It wouldn't bother me. I lived down the street from a cemetary for several years. We were friends with the caretakers, we visited them all the time.

The only problem we have with living down the street from a cemetery is a coyote problem. Otherwise our cemeteries in SoCal have art shows and lectures. I walk to the Day of the Dead mass celebrations every year and look forward to getting my annual cemetery swag bag.

Honestly, it would bother me far more living in an old church. For me, the fact that it used to me sacred space would be insurmountable. It may sound weird, but the house felt lonely. Like it missed having people there.

Ok, the practical part of me wants to ask two questions. Is there a well for your water? And is the cemetery downhill from you? I would be super cautious and have the water tested during inspection. But otherwise, it wouldn’t bother me. Janet It's city water.

I wouldn't be thrilled about a cemetery but I wouldn't completely discount a house because of it either. Most likely I wouldn't be interested in living near a modern, active cemetery. The people going in and out and sadness of seeing burials frequently does not appeal to me. A historic cemetery probably wouldn't bother me. But then you can get vandalism and problems with unsavory types that like to wander around those so.... I really don't know.
Before I bought my house a few months ago I would have said no to living next to a church. But the church next door to me is historic and while they do rent it out for events I've been here since April and it hasn't been rented yet. I'm unsure if the church has a cemetery on the grounds or not. Everything is very run over with dry weeds that are taller than I am so I can't see any head stones. But it does seem like a church would have a cemetery.

Most likely a big no. If I walked in the home & felt a negative "energy" the decision would be a resounding no. That feeling has happened a few times without a cemetery nearby.
Good luck w/your decision!

There was a pea way back that moved into a church and posted some pics. I forgot what she did with all the pews.

Maybe. It would depend on how the traffic around the cemetery is. For instance, there was an old cemetery in the next town over from where I grew up. It was the stuff of urban legend with the teens. If you drove the driveways in a particular way, it formed three sixes. And, down at the bottom of a hill at the back of the cemetery, there was a circular clearing. Satan worshippers met there and did animal sacrifices. (Shhh. We were bored country kids in tiny little towns with vivid imaginations.) I wouldn’t move in next to a cemetery that has frequent burials or loony kids trying to have fun.

Sure I would. I like Cemeteries and find them peaceful. It wouldn’t bother me to live near one.

My first apt, in senior yr of college was across the street from an old cemetery. It was filled with beautiful old trees.
I would have no problem doing it again.

I would buy that house in a second. Great bones; great possibilities.
Wouldn’t care about the cemetery, except maybe for resale, but I always figure if I’m willing to buy something questionable - within reason, financially - somebody else will be willing to buy in the future. (We sold a “hard to sell“ house in four days.)
Why does your MIL think you’ll burn in hell?

I live next to a cemetery, a rather large one. I live in a large condo complex and can see it from my 2nd floor, the main living area It doesn’t bother me at all. TBH, it’s kind of funny in a way, there’s a lot of music played at funerals. If I’ve got the windows open, I hear everything from Mariachi music to “When The Saints Go Marching” on clarinet. I thought I might be creeped out by the whole situation, but I’m not. I enjoy the quiet, when there’s no music!!!

Just salt the foundation and smug the house.

I haven’t read any responses yet, so if this has gone off the rails, please excuse me. I wouldn’t only because I think it would harm property values and be more difficult to resell. Plus I wouldn’t want to worry about whether doing yard work, having a party, etc would disrupt a service or a grieving individual.
It doesn’t creep me out in any way.

The weird spot above the porch in the outside pic gave me pause though heh heh heh

Yes, but we were also in a historical house and neighborhood all through High School in Utah. It was just down the street. I would walk up there sometimes. I find them peaceful. My mom was obsessed with them for a while. Which puzzled us quite a bit when she wanted to be cremated. She had what she wanted on her grave! She was a big history both in family history and world history and such. The house you showed is beautiful but bit of an odd layout from the pics? is it bigger on the inside ?

We live a block and a half from a mid-sized cemetery. It's been fine for over 25 years. The neighbors are quiet and more importantly, it means there will be no development of the property. So no chance of yet another strip mall, chain restaurant or high rise building going in. The only issue they are having now is a colony of coyotes has moved into the far back area. Otherwise, it's not been a problem. I know some of the neighbors go over during the day to walk/job on the paths. Not something I'd ever do though. Just looked at the house photos. It's lovely!

Angie, you are so lucky to have found this house. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to buy a converted church, and a cemetery next door would be the icing on the cake. I agree with your DH - the neighbours will be quiet - well, we hope so. lol. And writing a book about the church is a wonderful idea.
