Here's the thing I did. It's just in pencil so I edited it a bit to make it more visible. I'm not sure if I'll finish it up with pen or not. I don't have anywhere to put it - my project is all in my Day One journal. OLW WIP by jo.blackford, on Flickr I love this! Going to file it away for next year. This would probably be a good alternative for me to try. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks I think the purpose of the Feb prompt is to get a little more visual, and I did do some image searches to find visual representations of my word which I added to my Pinterest board. But I decided not to spend a lot of time printing them out and trying to make a vision board since I don't really have a place for that in my space/project. Ideally I should probably have done more doodles or sketches as part of what I did, and maybe I still will. I'm planning to do some kind of drawing practice soon, so I might add more pictorial elements to the thing I already started. I did read recently that drawing a word or thing will help you remember it more, so I think there's value in getting out a pen or pencil and doodling, especially if the collage thing doesn't appeal. It's a lot more portable and less messy too.

I have done a big old nothing craft or prompt wise with my word yet! But at least I am focused on it and using it in my day to day life. Last year I definitely was more on target with keeping up monthly.

I was flipping through my 2015 album and discovered some OLW stuff I quite liked, in retrospect. I'm going to take a closer look and see which aspects I enjoy more and try to work that into what I'm doing this year. But that was the first and last time I did a vision board, so I figured I'd post it here. My word was light but I was also thinking about yes, which became my word the following year. It's the front and back of a letter sized page, mostly cut from catalogs. 2015 OLW by jo.blackford, on Flickr OLW 2015 by jo.blackford, on Flickr

I love your graphical representation of your word, joblackford . I am not participating in OLW, but I was inspired by your plan, and decided to create a page with some of the words and phrases that speak to me. Our challenge for today for 28-4-28 was to respond to the word INSPIRE. Here is the page I came up with: embrace imperfection by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

love it grammadee! Is the "embrace imperfection" an alpha sticker or did you fussy cut those? joblackford I love your collages! I need to do this, hopefully tonight because the month is nearly over... my plan is to do something similar to the collages you did in a previous year. I love your word art also though, it really reminds me of the monthly word art in the get to work book.

Welcome to March March is all about staying on track because this seems to be the month that most people “fall off the wagon” in keeping up with their project. Prompt 1: Revisit your purposeOne way to stick with a long term project once it’s lost that exciting “newness” is to revisit why you started the project in the first place. Some ideas to avoid forgetting this project: + review your prompts for Jan & Feb, fill in any gaps you might be missing and reflect on what you wrote/made + review your progress towards your goals. No need for a huge check-in, but I find it helpful to do a monthly check in and make sure you are on track and if not, change your approach/expectations + check in on the community (here, Ali’s class, facebook, etc., where ever you are participating), it helps to keep you accountable if you publicly celebrate your progress/set your goals for the upcoming month + set aside time in your schedule to work on your project. Look at your schedule for the upcoming month and see if there is a place that you can calendar in an hour to devote to working on your project. Once you calendar it in, stick with it and treat it like any other scheduled appointment. Prompt 2: Check in on last month’s goals/set next month’s goalsHave you made progress towards your annual goals? Did you stick with your February goals? What are some things related to your word that you specifically want to focus on in March? How do you plan to make that happen? Prompt 3: Check in on your daily practice/start a new daily practice for March How did you do on your daily practice? What worked/what didn’t? Identify patterns. Is this something you will continue in March? Is there a different daily practice you want to work on? What can you do to be more successful this month? Prompt 4: Take a monthly self-portraitI am following along in the OLW journal so I plan to include this prompt each month. Prompt 5: Consider Companion Words
We're a couple months into the year now, your word has probably lost that "new" feel and you're getting comfortable with it. Over the past few months have any companion words spoken to you? What are they? How do they relate to your main word? How have they affected your progress? ____ Reminder to those participating: quietgirl needtime2scrap @missbellejane lovinlife oaksong mom Chinagirl828 cbscrapper joblackford amidwestkingdom katyscrap nana2callie travelsoul maryjo mmagain scrappinmama prettyprettypaper linda argirl08 thewanderingcreative elegantsufficiency angiew teacherlisa shinyhappytina mrssch mamakven cindytred Citygirl nancydrew breetheflea If you don't want to be tagged each month or if I didn't tag you but you want to be tagged, just send me a PM and I will add/remove you accordingly.

lasteve1 thanks for the tag. I would indeed fall off the wagon were it not for the monthly nudge to keep me thinking! My RESILIENCE OLW was particularly apt this last month as I was approached, invited and pampered by a media company for a potentially exciting project which ultimately came to nought as they telephoned to say "on this occasion we've gone with the other person". A few years ago I'd have taken the rejection personally, but age has advantages as far as RESILIENCE is concerned and I was able to shrug my shoulders and move on. I had recorded the events in my PL but hadn't actually linked it to OLW - but thanks for the prompt, I have another page to add to my journal and a useful reminder of how we never stop learning and growing

I am using the 31 days chart from OLW this month and my habit I am tracking is to wean myself off coke and extra caffeine. We're three days in, and I already messed up by drinking coke yesterday. So I am shifting my thinking. Instead of 31 days of no coke. I am going to think of it as 31 days of LESS coke with the hope boy day 31 I will have more days of no coke than days with coke.

I hope it is okay that I am jumping in 2 months late for OLW. So inspired by all of you. I choose a word every year and reflect on it and have started AE’s OLW class and failed 3 times. I have all the products from last year and other years still. Some used a little so a I will use those. I always give up in March so maybe starting a March will be better. 😉 What is your word for 2019? LOVE Why did you choose that word? I need to learn to love others more and myself included. I tend to hold grudges sometimes and get aggravated big time with family (oldest of 7). I need to learn to give grace when needed and Show more love and understanding. Are you participating in Ali's class or another class/program on the internet to help you with your OLW? I have a few classes, including last years- so may use last years prompts a little, but I like lasteve1 prompts here and may use those instead. How are you planning to document your word? In my OLW album Is this your first time participating in OLW? Nope. Been choosing a word each year for many many years. If you've participated before, what were your previous words & how was your experience with the project? JOY 2x, Faith, Balance... lasteve1 - could you please tag me each month too? Thank you for this tread!

I finally got to making my vision board yesterday. I ended up putting it straight into the OLW journal covering one of the prompts for March that I knew I would never do. This year instead of just focusing on words/photos that stood out to me, I also considered a color scheme and I like the end result more because of this. For March I am not really doing anything new, except finishing up the February prompts in the OLW journal that I didn't get to last month. I started a daily practice sheet at the beginning of the year and am continuing it through March so I don't want to pick something new to do also. My daily practice is to try to hit my fitbit steps goal. I have not done very well so far, in fact I only have 14 days so far this year. I like seeing them on the chart though and I think seeing the huge gaps is motivating to get out and walk. I think it will be a lot easier when it's not winter and snowy!! elegantsufficiency it sounds like you have the perfect word for you this year! Hopefully another opportunity will present itself soon. amidwestkingdom I think having an at home photo printer is a game changer, hopefully you're able to put it to good use soon. mom I've tried to quit drinking coke before, my husband also. I was successful for a couple of years until I started drinking it again, and now I drink diet and am okay with my intake. My husband has recently quit again. We've both found its easiest to quit if you replace it with another beverage. For me, I enjoy the fizziness, so I drink seltzer if I want to cut back. My husband enjoys the sweetness, so he drinks crystal light. I think aiming for less coke is definitely a great goal, it's hard to cut something like that out cold turkey! justlisa7 of course it's fine to jump in at any time! Welcome and I hope that you can stick with us through the year. I added you to the list to be tagged in the future.

Welcome to April Welcome to April! Sorry I’m a day late with this post but it’s been a little crazy around here lately. All the more reason I need this project! Prompt 1: Companion WordsWhile focusing on my chosen word for the year, there are often “companion words” that pop up to work alongside my main word. + Do you have any companion words? What are they? + How are these words coming up in your life? + How do they relate to your main word? Prompt 2: 100 Day ProjectMany of us are embarking on a 100 Day Project beginning this month and continuing for 100 days. If you haven’t heard of this project, there is another thread all about it here. Even if you aren’t participating in the 100 Day Project, there are going to be smaller projects that come along during the year and overlap with your progress with your OLW. Because of this, I find that it’s easiest to stay committed to my OLW if I connect the two. If you are participating in the project— + How does your planned project align with your One Little Word goals? + How can your word help you commit to 100 Days of action? + If the two projects don’t seem to mesh, is there a reason? Have you drifted away from your word? Whether you are participating in the 100 Days Project or not— + Are there other smaller projects you have worked on this year? + How has your word shown up in these projects? + Are there any specific projects you intend to accomplish this month? + How can your word help you plan for these projects? Prompt 3: Check in on your daily practice/start a new daily practice for April + How did you do on your daily practice last month? + What worked/what didn’t? Identify patterns. + Is this something you will continue in April? Is there a different daily practice you want to work on? + What can you do to be more successful this month? Prompt 4: Take a monthly self-portraitI am following along in the OLW journal so I plan to include this prompt each month. —— Reminder to those participating: quietgirl needtime2scrap @missbellejane lovinlife oaksong mom Chinagirl828 cbscrapper joblackford amidwestkingdom katyscrap nana2callie travelsoul maryjo mmagain scrappinmama prettyprettypaper linda argirl08 thewanderingcreative elegantsufficiency angiew teacherlisa shinyhappytina mrssch mamakven cindytred Citygirl nancydrew breetheflea justlisa7 If you don't want to be tagged each month or if I didn't tag you but you want to be tagged, just send me a PM and I will add/remove you accordingly.

I am still chugging along. I did my 31 day of practice last month - I went 29 days without a coke. the first few days were rough, but I no longer even think about them so its been a win!
Still looking for my word in everyday life (the word is discover). I'm discovering things I didn't expect or want to (how to help a wayward son). But I am making it. Haven't checked Ali's prompt this month but I will.

Oh wow, after my trip last month the OLW project just disappeared from my mind. But my words haven't, so that's good.
I'm doing a very simple 100 day project that relates to my words (deep and thrift) by practicing drawing cute characters that I hope can form the basis of a new line/opportunity for my business and potentially save money and make money. If that doesn't work out (and it's a long term goal that I might decide isn't actually the direction I want to go with my work) it still fits in with my main word because it's using what I have (a notebook, pencil and a marker) to go deeper into a skill I tend to shy away from when it gets difficult. Doing it for 100 days will hopefully help me push past the point where it stops being fun and starts being difficult to develop a deeper level of drawing skill.
On the topic of thrift - I'm also still fighting my brain to stop wanting an iPad to solve all my problems. Between the very expensive trip we took (mostly based on my SIL's priorities) and some unpleasant medical bills coming up the last thing I need is another gadget (that isn't going to magically turn me into a digital artist anyway). I also forgot about thrift when I realized all my shorts are too big for me this year. I ordered 10 pairs to try on from Nordies, but I'm not sure if I want any of them to work because I know I should've tried to thrift them first. But then again, 2 really good pairs that fit would be such a nice treat to last me all summer.
Anyway... thanks for the reminder tag! I should copy this nonsense ^^ into my journal.

That sounds great joblackford - how was the trip though?! Hope it all went according to plan! Totally fallen off the wagon when it comes to OLW, though whenever I come across my word RESILIENCE I get a little buzz and a shot of renewed vigour. I guess that's all part of the benefits of homing in on a single word focus? Anyway, it wasn't so much my own resilience I focused on this month but that of a couple of my (adult) students, who were so quickly disheartened by a lack of instant success in an assignment that I questioned my judgements. Was I too harsh? (no, I had applied the same standard answer framework to everyone) or did I use ill-chosen words and phrases? I read through again and had chosen my words very carefully and left plenty of encouragement too. Hmmm. Food for thought - and maybe a test of my own resilience in sticking to my guns!?

elegantsufficiency the trip went well, I think. We had an exhausting schedule, exploring Tokyo and Kyoto, Tokyo DisneySea, and Universal Studios Japan in 6 days. It was non-stop. My Fitbit said we walked 135k steps (about 55 miles) and it was pretty much a whirlwind. My BIL got a bad cold halfway through and we caught it by the last day so we've been coughing and miserable for the last couple of weeks, which just makes it feel even more like it didn't really happen. I have lots of cool pictures and notes and it was really interesting to see how things have changed in the last 20 years (in some ways, a lot, in others, not much). My nephew (9) had a good time for the most part even though he's never walked around like that before. I'm the only one acclimated to public transit so everyone else was suffering! lol. My special skills are very special... (I rambled a bit in the GS crop thread about the trip and how social media comparison started to invade my brain and mess with my chill. TherapistBooty gave lots of good advice). Resilience is an interesting word because it's usually most evident when everything goes to hell, which is not something I would wish for you. I guess lots of little things go wrong in everyday life that call on our resilience, and it's a most excellent skill/trait to have. Perhaps the most useful thing. What was your thinking in choosing it, if you don't mind sharing?

Post by elegantsufficiency on Apr 3, 2019 22:05:42 GMT
What was your thinking in choosing it, if you don't mind sharing? First things first - I'll go and find the thread with the social media convo - that sounds fascinating! Your trip sounds exhausting though - no wonder you succumbed to that cold I chose resilience because I'm aware of how fragile we all seem to becoming - evidenced I suppose by the events I described above. I suppose I don't want to succumb to that myself - I am stronger than that and intend to stay so. As I get older though, I realise that I don't get quite the same opportunities as I did and when something opens up, I want to feel able to give it a go and not feel fearful of failure. In January, an exciting offer (TV-related) did present itself and for a while, I progressed through various stages of selection before hearing, after the final "test" that they chose to go with the other person. I was pretty relaxed about it, because it came out of the blue and wasn't something I'd gone looking for, though I guess that's the kind of outcome that might put me off accepting the chance to do something similar again. Chatting to the young production guy, I was interested to hear him say how thick skinned TV people have to be, because they face rejection so frequently - he hoped to become a presenter himself and had several irons in the fire at any one time, knowing that it might be one in a hundred or more that might result in something. Since I chose the word, I think I've realised that simply recognising my resilience has given me enough of a boost to give something another shot - or move on and forget about it. Yes you're right, life is indeed challenging, whether it's just about dealing with the awful traffic, forgetting to buy milk or something more serious and personal. I don't want to be the kind of person who crumbles at the first hint of trouble, but the one who rises above it and gets on with life. I hadn't thought of it till now, but this mornings "message from the Universe" (one of those daily email inspiration things) went like this: "The reason you sometimes find life hard, people difficult, or circumstances challenging, Gill, is because in each of those areas you signed up for the advanced course." Hah! Who knew!?

Post by joblackford on Apr 5, 2019 1:15:20 GMT
simply recognising my resilience I love that. Recognising how you already have the thing you need is so valuable. Seeing how it works in your life already and where you might be able to cultivate it more... good stuff. I don't want to be a person who falls apart if things don't go my way either. Especially the little stuff. I think we often have far more strength than we would expect when the big stuff goes wrong, but I don't want to be the person who can't enjoy an outing because it's raining and I brought the wrong coat, or who gets hung up on small setbacks. It's a great word. I love the "advanced course" thing - I always note that the "universe" sent my friend the most strong willed kid and dog, and always seems to be pitting her against these whirlwinds of headstrong energy. I guess she got an advanced course is flexibility or something... btw I once heard that Buddhist monks often get named a virtue, like patience or calm. Turns out (much to the monk Patience's dismay) that it's given to them as a reminder of what they most need to work on, not as a mark of their strength. Every time someone talks to them they get a reminder "Patience, come over here! Patience, what are you doing?" lol.

Welcome to May Welcome to May! I’m a couple days behind but things have been crazy around here… hopefully they settle down in June and I get back on track with this project. Prompt 1: PhotographyThis month a lot of us are going to be participating in week in the life, so this is a good month to focus on photography and using photos to document your word. Look back through your photos so far this year and choose 8-10 that show your progress with your word. Why did you choose them? Spend a few days, or even a week, this month looking for your word in your life and photographing it. Consider doing a photo-a-day that represents your word Prompt 2: Three ThingsList out three things you love about your word List out three things that are challenging you about your word Reflect on your progress so far with your word and if you have made progress towards your goals Prompt 3: Check in on your daily practice/start a new daily practice for May How did you do on your daily practice last month? What worked/what didn’t? Identify patterns. Is this something you will continue in April? Is there a different daily practice you want to work on? What can you do to be more successful this month? I'm finding a connection with one of my words (deep) this month through the 100 day project. I've been drawing every day and sharing on IG Stories and it's been fine. But we're a little more than a month into it and I'm starting to get restless. I'm starting to think about changing it up, doing it a different way, maybe needing a new notebook for it (despite not even being halfway through the notebook I have). All the squirrely feelings I get when I'm bored with something and get some relief by setting it aside or changing it. The idea behind the depth project was to ignore those feelings and just keep going.
I haven't mastered drawing yet - not even close! And I also haven't failed at it either. I'm OK at it, and I enjoy it somewhat, but I'm still only doing the bare minimum each day - I haven't suddenly fallen in love with illustrating. I have also become a little less enamored by the idea of creating my own supplies by drawing, and the urgent "need" for an iPad has settled into an occasional niggling want.
But in my cardmaking I'm also realizing how many cards I could be making with the supplies I already have on hand. And they could be good cards too. I know I could be making really beautiful cards with the supplies I have - I just need to devote some time and energy to using what I've got instead of wishing I had something else (an expensive gadget and talent and passion I'm not sure I have.)
So I'm glad I decided to do the 100 day project... and I think my OLW "theme" for this month will be exploring this discomfort I'm having and committing to pushing through it to see what's on the other side. Is anyone else seeing their word more clearly in relation to another project they're doing?

Making a embarrassing confession here...I hate my word that I chose. I really thought it made sense for what I hoped and planned for this year and ugh! It's become a hard no, can't even stand it. My word was intention and I feel like every time I hear it or come across it lately, I'm reminded again that it feels like I failed.
We are 6 months in and I think I'm changing my word for the rest of this year. I'm finding the word TRY has been coming to me lots, whether in my self talk, relationships, just about everything. So for the second half of 2019 my word is TRY.
