I'm trying to book a rental through VRBO for the last week of March/first week of April.
It will be my 2 sons (10 & 14) and I. We've been to Seattle before and hit the major tourist attractions already. So I don't feel the need to book a rental downtown or near Seattle Center. I'm not opposed to it either, but would rather do things we didn't do last visit. Plus my older son requested more outdoorsy activities. But it can't be too outdoorsy because I'd rather not have the hassle of a car rental. We do fine on public transportation and don't mind a good deal of walking.
Would Alki beach be ok that time of year? Obviously no swimming. There's a rental a block away from Alki beach that I'm interested in. Do the water taxis run in the off season?
I've also looked into rentals on Bainbridge island, but had the same concerns as Alki. Plus a lack of car would probably be more of an issue there, right?
Any other suggestions? Basically I'm looking for an area that is close to water, trails, and public transportation. Good restaurants and supermarkets or drug stores within walking distance would be great.

I don't know whether or not water taxis run that time of year, but if you want more outdoorsy stuff, I'd consider Bainbridge over Alki. West Seattle is just a neighborhood and is no more outdoorsy than any other city neighborhood. You can take the Bainbridge ferry right into downtown Seattle. There's ample stuff to do on the island and I'm sure if you picked your rental carefully, you could get by without a car just fine. Rent some bikes Bainbridge guide to walking, cycling & paddling

That time of year is fairly miserable, honestly. Cold (all things being relative, it's never freezing in Seattle) and very wet and gray. You can do outdoors stuff, I lived there 25 years so we always hiked, went to the beach, etc in 45 degrees and raining...but if you aren't from there it might be a challenge. It will be lovely and green, green green, even in winter, that's a plus.

If I wanted to use public transportation I would not choose Alki. It's much more difficult to get to than other areas. Bainbridge is better, and probably a good option if your rental is right by the ferry dock.
Taxis are not as readily available as they are in some other cities, although more easy to catch in downtown Seattle than other areas of the city. I highly suggest Uber for getting around, if the bus won't work for where you want to go.
As for the weather, it'll probably be rainy and gray but it could just as easily be sunny that day. You'll never be able to plan for sun so just bring a jacket and enjoy it either way.
What kind of outdoorsy things are you planning? Hikes?

Oh, and Alki beach is great that time of year for beach combing - turning over rocks to check out crabs, etc. One of our favorite activities.
Edmonds might be a good choice for you. It's 20ish minutes north of Seattle but a few nice beaches and it's a quaint town. Restaurants might be a little lacking, though I think they do have a few good/ decent options. It's also easy to get to by train if you want to take a day trip from Seattle. The depot is right in downtown Edmonds and you can basically cross the street to the beaches.
