it seems to be some joke? or sarcastic appreciation for patriotism? i don't get it
i know that means i am either old or out of touch
i saw some young people post photos of a 'merica party
they all wore over the top flag clothes
those headbands with big glittery stars on them
everything was red/white/blue
then the hash tags were like #whitetrashparty and then i got confused
are they mocking patriotism?

It started out as a put down for trashy people. Now it seems that everyone is using it as a way to be positive about America and the 4th of July. Bugs the living daylights out of me.

Maybe it's not patriotism as a whole but rather they are mocking the over the top, kind of crazy over the top style of patriotism?

but i am not sure if that is the appropriate reaction
when i google images it comes across as mockery and an excuse to get drunk

I always think of the song from that movie "Team America."

I think it screams ignorance and find it about as patriotic as waving a confederate flag.

I thought it was mocking redneck, white trash, over the top displays of patriotism.
But I've only ever actually seen it online. I've never heard of people actually having 'merica parties or anything like that.

I don't get it because how is mocking them any better than mocking anyone else. And my DH and DS usually get matching red/white/blue shirts for the season. I say whatever.

I haven't heard of a party like that before. Could it be a "patriotic" version of an ugly sweater Christmas party? If so, I don't like the idea of it.

I've never heard of people actually having 'merica parties or anything like that. Me too. In any case, even if it's an excuse to have a party,I don't think it's exactly mocking patriotism, but rather embracing our national bird, the American Redneck. I have too many legitimate things to be annoyed about four this to bother me.

I've never seen it in person either. eta-and my guess is that it is about mocking the Tea Party as well.

When I've seen it used, it's typically said accompanied with an eyeroll. Usually in response to something considered embarrassing for our country. Can't say I've seen it used in a positive aspect.

I must be way out of touch with everything, because I have never seen this!! But, because I am exceedingly nosy, I'm off to Google it.

tag has been around forever. it was an 'old man's beer' until the hipters latched onto it. Because hipsters are too cool to drink mainstream beer.

I've always taken it as a way of people insulting those that they find "too patriotic" and "beneath them".

its just a funny saying for something super stereotypical American. I think it started as redneck memes captioned "merica!"

I have a pinterest board titled 'merica
It is mocking either redneck, trashy, over the top, the tea party, or other things otherwise embarrassing to me as an American.
I didn't know the word was now used as actual patriotism.

Around here, I see 'murica. Maybe it's because we're extra-redneck in this part of the world? I dunno...I think it's dumb and annoying.

Whenever I see "Merica", I immediately think of an episode of South Park. It's this horrible episode where people from the future are coming back to present day and stealing current peoes jobs and working for pennies. The current time people were getting all wound up and screaming, "Merica", and "they took our jobs!" at rallies. In the end they decide the best way to put a stop to it is for everyone to become gay, to wipe out the future, and immediately begin engaging in anal sex. Like I said, horrible episode.

I would not describe it as patriotic, or mocking patriotism.
It's mocking the ridiculous stereotype that has developed of Americans, which is unflattering in all sorts of ways but isn't that far from the truth in some situations.

That's how my teens use it, too. I haven't heard about it in a patriotic mocking manner around here, but will see what they have to say when they wake up.

I've seen it used in captions of pictures of humongous portions of food, like burgers, steaks and anything bacon.
I'm not too worked up about it.
