I grew up in the South and we always had elephant ears at the local fairs. Yummy!

Yes. It used to be my grandson's favorite treat at Cedar Point.

The Oregon Zoo's website says they've been selling elephant ears for over 35 years (Theirs are seriously so good!) Here's a little post about them.

I think I'm meaning something different - palmiers look the same shape as elephant ears, but they aren't fried. They're a typical buttery pastry that's baked so the sugar carmelizes.
GypsyGirl, the palmiers you are thinking of, are they fried? I'm pretty sure the ones my mom made were baked. I've never had one at the fair. Now I'm not sure if they are the same thing!
That is what I consider to be an elephant ear - crispy baked and flaky and sugary.

Yes, for sure! Where did you grow up? I’m from Cleveland. HeY! I am from the east side of Cleveland and now live in Chicago- which suburb are you from? ETA: Where are all of you former NE Ohioans from?? I was raised in Eastlake, lived in Concord and then Chagrin Falls. Where was everyone? I didn't realize there were so many here--

What talking about food, what you refer to as elephant ears is more familiar to me as Indian Fry Bread or sopapillas. To me, elephant ears are the same thing as Palmiers. Whatever they are called, both are delicious!
