Wow! Was there an investigation? It seems like it would have been pretty easy to identify the passenger. I'm glad your sister is okay. Oh, yes there was an investigation. There were men in suits at her hospital bed within hours. DS doesn't know the outcome though. She hasn't heard anything.

I was on a flight recently where the passenger next to me handed the flight attendant a bag of wrapped chocolates “for everyone”. I had never seen that before, and thought it seemed strange and dangerous. Your story, Mary_K , is pretty scary. It seems like common sense for flight crews not to accept candy from strangers. It’s one of the first things we learn as kids! I know, right!?!
I told her "Didn't mom & dad teach you this basic rule?
It's scary to think about kids still trick-or-treating!

In the last month or so just read somewhere else about somebody that always brings a small gift for flight attendants. I had never heard of this before and don't plan to start but I am not big on accepting gifts (especially food) from strangers.

A lot of people do this, I find it weird. They are adults, not kids, and quite frankly I wouldn't want someone offering me sugar on my job.

Here's a story for you: My sister is a flight attendant for a small airline. A few months ago, a passenger brought PACKAGED gummi bears on board and offered them to the flight attendants (only 2 FAs) as the passengers were leaving. My sister said that they looked like they were bought from a store. Both flight attendants ate a few. This was their last flight of the day. They hopped into a cab and by the time they got to their hotel, the cab driver had to call an ambulance. The gummis had meth in them. My sis and the other fa were in the hospital 2 days. I told my sister that I can't believe that it's not a rule that you can't accept anything to eat or drink from a passenger. She said she never would again! Mary K 😱

Meth is a horrible horrible drug and some people get addicted after one use. I hope your sister and coworker are doing well.

I wouldn’t bring treats on a plane for the flight attendants, everyone has different dietary restrictions. I must be doing something right by simply smiling, saying hello/good morning, and please and thank you because I haven’t paid for a drink on a flight in years. The last time I flew I ordered a cocktail and then got up to use the restroom, while I was waiting I asked the flight attendant how his day was going and when I came back to my seat I had three airplane bottles of gin on my tray table. It seems like most people treat flight attendants like they are invisible.

I listen to a travel podcast and they recommend this. I agree it’s weird and as a flight attendant I would be suspect.

If someone offered me candy I'd assume they were being thoughtful and I'd accept it in that spirit. I probably would not eat it because it's not worth taking a risk.

Weird. None for the pilots? Even weirder.

That's so scary! Hope she and her fellow FA are OK now.
I'm surprised there isn't a rule about eating food gifts from passengers either.
I'm always super polite and make an effort to be an accommodating passenger. I've never been given free drinks, although I am generally in economy plus/comfort because work pays for my upgrade (drinks are free). :-)

Weird. None for the pilots? Even weirder. The pilots aren’t giving out free booze, so no need to butter them up with chocolates! I have seen passengers in business class and first class give packaged gifts to the cabin crew as they are first seated. Not sure if they are always food gifts though. My BIL is cabin crew with BA, I’ll have to ask him if it’s a frequent occurrence and if he eats any.

My sister is a FA and as such, her husband gets to fly for free or "non rev" . He always brings the FAs a gift of candy or some other treat. He usually gives them small boxes of Godiva and since they know he's a FA's spouse, they gladly accept the gift.

When I first read gummi bears, I was thinking they were the sugarless kind that are notorious for giving you diarrhea if you eat too many but this is much, MUCH worse than that! Wow.
