Nope. Trained mine to stay off with a spray bottle. There's plenty of other places for him to hang out....

I've had cats for 17 years and I've never caught one on the counter. My old cats never got on the table either. But my new cats do. So I put a tablecloth on the table for them to lay on and I pull it off and wipe the table before eating.

We didn't let them on the counter, but I had one who was doing it a lot and one who was occasional. I laid some aluminum foil on the counter. My occasional counter jumper did it once and then was never on the counter again, and my habitual took about three times and then he stopped as well. For some reason, they were never really interested in the table.

When I had cats, I'd clean the counters before I used them. I never knew if they had jumped up or not while I wasn't around.
We have a newscaster who shows early morning pictures of his three cats every morning. One is on the table, one on the counter and one in front of the fridge. I think he put something down on the surfaces once he started posting. People may have commented on that.

Am I the oddball who finds this repulsive? I am admittedly not a cat person, but I wouldn't let my beloved dog on the eating/cooking surfaces either. No you are not an oddball. I would not eat at or from a household that let their animals walk across counters or tables. I would not let my dog do that kind of stuff either.

We have 3 cats and right now only one jumps on the counter and it's only when she wants treats. She never does it when we cook or making a meal. We have a kitten and she is always on the table. We are working on keeping her off, but so far she hasn't done it when we are eating there, but loves to jump and and investigate if we are doing anything else there, like playing board games. Our 3rd cat only lays on the chairs to sleep.

In the 25 years we’ve had cats, we’ve managed to train them to stay off the counters and tables. At least when we are within viewing distance. However, when we got a kitten 3 years ago, all rules fell to the wayside. Although she doesn’t jump up while cooking or when we’re at the table eating, there is not way we have found to keep her down. She loves water, so spraying doesn’t work. Not much scares her, so foil had no effect. Short of covering the surfaces with bitter apple spray or oranges peels, nothing works. Either would be more of a mess than wiping down before food prep would be, so we gave up. Besides the cats are in our beds and on our pillows, on the bathroom counters, and sometimes between our sheets in the winter. So essentially the whole house is “contaminated.” Being stressed out and upset about keeping them off the tables and counters is not going to change that.

I'm not fond of it but my Hubby enjoys having a cat watch him cook or wash dishes. I personally think it's because he can pretend to be talking to the cat instead of to himself. But as for the sanitaryness of it, that doesn't bother me much. Yeah, I eat off of plates, not the table itself. This is me too. Our cat does go on the counters. It doesn't bother me.
