Marina and Sarah*H, so is it only for private schools? If ds pulls up a school that needs the CSS, I think I'll have him steer clear. Thank you for your answers.

I have one in first year university and one in grade 11. While my oldest was a bit laissez-faire about the whole process, my youngest has known what he has wanted since the beginning of grade 9 and is going at it with a laser-like focus. We've already visited his first-choice university and he's been spending the last week looking over scholarship applications.

My DD needs to apply. She’s going to our local community college, so it’ll be easy. It’s a great college that has agreements with all of our state schools and most of the private schools in our state, as long as students finish the 2 year AA program, all classes transfer to the 4 year school.

My youngest has hopes of attending a conservatory and I’m petrified both at the thought of the audition process and the cost if she gets in.

He was in a vocal music programme in high school so probably me you were thinking of. He's studying Software Engineering in university. He's still working with children's choirs, though.

Marina, thank you thank you. That list is hugely helpful. I saw a couple of schools ds has expressed an interest in, but none of his top 5 choices. Guess I better start paying closer attention.

We will be focusing on the last driver's license (#3) and the last Eagle project (#2).

Me! My DD is a HS senior she hasn’t applied anywhere yet as she is taking the SAT again Nov 3.
I have a question regarding that. Should she go ahead and apply to the schools she knows she wants to and then send the scores after her test? Or wait until she gets her scores back? They haven’t been real clear with that. DD thinks she needs to wait.

Good luck to all of you, and your seniors. My oldest is a high school sophomore so I'm reading this thread and thinking about the future.

My DS is a high school senior. Our DD is a junior in college, so it seems like we just went through this. DS wants to be a film maker and is looking at several well known schools. We are getting sticker shock at some of the price tags. While I would love for him to be able to go to one of his dream schools (CalArts, NYU, UT Austin), those are most likely financially out of reach. I am just glad that he is practical enough to not want to leave college owing the equivalent of a new car, or in some cases, a house. We have gone on 2 campus tours so far and that will probably be all until we see where he is accepted. I have a friend who has seriously taken her daughter to close to a dozen schools that are on her "short list". That's not very short, LOL. Depending on your EFC, NYU might not be out of reach. I know kids who are paying 20 or 30K (still a considerable sum, I know), but it's not the whole 80K enchilada. They are generous with the kids who need it. And under represented minorities.

My oldest is applying this year. It’s so stressful! She has no clue on where she wants to go. She wants to go to a specific one, but it is incredibly competitive so i think she should be ready for a no and have a list of options. She refuses to do so.

Best of luck to all the pea parents. We're still in the investigation/testing stage and it's stressful enough!

In 2 more years we will be. Dd is a sophmore. But thankfully she is starting at a Jr College! So no stress over acceptance and denial notices.

Good luck to those of you in the thick of the application process now. Our youngest is now a college freshman so we're done with this whole process (thank goodness!)...unless DS wants to go to grad school, but then it'll be on him at least. And it'll be a few years down the road. He's also looking into study abroad programs for a semester in his sophomore or junior year, but he's taking on the research and everything himself so far.
Good luck, and try to take some time to step back and enjoy it because senior year flies by (although it doesn't seem that way when they're waiting on acceptance letters, financial aid, and/or test scores) and then they're gone! Kinda glad my youngest ended up going somewhere sort of close to home. :-)

My beautiful DS is applying. Pushing the button on the Common App tomorrow.
He has 10 schools. None in our state. All east of the Mississippi.

She can apply and submit the scores after they are available. Unless it is a self-report school, the College Board sends them so it's separate from the application process anyway.

Mine are in 8th and 10th, so it will be next year for me. How did he grow up so quickly? He knows what he wants to do (Archeology), so it is just fine tuning his major so it will be more broad for his job search after. He has already been looking into colleges, but no visits until next year.

Me! Second child is a senior in HS. We just did the FAFSA last week and will apply to his desired schools soon. The OP mentioned how many of us don't have young children anymore--I've got both older and younger. Oldest two are 19 and 17, younger two are 10 and 7. So after this second child, I'll have a number of years before I have to do the college application thing again. Merilee

I have a junior but have a question for all of you. At our high school the kids take the SAT and ACT in the spring. If they want to retake it, would it beneficial to take it in August/September before submitting college applications?

Do go to the university sites and run through their calculators. Often the private schools will give substantial scholarships. I have also been told that at the private school you can negotiate the price with them. Some are willing to do this to increase admissions. Some will not negotiate. And I have breen told not to be afraid to walk away if you don't like the price. They may come back and give you what you are asking.

Ods has applied as a transfer student for spring. He's debating between 2 schools that accepted him. I joined this board when I was on bedrest w/yds who is almost a junior in college.

My youngest nephew got through the entire process and just finished his masters at a music school. His bachelors was done at a conservatory and now he's a violinist in a big symphony. It can be done with lots of hard work, sweat and money.
