paint would you choose? Our new home has an open floor plan and I'm struggling with what color to choose.I have spent hours on this and I am just ready to be done. My main concern is if I choose something like Softer Tan, Macadamia, or Accessible Beige, it will just be a sea of browns. But I'm nervous to pick something like Sea Salt or Silvermist for fear it will make the honey-colored oak stand out even more.
Can you offer me any suggestions as to what Sherwin Williams colors you love with oak, please?
P.S. Painting the trim is not an option right now.

I have the same dilemma. I have been searching for something that will look more modern but still comfortable (not a true gray). I am currently leaning toward greige colors. This is my pinterest board. We will have to hire someone to paint, since the kitchen/living room has vaulted ceilings. So that makes me feel even more nervous. Changing it if I don't like it won't be easy or cheap. I think next month I am going to just set a date for it to be done and get some samples and try them out first. What I have read is that you do want to accentuate the oak. Cooler colors will make the oak stand out and give some contrast. Most of the paint colors that I like (in houses or on Pinterest) are shown in houses with either dark or white trim. The contrast is what makes the color look great, but I am not sure if the color would look bland with oak trim. I hope you get some ideas here that will help both of us! Make sure to show pics of what you end up choosing!

We have SW Accessible Beige with Alder wood which has a similar honey tone to oak. I love the paint, it’s a very warm neutral choice. Beside greys are on their way out. Have you thought of a warm white maybe too?

We are using SW Crescent Cream and we have medium oak cabinets that are original to the house, and wood laminate flooring in the living/dining room that is new.

Thank you so much for the replies so far, ladies. I'm taking a fresh look at greiges and I also hadn't much considered warm whites. We have always loved SW Whole Wheat with our honey oak pergo in our current home and Antique White is on the same strip. Hmmmm.
Off to check out Crescent Cream...

We have honey oak floors and in the past the cabinetry was honey oak as well (prior to remodeling). Benjamin Moore Linen White worked well with all that oak. It's a warm white. We still have the oak flooring, but white cabinetry now. The walls and trim are Sherwin Williams Alabaster. The designer actually recommended the BM Linen White, but I wanted a change after 20+ years.

Following this since I have the same problem -- and no designer sense what-so-ever!

Look into greige colors. They are a warmer gray.

I was at Target the other day and saw that they have Joanna Gaines paint now. I liked the color Gatherings and just saw that you can order samples online. In that color you can order a peel and stick sheet for $2, or an 8oz sample for $8. Not all of the colors are available in the peel and stick. Southern Grown looks like a good color as well. If I decided on one of these colors I would most likely have the painter color match it to the paint he uses.
We currently have Behr Winter garden in our kitchen/living room. I really don't want anything similar. I don't remember the name of the color we have in our bedroom, but it is a beige that ended up having pink or red undertones. It took awhile for that to grow on me. In the room it looked beige, but when I looked down the hallway into the room, it looked pink. So, I am trying to be more aware of undertones, and don't want yellow, red, or orange undertones.

We have Accessible Beige. I love it. I’m still in the process of painting. The whole house is going this color.

No. I have white doors and trim but google searched the color with wood trim and doors. Ok I didn't want to say anything offensive if this was your home. *I* think this color looks terrible with the oak trim. It almost has a greenish cast to it. I am not a fan of this look at all.

We do not have the oak you describe, but we do have warm tones in all of our wood. For a warm white/very light warm beige look at SW Oyster Bar (not Oyster Bay, which is gray).
Personally, if you have a lot of oak, I would just own that and decorate to make it look beautiful. “Not trendy” doesn’t have to mean ugly. Using cooler tones to contrast with the oak could actually be very nice. Use gray-blues, brick reds and a gold that goes with the oak in your decorating.

We have that set up at our house too. I wanted to try and update our kitchen when we opened up the wall between the kitchen and "parlor" (old farmhouse),so I went with a grey. I HATE it. I wish I had gone more with a beige, or warm white color. I plan on repainting it sometime soon, but can't get my dh to repaint it now. So will have to wait a few years. It just makes the room....colder? and just doesn't seem as homey/warm then I would like. I am going to repaint it, and then I will use my other accents to take away from the all beige colors. I'm ok with that now.

Here’s a good article from a design standpoint about accenting or minimizing oak wood: www.kylieminteriors.ca/the-best-paint-colours-to-go-with-oak-wood/I read somewhere recently that when a decorating trend hits the mass market stores it’s already on it’s way out. There are lots of articles online too about new trends in home decor 2018 but as always most of us will have a blend of dated and modern touches. My in laws did their whole house up in the early 70s and kept it that way well into the 2000s so we swore we would never do our house all at once lol! I’ll try to do a photo for you but I’m low tech and the lighting at the moment is photographing darker than real life.

Don't fight with what you have, just go with it. There are many ways to make your home look inviting. Don't get hung up on trends.

I recently painted my kitchen. My whole house is warm tones. We have medium toned hardwood floors in every room except the kitchen and the bathroom where we have warm colored tiles. I decided on a light taupe for the walls, a medium taupe for the cabinets, and orange for the soffet. I love how my kitchen turned out. I used valspar paint from Lowe's.

I have an open concept home. I have tall ceilings and a ton of light. All my trim work is white.I picked a neutral color thinking I could do my own painting later as our builder wanted $250 for each color change.I love the color I chose so much I'm leaving it alone.I went with SW 7012 Creamy. It looks beige on my computer but it's not. It's an off white with a slight tint of yellow. I have it through the whole house and I love it.Do look at the color samples from the store for a better idea of the true color.

Ooooooh I feel your pain! That’s exactly what we got when we bought this house. Oak everything. And to top it off, brown walls all over the entire open concept downstairs and in every room upstairs. Not a soft sandy brown. But freaking chcocolate milk brown. I hated it soooo much! So dark and sad, esp at night.
We love blue. And there is blue accent tile in our kitchen backsplash. So we got a whole bunch of samples and settled on Afternoon Siesta by I think Beher (Home Depot). Painted the entire downstairs and upstairs landing and ridiculously tall entry way this pretty blue.
It is so much happier in this house now hat the dreaded brown is gone!! And it makes the wood pop, and gives our house this beachy vibe that I totally dig now. I no longer want to rip all my cabinets and trim out of my house. Couldn’t be happier (though I did seriously consider a light grey).

Nice pierkiss! The right blue or green works wonders with oak.
