We moved to San Diego from Orange County over the summer, and DD left a fantastic group of friends behind. Nobody has come down to see her since we've lived here, and she misses them all terribly. So for her birthday (10/11), I told her we could drive up for the day and meet a group of them at Knott's Berry Farm (theme park). That was set for next weekend, 10/5. She was THRILLED.
Then on Saturday, she got nailed in the head during her soccer game. She was fine until yesterday, when she woke up crying that her head hurt and she was nauseous. Uh-oh... I was pretty sure that I knew what was happening, but a trip to the doctor confirmed it - concussion. And because it's her second (she had a similar one last year around this time, although this one is definitely affecting her more), the doctor wants her to be seen by a neurologist, which we can't do until 10/13. Until then - and until he clears her - no PE, no soccer... and the Knott's trip is a no-go. Can't risk her getting further hurt on the roller coasters, and there's no way a 14 year old is going to go there and NOT go on the coasters. (At least not THIS 14 year old!)
She's so upset... She hasn't made close-enough friends here to want to do anything with them for her birthday, so it'll be a pretty low-key event. I told her that once she's cleared by the neurologist, we can reschedule the day, but at this moment in time, that's not carrying much weight.
On top of that, she was supposed to try out for a club soccer team, but DH and I are thinking that maybe we shouldn't risk it. With each subsequent concussion, the risks are higher, and I'm just not sure it's worth it. DD actually agrees with us about that, which is good. She wants to try to switch over to track, and I think she'll be great at that. Plus, the risk of contact injuries is much lower - good thing.
I just feel so bad for her... <Sigh...>

How disappointing for your daughter! Can you nix the Knott's Berry Farm outing & plan something else less active? Mani/Pedi plus dinner /dessert with her friends?
I hope she's feeling better soon! DSs play soccer so I understand your concern. In fact, my friend's son was injured last night, and just diagnosed with a concussion today.

I'd give her two choices - do something that day with that group of friends that within the limits set by her doctor, or reschedule the Knotts Berry Farm trip to after she's medically cleared.
What a bummer. I hope she is well soon and has no lingering effects from the concussions.

What about doing medieval times or the pirate show that is there? Or even just meeting up with friends at a place like Dave and Busters for food and fun? I think I would change activity but keep the event. Hope she feels better!

I agree to just plan something else. Spa day does sound great, or dinner and a movie possibly? Mall day?

I would still take her to see her old friends and do a different activity. When she gets cleared by her doctor reschedule the Knott's Berry Farm trip.

I'm so sorry. We are a military family and I know it's tough for kids to make friends fast enough to invite for a birthday outing.
I would encourage you to plan something else with her friends, and keep the activity low key. Dave and Busters will all the flashing lights may be a bit overwhelming for someone recovering from a concussion. My DS had a concussion last spring after snowboarding. Same thing, woke up the next day with a killer headache. He missed 8 weeks of his junior year and was making up schoolwork until the very last day of school. I worry that it may be a while before she is medically cleared for roller coasters and her birthday will be a distant memory before she can ride them again. You want her completely and totally symptom free for at least two weeks before resuming sports or roller coasters, especially if this is her second concussion.

Thanks, everyone. I love the idea of doing something more low-key. Mani-pedis (and lunch or something) sound great, but there are some boys coming - not sure they'd be into that. LOL! We're still talking about it, and what we can do instead. Tonight she said she just wants to go out to dinner with us, but we'll see how she feels in the next few days.

I love the idea of Medieval Times. My kids would have loved it at that age. I've never been to the pirate show, but I think it might be a little too noisy for someone with a concussion.
I hope your DD recovers quickly.

Aww Tell her we all say Happy Birthday We were military and we moved overseas in the summer just a week before DS 11 birthday. We were still living in a hotel. We took him skating, bowling and to a movie that weekend. Had a cake and over bought on the gifts but it was still kinda sad as he knew no one there and had left a neighborhood behjnd that was full of kids who all played together. We would have had the party before we left but we took leave in route and went to my moms for a few weeks. We did do a little party there but with moving, packers and out processing housing we just didn't have time to plan a party by the time I thought of it. I felt bad and never let it happen again! Take her for a spa day hair nails etc or go do something she will enjoy that you normally don't splurge on.
Edited to add. I hope she feels better and heals quickly. The noggin is nothing to mess around with. I had a concussion and was nauseated for weeks. I also had to be on total brain rest...no tv, music, computer, reading moving around for 3 days. Just laying in the bed in a room as dark as possible. I caved after day 2 and watched tv, I just kept the volume low and watched stuff I didn't have to think about too much and mostly just listened. It was boooring...

I am sorry. I would definitely want to keep her safe and skip the theme park for the 5th but try a different event such as the ideas mentioned here. I hope she is okay and wishi her an early Happy birthday!

Oh no!! Poor thing has already been struggling enough, I'm so sorry she's got this now too! Hopefully you all can work together to come up with another idea that is equally fabulous for her.

What about getting a hotel room or one of the suite style rooms so there's more than one room. Girls can do man/period, swim at hotel pool, go somewhere special for dinner and then go back to hotel with a couple red box movies and snacks?

We actually decided last night that we're going to go up and have lunch for a bunch of her friends at an ice cream parlor. What's great is that more people will be able to go than could have gone to Knotts. So at this point, I think KK is OK with it all. Plus, once she's cleared to do more vigorous activities, we'll get the Knotts day rescheduled. And with the exception of having to drive 1.5 hours up there and back twice, everyone wins!

Are you going to Farrell's or there is another ice cream parlor around? We went there for one of DD's birthday parties with her cousins and it was really fun! I wish there was one closer since we had to drive up to OC for it too.

Aww! (((hugs))) to your dd.
I'm so sorry she got hurt.
Maybe you could still take her up to see her friends, but they could do a different activity. Go to a pottery place. Go to a photo kiosk and all get pics done together. Lunch out. Take in a movie if anything they want to see is playing.

It's sure to be a lot of fun. I grew up with them in PA and had birthday parties there myself when I was little. It's a real throw back!

I'm really sorry. I grew up here in San Diego and then went out of state for college. I came back after I graduated and found it so difficult to make new friends. There's just something about this city that makes people extremely cliquey and insular.

The ice cream isn't as good as I remember, but the hamburgers were amazing. They were better than that Slater's 50/50 place that's so popular now.

Granted I work from home, so I don't have many opportunities to meet new people to begin with. But even walking around the neighborhood, I'm really surprised by how un-friendly people are. Usually people will make eye contact, smile, say hi, but not here so much. Weird. Thankfully DD is (slowly) making friends in school. It's a process, though, and not quick. She'll get there, eventually.

Poor girl! I'm sorry she is having a rough time with making friends and now to deal with an injury. I hope she gets to feeling better soon and that you guys can make that trip. You are right about not taking her and her not going to tryouts right now. Concussions are nothing to play with.

Thanks again, everyone. We've actually decided that she won't try out for the new team - period - and probably won't return to soccer. Although she's quite good, we just don't feel it's worth the risk. This is already her second concussion from soccer, and with each one, the risks for complications are higher. Again, just not worth it. She's OK with it... She's been thinking about training and trying out for the track team in the spring, and we're all for that.

She'll get there, eventually. One thing I do notice about this area is that the parents grew up here and are raising their families here too. The good part of that is it says a lot about the area. The bad part is that many parents/kids already have their circle of friends and aren't so welcoming to add others. I have situations like being ok to watch people's kids when they got in a childcare bind but not being good enough to invite to their Halloween or Super Bowl parties. Luckily those two women moved but it's not exactly a friendly neighborhood. We moved here when DD was in 3rd grade. She did ok socially that year, but by 4th grade, she was eating lunch alone since she couldn't break into the already established friendships. DS had a better time of making friends since he's more outgoing and he started here in kindergarten. Now in high school, DD has a few close friends but it's still hard for her and even myself to make connections.
