenail on each foot. at the Disneyland Expo, Anna ( Anna*Banana) and I tried on all the new Hoka's - so many new pretties! She went home with one of the wider pairs, I can't remember which, and I would have bought the new Stinson Lites if they had them in my size. Rotating between pairs allows me to always wear dry shoes (my feet sweat and soon it will be rainy and snowy again), and I do get to keep them longer (time-wise) because I'm putting on fewer miles on them per week.
