I'm about 50 miles from the fire, and yesterday was pretty hazy, but we couldn't really smell anything. Today was much better. Hope they can contain it soon.

my friend who lives in Nevada is having lots of air pollution problems, and she's not very healthy at all.

Wow. I've been wondering if the fire is in the area that my DH and I drove through last summer when we drove from Lake Tahoe to Santa Cruz....it was terribly dry and brown and we saw miles of totally dead grassland and vineyards.
Lake Tahoe is one of our favorite places in the country and we are discovering Cali by driving from Lake Tahoe.
I hope you all stay safe and the rain comes to Cali soon and the fire gets put out...

This is not at all on the same level as the loss of property and potential loss of life, but still interesting to me, as I follow triathlon pretty closely.
Ironman Lake Tahoe was supposed to happen on Sunday, September 21st. Training for an Ironman takes roughly 20-25 hours/week of preparation and many athletes start building toward it a year in advance. Then factor in the travel costs etc. to get to the race and you get the idea of the commitment involved.
They cancelled the event early Sunday morning as 3000 athletes were lining up on the beach to begin the swim. The air quality was to blame.
This fire has some pretty wide-reaching impacts and it's not over yet. It's such a shame to know it never needed to happen.

the fire is 35% contained..it is windy and expanding and will not get any significant rain in this storm. it will still take weeks to put out...

We are supposed to head to South Lake on Thursday. Our dd who lives there said that the smoke comes and goes depending on the winds. I cannot believe someone who lives in the area (the supposed arsonist) would even think of lighting his own area on fire.

I would stay away from the area, unless you live there.
we smelled smoke in the Bay Area yesterday, hundreds of miles away.
it's not healthy to breathe this air.
I have been opening doors (before we smelled smoke) because it's been warm and we don't have air conditioning.
turning on the news now!

The air today is the worst it's been. Our ER is overrun with sick people. If you spend a few minutes outside, your eyes burn and you start coughing. Hoping for storm relief later tonight and tomorrow.

Ammaliatrice - what hospital are you at? DD works at Barton. We are on standby waiting to decide if we are going to visit dd. I really, really, really wanted to visit her and go to the Genoa Candy Dance on Saturday, but our health is certainly more important.

Wow, that really is an amazing picture and quite beautiful, until you realize what it is. Living in San Diego, I fully understand the devastation fires can bring. I pray they get it under control soon.
