Annabelle said something the other day about how few of us on the board have young kids anymore and it's true, our families have grown up during our years on this board. And I responded to another post this morning from someone who seemed to be filling out the FASFA form for the first time. So it got me wondering how many of us are in this boat right now and how you are handling it?

Me! It's my second kid of two and I am so happy to almost be finished with high school for the last time. Now...ask me again in September how I'm feeling about an empty nest and I may not be quite so happy.

Me! DD still is undecided where she wants to go. She still has one more application to fill out. I'm doing pretty good. She's always gone now anyway with school, work and social life that I already feel like an empty nester.

I do! My oldest We are doing all Early Action so we are in the process of submitting. He is applying to about 10 schools (just got back from our Midwest college tour) - plus the UCs. It’s just been made known that UCSB, UCSD and UCLA over enrolled by quite a bit last year and are anticipating admitting even fewer student this spring...

Our last one will be applying. Bittersweet as I'll be glad that we don't have to do this again, but sad that the last one will be leaving the nest.

we did this last year and it'll be some years before I'm back in that boat as my youngest is only in 6th grade.

I'll answer my own question! My oldest is also applying and he hopes to get into a BFA musical theatre program which means many applications and lots of auditions. He has just about finished the applications (19 MT programs and 3 regular colleges) but he hasn't figured out a safety school yet so he'll have one more application to finish when he decides where that will be. This part has been so crazy that it's been a distraction from the knowledge that he's leaving in 9 months.

Kinda sorta.
DS is a senior. He plans to go to college. He qualifies for a 2 year scholarship at the local community college. Applying there is a formality more than anything since they'll take anyone who has a diploma. We still have to fill out the fasfa, apply to the CC and for the scholarship. As long as we jump through those hoops, he'll be going there for two years tuition free. He wants to transfer to Michigan Tech after that.
DS2 is a junior and qualifies for the same scholarship. He has a different path he wants to take. Two years at the CC, transfer to wmu for their aviation program (which is actually in our city), maybe enter the air Force after that as a pilot.
Given their plans, it'll be about 4-5 years before my house is empty.

Not really, but....
Everything is different as we’re in the UK but my DS is in his second year of uni & is just starting the process of applying for a year abroad next year. Lots of unknowns right now but very exciting.
This time next year we’ll be starting on university applications for dd. Where did the time go?!

Me. So far it’s not too bad. DD’s school is very communicative and gives the kids lots of info, plus they have a required “senior studio” class where they can work on their apps and essays with help from an advisor.
Still working on the FAFSA, which is the hard part for me and DH.

Me too. My only is a senior. I know I need to do this fafsa thing, but damn, I'm dragging my feet. Gotta get moving.
Ds has narrowed it down to 3 schools, all out of state. We didn't see that coming.

My dd is in the midst of college visits & completing applications. She has 2 more colleges to visit and 5 applications to complete. She should have it all done by November 1. She will be a Music Ed major, so she'll have auditions in January. We went through all this last year with my son, but he is a totally different student, so the process was different. At least we already understand the FAFSA, so that should be easier this year. We will then have a break for a few years, my youngest is a freshman.

I am past this stage now but I just wanted to wish all you good luck! It was exciting looking at schools with my boys and seeing how happy they were when they found their right fit. But, at the same time, it was so scary and bittersweet!

DD is a junior and I've asked her about college tours and get the shoulder shrugs or I schedule them and have extracurricular activities conflict.
I think I should have started touring when she was in preschool. LOL She had less going on at that age.

I did FASFA and CSS over the weekend. FASFA was easy and the CSS was annoying but I had gathered all of the information needed ahead of time so it was just time consuming. And those people at FASFA must be smoking crack as far as how they calculate EFC but we were expecting it.

My babies are applying and we still have a few college visits. Senior twins are definitely more work than my singletom was. And now their school has a ridiculously long form I have to fill out for their counselor to do recs. Shouldn’t that be the kid’s job?
It’s gonna be a whirlwind year!

mine just started university in september. it was a bumpy road. she was hoping for mcgill (in quebec) and turned out she missed an intent letter so was automatically disqualified for not supplying all the required documents (as she should be, but she was devastated... we kept checking her application in the spring and it didn't say anything was outstanding... but that is life, right?). she got into an excellent program that allows her to stay here... and she admits she was unsure about moving out of province but would have like to have had the option. sometimes things happen for a reason.
we are starting "choices for 9" for high school options for her brother. all so weird for me... i grew up in a town that had ONE high school. everyone went, no specialty program or options - did make it easier!!

My son is a senior. He's stressed out right now with the pressure to find the perfect school. I keep telling him there's no perfect school and he can succeed at any number of different schools but...he's seventeen. He doesn't believe a word I say!

We are! This is my second (and last) one to have college applications and I am finding its harder than I expected. All of our applications are done - he ended up applying to 2 public Texas schools, 2 private Texas schools, 2 of out state - one public and one private that is a reach.
On top of college admittence letters, we are waiting on his chosen major approval as well.

That is all in my rear view mirror. My youngest is a senior in college. It doesn’t seem that long ago we were immersed in it. Best wishes to all of you. You’ll get through it, one step at a time, and your kids will end up at just the right place. Try not to worry!

Yes we too are in the process. I’ve already finished the FAFSA and CSS. The CSS is a pain.
We are in California so lots of competition for the various schools. So different than in my day. My child’s major has a 7% acceptance rate at many of the schools which is discouraging.
So many essays for him to write as well as creative supplements. I will be glad when he is done and it’s just school work and music to juggle.

My DS is a high school senior. Our DD is a junior in college, so it seems like we just went through this.
DS wants to be a film maker and is looking at several well known schools. We are getting sticker shock at some of the price tags.
While I would love for him to be able to go to one of his dream schools (CalArts, NYU, UT Austin), those are most likely financially out of reach.
I am just glad that he is practical enough to not want to leave college owing the equivalent of a new car, or in some cases, a house.
We have gone on 2 campus tours so far and that will probably be all until we see where he is accepted. I have a friend who has seriously taken her daughter to close to a dozen schools that are on her "short list". That's not very short, LOL.

The CSS Profile is another financial aid application that some private schools require. They go much deeper into your finances than the FAFSA including home market value, retirement accounts, income projections. It’s a pain. Sarah*H and Marina what is CSS. I haven't heard this term. This crap is stressing me out so much that I feel like putting my fingers in my ears and just la la laing.

It's another racket owned and run by the College Board. I think it stands for College Scholarship Service. Not all schools require it, you'll need to check with each school your child is applying to - only about half of DS' schools wanted it. It costs $16 to be sent to each school. It asks for much more in depth financial information - retirement and investment accounts, other property, HSA accounts, etc. And then each school can have its own supplemental questions for you to answer. One of DS' schools wanted to know about potential inheritances.
ETA: Marina's answer was nicer than mine. I'm not a fan of the College Board.

Me. Oldest. He’s been out of school over a month because of Hurricane Florence and won’t be back until mid Nov at the earliest, so we at least have time and have been doing some college visits. It’s grueling to say the least...
