Just saw A Star is Born. Never been a fan of the dance club/synth/pop/out there/gay icon version of Gaga. Her schtick is too intentionally-provocative-but-weirdly-closed-off for my tastes, and I’m not drawn to most of her musical choices.
But in my stodgy way, I do enjoy her forays into projects that highlight her versatility with vocal styling. And she’s clearly a “real” musician, no matter the musical genre. And not a bad actress.
Anywho, last night I watched a 2017 documentary about her on Netflix called Gaga: Five Foot Two. She comes off as a very genuine person with relatable flaws and insecurities. Highly recommend if only as a humanizing glimpse behind the scenes of superstardom, especially if she’s fresh on your mind from the new film.
(And I’m sure we have some Gaga fans who will set me straight on her image/music. Heh.)

How was the movie? I’m a big fan of the Barbara Streisand version. I’m afraid Bradley won’t live up to Chris Kristofferson in my eyes.

ooh, I so want to see this movie- and find the documentary you mentioned. I've never listened to her 'pop' music, but I've heard a bit of her jazz standard stuff, and her voice is wonderful. I saw her complete interview (almost 30 minutes) on the Stephen Colbert show, and while she sounded a bit out there with some of her notions, she seemed very genuine and mostly down to earth, and is probably a very interesting person.
ETA: all the stuff I heard about the film has made me want to see it even more- she said the music scenes were 'real' in that they actually filmed in public while they were singing, rather than dubbing the music in later; and Sam Elliot and Lady Gaga both said that Bradley Cooper did a great job with the writing and the directing of the movie, as well as with his acting and singing.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I did watch the documentary. I remember feeling sad for her because she just seemed so lonely.

Coincidentally, I just read about how Barbra (maybe she was the producer?) successfully wrested screen time (and lines, closeups) from your Mr. Kristoferson. But the writer thought the emphasis on her character was the truest version of the story because it was actually about the birth of the new star. I enjoyed it. I’m very spoiler averse, but what are you gonna do when you’ve already seen three other versions? LOL. My favorite is still the Judy Garland version, but this is a commendable modern reimagining. (Bradley Cooper was excellent. He trained to play the guitar, sing and even learned to lower the pitch of his speaking voice....measurably.)

I never paid her much attention until I watched that documentary. We listened to the new A Star Is Born soundtrack last night and really enjoyed it. She has an amazing voice and Bradley Cooper is good too.

I am old and I love Lady Gaga. I like all the weird things she does because she is just so talented. Her music is top drawer. I can't wait to see Star is Born, I knew she'd knock it out of the park.
I forgot to add I saw the documentary and it is really good.

to be perfectly honest, I don't think I've ever seen the entire Barbra Streisand version of the movie. Or if I did, I don't remember it. (I do remember reading the Mad Magazine spoof of it, though- lol.) Lady Gaga did say that she met Barbra Streisand before (I think) filming, and kind of got her blessing, and some pointers for the new movie. I may have seen most of the Judy Garland version, and I don't think I've ever seen any of the first version. It would be interesting to watch all of them and do a compare / contrast. (any excuse to watch classic movies, lol.) (and I am NOT trying to derail the thread with this post, I promise! )

Yep, she insisted all music be performed live. No ADR or lip-synching, just like her Super Bowl show. Apparently, they got the venue and crowds by borrowing 15 minutes in the middle of real performers’ concerts, like Willie Nelson. But they turned off the sound, so the crowd was just following directions about reactions.

I'm not sure- was any of it filmed in Arizona? I know Bradley Cooper's character was supposed to be from Arizona; it would be cool to see places I might recognize in the movie.

It’s not a musical and it’s very dated and Old Hollywood. I watched it with my daughter before we went to the new movie. I still enjoyed it but she was Millennial Underwhelmed. My turn to tangent: The only thing I remember about the Barbra Streisand movie is I made mental notes to myself to do all the same decorating as her character when I got my first apartment. All I can remember now is that it was very boho and she had scarves thrown over table lamps. I need to rewatch to see what else my teen self coveted. Probably beads hanging in doorways. (Which I actually still like. LOL.)

I started paying closer attention to Lady Gaga when she sang My Favorite Things on the Oscars a few years back. That was AMAZING! Then I realized she is diverse and wonderful in her musical talents and was worth another look. I think she is awesome. I haven't seen the movie yet, but plan to do so!

i haven't seen the movie but i've seen the trailers. i must say, i have never seen her looking better than when she is just natural like that. i saw a snippet of her on late night TV when she was saying that natural look is not the real her. she prefers the totally dressed up look with the colored hair and lots of make up. that's a shame because i never realized how pretty she was until i saw her just natural.

In the 80’s when my husband and I were just dating, I told him that Barbra Streisand version was one of my favorite movies. He had never seen it so he rented it one night so me and him can watch it together. The other day he asked me when do I want to go out on a date night to see this one. He also has a thing for lady Gaga. I mention that I hoped it was as good as the 70s version and the Judy Garland version. He didn’t know that 70s one was a remake. So I had to explain to him this one was a remake of a remake of a remake of a remake . I don’t know if it’s true or not but I heard that Barbra Streisand wanted Elvis Presley to be in her version but Colonel Parker talked him out of it.

If if I had been diagramming that sentence a million years ago under the stern gaze of a grammar nazi nun, I would have drawn two adjective lines under CONCERTS and none under PERFORMER. Consider yourself my virtual stern nun.

Consider yourself my virtual stern nun. No, silly. As much as I love Willie Nelson, and love him I do, it just makes me giggle to think of Lady Gaga sneaking in to one of his concerts to get a crowd scene. Like she couldn't pull a crowd on her own. The very idea has me sitting here giggling.

I enjoyed the movie and think it's good entertainment. I'd recommend it. But if the award buzz that's been circulating about it actually comes to fruition, I'd be disappointed. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were both good, but not award-worthy IMO.

She has said things like "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap" and "if I hadn't been a woman, I'd have been a drag queen." My favorite is when she was saying she wasn't bothered by dumb blonde jokes because she knows she's not dumb, and she also knows she's not blonde LOL!
