I want to create a photo wall above my couch. I have 10 foot ceilings in my living room so it’s a good sized wall. Looking for any ideas.

Here's mine. I prefer very symmetrical, neutral, visually calm decor. My recommendation (from a decor class I took) is to pin or pull 15+ pictures of photo walls you like and that you would be happy if were in your home. As mentioned above, Pinterest is great for this. Just grab them without thinking about why you love them. Then, look at them as a whole (awesome if you can print them out), and look for what's common between them. Are most of them the same color frames, or mixed? Color photos or black and white? Lots of family photos/photos of people, or photos of places? Are they all equal distance apart, or more varied? Do the frames have different textures/sheens/shapes? Is anything besides photos, like mixed media, wood signs, letters, etc mixed in? That will help you determine what YOU like. For me, while I appreciate a well-done eclectic photo wall, it would make me insane in my house because it's not my taste. Yet I love it when I see it in someone's home with an eclectic feel, or on Pinterest. Pulling lots of photos and finding the commonalities help weed out the "noise" of what others like vs what you like.

I have seen people take the things they love and just put them on the floor and arrange them that way. They move them repeatedly until something speaks to them. I have also seen people take butcher paper and cut it out in different sizes and tape it to the wall to find a layout they like.

This is my photo wall. Sorry about the plastic sheeting over it. We were doing some painting in the room at the time and I haven't taken a pic of the wall since we filled it in with more pics. The frames started off as dark wood frames that I distress painted in white.

No photo to share, but I love the Ribba frames from Ikea because difference sizes line up perfectly together. We have the 16 x 20 frame hung vertically in the center, with two 9 x 20 frames on each side, also hung vertically. I like symmetry, so the outside frames each hold three 5x7 family photos. DH's family is on the left, mine on the right and I searched out similar photos so there is one of us with our siblings, one of the entire extended family and one of kids with cousins for each side. The middle frames are my kids with winter/snow photos on the left and summer/water photos on the right. With space for three photos, I searched for a good head shot of each and one of them together. The 16x20 has our favorite beach photo of the kids wave jumping. In our last house I had an eclectic mix of frames in the entry that I added to when I found a photo/piece of art that I liked & wanted to frame. It started as a collection of about 6 smaller frames and grew to almost 30 by the time we moved. All the frames were gold and varied from ornate to clean, simple lines.

Here's a quick shot of mine I took before I took the whole thing down last week. Doh! I LOVE my gallery wall but we are moving across town in a few days. I will certainly re-create this in my new house though. I'm a photographer who works out of my house and I get dozens of compliments on it from my clients.

Gina - LOVE your photo wall!!!!
My mom is an interior designer and she says to go with bigger pieces rather than a lot of small ones. Gina's photo is a good example! On 10 foot walls, little frames would look out of place. Would love to see pictures when you're done!

i don't have a picture but i copied one from a pottery barn picture. you don't have to copy it exactly. i like the symmetrical ones, but the one i did, while still symmetrical, was a little more out there than 9 pics in the exact same frame. i used the second one from the top for my inspiration. i made paper cutouts of the frames i had and started from the middle and started putting the papers on the wall. the biggest photo was probably 11x14. the smallest was 4x6. frames were from anywhere, aaron brothers, hobby lobby, dollar tree. i had equal spacing between my photos, because i like that. like ashley said, i can appreciate a wall with uneven spacing and all, i can't DO that. it makes my hair hurt! haha so, it all just depends on what YOU like. if you want 12 frames all the same in straight lines, do that. if you like something else, do that. google pottery barn gallery wall for inspiration.

p.s. i used command strips to hang everything so nothing would move if it got bumped.

Here is where I ended for the night. You can see the gold color that we are getting rid off. I just was to impatient and wanted the photo wall painted and started. So far, I LOVE it. I need a few more photos and I want a number 6. When my daughter passed away, the sign Life is Good seemed to be everywhere. I promised myself, and her that someday I would get to that spot that I would hang one of those signs. It has taken 8 years, but I’m thrilled that today I finally got here. I hope she would love it as well!!!!

We put this together when my daughter was first born last year. It was a fun project. We did lots of measuring and used math to sort out the angle of the vaulted ceiling to make sure things followed that same angle and everything was spaced apart evenly. Took us a couple afternoons, but it was a lot of fun.
