I used flickr a little bit years ago, but then it sat and collected dust until I rediscovered it 3 months ago when I started posting for the 2 peas gallery.
I found it a great way to get select pictures from my iphone to my computer, and liked that it was acting as photo backup for my iphone pictures.
The new flickr update: *Free members with more than 1,000 photos or videos uploaded to Flickr have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Pro or download content over the limit. After January 8, 2019, members over the limit will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. After February 5, 2019, free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos or videos will have content actively deleted -- starting from oldest to newest date uploaded -- to meet the new limit.
Under the old system, I was only at 1% of the allowed uploads, but I have over 3000 photos! Cutting back to 1000 will be harsh. I'm now thinking Amazon Prime will be getting my money just for the photo storage.

Oh bummer! I've just started to use it more for my scrapbooking pages too. I don't think I'm over 1000 photos yet though but there is a big difference between that and 1TB.
I've just signed up for Google photos additional storage which is like 1.50 a month so I will stick with that for my backups.

We all knew this was coming when Flickr was sold to SmugMug. Their offer didn't align with Flickr's wonderful free offer. They were all "Nothing is changing at the moment" but the discussions on Reddit and elsewhere all pointed to people saying this was going to be another one down the drain. It'll become an even more pro photographer-exclusive space. Ugh.
I'll be deleting most photos on there, including what I've posted on 2Peas. Such a shame. I've been using Flickr since... 2007?

That sucks. I've been using Flickr to back up all my photos for a few years now. I have over 8000 photos there. I also have Google Photos which is free, and I've started paying for Forever. I think I will just use Flickr for 2 peas and my Layout a Day groups and use my other back ups instead. Even with 8000 photos I was still at less than 2% of their 1TB storage. That is a lot of deleting. Sigh. At least I have them backed up elsewhere and I don't have to download all of them.

That sucks. I use Dropbox and the cloud as well so I guess that’s it for Flickr.

Well, pooh! I suppose that means eventually all the posts where we've shared our creations will look odd with those Image Not Found graphics.

This is not good. I usually use google for cloud space, but ran out of room and was too cheap to pay for extra storage, so I just uploaded 1200 photos to flikr this week and was planning to upload more. I guess I better stop being a cheap ass and just buy more storage lol
I didn't know they were bought by SmugMug since I just started using it when I started posting to the gallery. I will use it for that, but not anything else now

For those that use Google - it's entirely possible to open another account with a different email address and get more free storage. In Firefox it's possible to switch between them without signing in and out - at least it is on the desktop!

I haven't used flickr much in the past decade but ages ago I had a Pro account and then they changed it so that everyone could have tons of photos on there and they were encouraging everyone to upload everything (I didn't but only because I had bandwidth issues and it was taking too long). And now I guess they're going back the other way... Annoying.
Thanks for posting this info though. I hadn't heard. I'm sure it went to my yahoo account which I had to get to get Flickr - but it's just for that and (I assume) a mountain of spam.

If you log into your different profiles on chrome it is easy to switch in-between Google accounts. I have 3 and frequently will have all three open in their respective chrome windows. I love it because I use each email address for different things (volunteer positions) and can tailor the bookmark bar for each account.

But is google photo part of google plus which will be going away? If not, is it easy to upload a google photo into proform boards? Thanks kitbop for letting us know. Does this affect the groups as well? I would assume yes. admin I uploaded some photos as a backup while on various outings and never did anything with them, so now I have over 3000 photos to get rid of or they'll get rid of my layouts. boo. The sad thing is that they don't have an easy way to delete that I see. You have to go into each photo! I may just download everything to a file and let them delete. Or I may bite the bullet and pay the $50.

If you go into your camera roll, you simply click on the thumbnails (as many as you want) and then delete as a batch. It's fairly quick... I am making sure I'm starting to download my photos too. But I need to figure out another online storage place. Thanks JaneB for the multi-account idea. I may take some advantage of that. And I'm going to look at the Google one too. But Amazon seems like good bang-for-your-buck given that the prime membership does have extra benefits?

I took advantage of the lower price for the first year...30% off, I think. I hate paying for storage but like Flikr and don't want to start from scratch somewhere else. I'll definitely revisit that decision when my first year is up, but right now, to me, it was the lesser of two evils . We're getting ready to buy a house, and photo storage stress is going to have to wait .

It is not part of Google plus. I don't use it to share photos here so I can't answer that sorry.

I used Pinterest to keep photos of my pages. It's easy to post them here from there. I do have them in a private folder so no one else can see them.

I have been using smugmug for four years now. I really like the service and I don't think that it is that expensive. I got tired of putting my photos here there and everywhere so I just dished out the money.
For those of you considering purchasing photo storage space, I would give smugmug a look.

Does this affect the groups as well? I would assume yes. admin They don't mention groups, so I would guess they are not directly affected, but that's not 100% clear. It does clearly mean that any images in the gallery/group removed as part of the down-sizing for free members would disappear.

I deleted a lot. I had 8000 pics and now I have 500. I basically left crafty ones and ones I had shared somewhere. I have everything in Google Photos and I'm slowly moving things to Forever.

Is there a way to batch delete from the flikr website? I deleted most everything from the flikr app on my phone, but it's not syncing with the website and still showing I have 1300 photos there. I really don't want to delete those one at a time and it will be my 2peas gallery that goes if I let them do it in January.

On the website, you can click select all for a given day and then hit delete. I selected all and then deselected my scrappages. It still took a while but was faster than my phone. I’m not sure if there’s an even faster way.

I was surprised to see how many photos I had on there - 1200. I think i shall keep it for my scrapbooking pages and craft photos, which of course are some of the oldest, so i shall have to go through and sort them all now.

Thanks justjac ! I just tried that, it's not super fast, but it will work for sure. There's an option to work in their Organizr or whatever they call it to "batch edit" groups of photos. I'm currently loading the 2200 photos in my "auto upload" album that I didn't remember I had! Ages ago they had loosened things up so much they offered an option to auto-upload all your phone pix, which I thought would be a good extra backup. But it took foreeeeever and so I gave up. And apparently forgot to check if anything had uploaded and what settings might be on that album. DOH! I just got the notice that uploading is suspended until I start deleting under their limit, which I didn't think I was anywhere near, so I hadn't even worried about. Nope. Since I didn't even know I had this "backup" album the rational thing would be to delete it without a second thought. But I don't know if I'm that rational! Ugh.

Oh man! I have another 5000 photos to delete... I had no idea how much stuff I had ended up putting on Flickr over the years.
Getting familiar with how to batch organize and edit again...
revisiting pictures of my 9 yo nephew when he was only a few hours old... and then deleting them! eeek. (I have them all saved, I have them all saved...)

I got a reminder about the new limit last week so deleted around 4K photos to bring it under the 1k limit. Annoying but at least it’s done now. I think I’ll just use Flickr for the few crafty pics I want to share in the gallery here. I already pay for extra Dropbox and ICloud storage so am not going to pay for Flickr Premium as well!

That's how I spent my day yesterday after they said I couldn't upload any more until I went pro. The same number too! 4000 photos... I got very frustrated with the Organize function... I left my crafty photos, some new, some very old! and a random album of old photos that I probably don't need. I'll probably go back and delete everything that isn't shared here.
