16 years later that $125 machine is now the equivalent of a machine in the $300-500 range. Also, from my own experience (and that of others here), a Singer today is not the same quality of the Singers of old. It has nothing to do with being 'ridiculous' but rather having the experience and sharing that. Poor quality machines are one of the top reasons that people give up on sewing. sorry but that is just not true. It was the cheapest machine when she bought it, she got me the cheapest one because she didn't believe I'd actually use it and she didn't want to waste her money. There were definitely more expensive options. And like I said, I bought my neice a $90 brother machine over the summer and when I used it I was jealous because it's way nicer/smoother/easier to use than mine. And her and my sister have since started a company selling their home sewn goods using that machine. It's ridiculous to act like the barrier to entry to start sewing is a $300+ machine. No one is saying this at all. The OP stated that her DIL already has some sewing experience so she isn’t just starting. For someone like that, I would worry that she would outgrow a very basic entry level machine fairly quickly if she isn’t already beyond the beginner level now. FWIW, I started sewing on a machine at five years old. Was making my own simple clothes by the time I was 7-8. By the time I was 14 I was taking advanced sewing classes with my older sister. It’s hard to know what would be the best fit without knowing exactly how experienced the recipient is and how motivated they are to advance. I probably wouldn’t *buy* a $300 machine for my 8 year old DD who has never sewed, but I would show her how to use my 40+ year old Bernina.

**GypsyGirl** you can adopt me and I will happily take your machines...and send you pictures of cute kids wearing the clothes I make on them! That's more than I can say for certain family members! I recently send a gorgeous quilt, doll quilt and pillow to a nephew's 1 year old. All I got was a Facebook thank you and not a single photo so far in the 2+ months they've had it. I could use some more appreciative relatives! The beauty of my stash is that there is more than enough for you and craftedbys to share! I'm convinced that most non-crafters just don't get the value of handmade. I have made a number of things for my nieces and my sister in laws don't get it at all. I get a passing thanks and that is it. My daughter, on the other hand, comes home from school asking for dresses for every little thing they are doing at school. The most recent was an outfit in pink material that had octopi on it. Because she was going to be a pink octopus in her class music presentation and they were supposed to wear something the same color as their costume. I'm working with my mother in law to make Christmas PJs for all 10 grandkids, she loves getting them matching ones but that is hard now that the ages are 9 mos - 14 years. So I offered to make matching ones. It took 2 months, and my mother in law going off at them over Thanksgiving, for them to get me the measurements for their kids. Now I am scrambling to get them done by the time we leave on Sunday. I am in awe of quilters, I hope to someday learn. I can sew clothes, but the fidlyness of quilts scares me!

You are either crazy or a saint! If you can sew pjs, you can sew a quilt. It's mostly just straight seams. Next year, check out Kohl's. They have links for family pjs, including even the dog! Be sure to post some photos. Good luck getting it all done!
