Hey peas!
I'm turning 40 in March and I'm looking for a trip to New York. I've always, always wanted to go. I won't be staying but for like two nights. I need help!
It seems to be cheaper to fly into New Jersey....how would I get from New Jersey to a hotel? ha
Where should I stay?
Any places we MUST eat?
I want to see a Broadway show - which one and where do I get tickets?
Any other Musts to see?
oh yeah, is it still cold cold in March??
TIA!

If you take a car, bus or train, it will cost you to get into NYC. It may be cheaper and easier to fly into La Guardia. I’d say it’s a wash to get to Manhattan with JFK and Newark. Consider your time, esp if you only have 2 days.
Weather can be a blizzard or a delightful spring day. It’s all up to Mother Nature.
If you have never been, I’d at least do a ferry ride around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I’d do the 9-11 Memorial, walk Times Square and Rockefeller Center, and see a show.

It be the worst ice storms you have ever seen, or torrential rains. Or the most perfect spring weather.
Btw it can happen in one day!

It's very easy to get from Newark airport to Manhattan.
There's a monorail at the airport that you can take to the airport train station on NJ Transit. It's very simple to find and there are people in red jackets around the airport that will help direct you if you need help. That train will take you right to Penn Station in Manhattan, right in midtown (34th street). Depending on where you decide to stay, you can walk to a hotel, take a taxi or Uber or Lyft or Via or take a subway.
So many Broadway shows to chose from. Look at what's playing and see what you'd like to see. If you want discounted tickets, go to a site like THeatermania.com.
Yes, it is generally still cold in March, especially early March.

melissa is right about the transport from Newark. It is an easy airport to get to and to travel in and out of. Its my choice for NYC. As for Broadway.. If you haven't been I would go see a big show like Wicked or Lion King. Dear Evan Hansen, is popular and so is Mean Girls. We are going at the end of Feb, and are going to see Mean GIrls (not my choice) the Prom, Beautiful (my daughter is obsessed you'd think she and her friend were the first to ever hear Carole King) and possibly to Kill a Mocking Bird. ( it is a hard ticket to get) Have fun!

Sounds fun! Since you have limited time I would caution not planning too much all over the place. If you want to center it around theater than stay as close to the theater district as you can, some I've frequented (you can find deals on groupon):
Hotel Edison - great location and generally fine The Manahattan at Time Square - good location, older hotel Millenium - time square, nice hotel, def pricier
Go to Broadway.com click on shows to see what you like, go thru website to get tickets. If you want something overall that everyone likes, I recommend Wicked, Chicago, Lion King. But check and see, like if your a Carole King fan, you would like Beautiful. Also, Jersey Boys is off broadway right now (smaller theater) but still a great show if you like those tunes.
You can easily walk to Rockefeller center, maybe a bit of Central Park, do Top of the Rock near sunset so you can see the Empire State and stay til it gets a little darker.
If you are going to the 9/11 museum or anything downtown, plan to get there early in the morning. Plan to spend 3-4 hours.
Be aware for shows you need to be in line at least a 1/2 hour or so before to get in, get to your seat, etc.
Make reservations for meals if you want something good, altho I caution against expecting a great meal in touristy area. If you want something better, go to Chelsea or Soho. Would have to know your tastes to suggest.
But there's Shake Shack, pizza, bagels, delis..... I mean everything in NY is better bcz of the bread/dough/water.
A few suggestions:
Lillie's victorian restaurant - a cute british inspired bar. I only had brunch there, it was good, different place.
Bella vita - pizza - on 43rd or 44th, good for pizza, salads
O' Brien's Irish Pub - typical pub food, space but need reservations if going at a popular time
Playwright Tavern - 2nd floor pub food - good location if you get by a window
There's some decent quick food type places near the Port Authority.
And it's fairly simple to get from Newark airport into city via shuttle and train as long as you are comfortable with public transpo.
Are you coming on a weekend or during week? During week traffic is way heavier due to commuting, so just be aware.
And yes, we tend to get blizzards a lot in March!
If you have anything more specific or special interest, I'd be happy to suggest.

I was in NYC in March a couple years ago. Big snow storm closed the meetings I was there for. It was easy to get around NYC on foot with boots. Streets are cleared very quickly and efficiently -- I was impressed. We walked to the park to watch the kids sledding.

I went to you NY many many moons ago. It all depends on what you like. I did not do all of the touristy things. I wanted to see places that I've read about in books, so I went to SoHo, Little Italy, Gramercy Park, Washington Square. I also went to Central Park, the MET, Times square, saw an off broadway production and at the time - the site of where the world trade towers stood ( I was there less than a year after the attack). We took the subway or buses everywhere we went. We slept only 5-6 hours a night in order to pack it all in. I'm sure there were other places we went that I don't remember, enjoy!!

I always look at the average temperature for the area on Google and shortly before I leave look at the 10 day forecast. I have never been surprised using the 10 day forecast to pack a wardrobe.

oh my goodness! We are looking at March 1-4th.....you mean I might need to prepare for snow?? ha! Yes, definitely. I'm out twice a year, October/November and March/April. In early March, there's a good chance that it'll be winter-like weather. Time to shop "end of season" sales.

Some friends of mine stayed at the Pod Hotel Times Square - it was remarkably inexpensive, and they thought it was great. The location can't be beat. There are buses to and from Newark airport just steps away at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. If Carlo's Bakery (Cake Boss) is your thing, it, too, is on the same block. Broadway theaters are walking distance away (assuming you have no impairment), and the subway is right there to take you to the WTC and other popular destinations.

Just saw your post about airport transportation - if you don't mind the fare, a yellow cab is probably the easiest way to get to your hotel from LGA.

Sounds great!! Did you already book the flight? If not, you could check with Frontier Airline. It's much smaller than the norm (& definitely no frills but much cheaper). I've taken flights from FL to NY for under $60 round-trip. I'd check it out before staying in NJ and then having to go into the city and go back to NJ for your flight! If you are staying in NJ, there are hotels close to the airports. DH and I used to live near Hoboken, NJ (close to the city, on the Hudson), but every time we'd go into the city, it was expensive. Driving would cost us a lot in tolls and parking. The weather in March could be a blizzard or it could be in the 50's. Just watch for updates as you get closer to the date. As far as what to see in Manhattan, it's endless. I've been down south for 8 years now and I miss the great restaurants (even delis have great food!!), pizza, bagels, NY hot dogs at a stand, Yankee games, museums, Broadway shows, Lincoln Center (especially Mostly Mozart each summer)... But if you've never been there, maybe you should do a tour?? Have fun!!!! And Happy Birthday, 2 months ahead!! Ooh, one more thing : I'd see if there are any great performers playing at Madison Square Garden. You won't experience a better concert than there!!!!

Whew. And getting tickets to shows might be hard this late?? Depends on the show. If there is something your heart is set on, take a look for tickets now. One show I haven't seen mentioned that I would wholeheartedly recommend is Come From Away. I see that on the Today Tix app, so that one wouldn't be a problem (just depending on your date/price). I just saw Kinky Boots for the second time recently with my daughter and I had forgotten how much fun that show is. That one is not hard to get tickets too either and reasonable prices. If you don't have a strong preference for a show, you can also wait until closer to the time and book a few days out or when you are there go to TKTS and see what deals are that day. I personally prefer having tickets in hand so you don't have to plan around TKTS or waste time in line (especially on a shorter trip). If you have the option, do "will call" for tickets so you can just pick them up at the box office just before the show (I hate having to take tickets with me because I am paranoid I will lose them!). If you haven't already, check out the NYC Tripadvisor forum - lots of good info there. I just caution that if you post a question, be very specific or you will just get a "read the forum" response. "Must eats" is a pretty broad question. If eating is a priority, check out the forums or some of the lists to see what appeals to you. If you want good food, but don't care about specifics, plan your itinerary for what you plan to see, then look for restaurants that are recommended/get high ratings for that neighborhood. If you are traveling with others, the food halls can be a good choice (as long as not completely packed) because everybody can get what they want. have fun!

I used to like Crumbs (down the block) so much more, but Carlos's Bakery is well known. I think that Crumbs is gone now. Danny Aiello had a great Italian restaurant right there too (Hoboken), Tutta Pasta (never in, I just looked it up and they closed a while ago, but they have great restaurants and shops there!).

We had a credit for plane tickets for some that we ended up not being able to use in September of last year! But thanks for the tip!! I’ll use that later! I love to travel!
We booked our flight for getting in late March 1st and leaving the 4th. Short trip, but funds are tight and the plane tickets were the cheapest then.
A friend told me to take a bus to the subway from LaGuardia! I hope we can find our way around at 12pm!
Looking at Hilton Garden Inn on 8th street. Someone told us it was around everything. And we could walk everywhere else once we got there!
I will check out the forums! Thanks!!

The Hilton Garden Inn on Eighth Ave is in a great location - 8th *Street* is in a completely different part of town, not at all near the Broadway theaters. Double check the address of whatever hotel you choose on Google Maps to be sure you're getting what you want! The bus to the subway is hands down the cheapest way to get from LGA to your hotel, and it's not hard. At noon, I'd highly recommend it. At midnight, neither the bus nor the train will come as often - while they never stop running entirely for the night, just be aware that you'll likely wait longer.

Not fancy, but looked upscale because of the new remodel. The rooms were a decent size for NYC. The subway stop is right there, as well as a a little market, Rite Aid, and a Pret a Manger (great for breakfast!). I swear there’s a Starbucks nearby, but I didn’t see it on the map. I probably just didn’t see it, as it seems like there’s one on every corner. You will fine navigating the city at noon. Not as busy as the morning rush or rush hour and lots of people around so it’s safe. We either drive in or take the train, so I can’t comment on busses. When I stayed at the Hilton, we took a train into the city and then the subway to the hotel. The subway stop is a block away, so it was super easy to get to.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in December. Good location.
About shows:
I want to second the recommendation for Come From Away. It is an incredible show. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Also exceptional: To Kill a Mockingbird.
I also enjoyed Beautiful and Dear Evan Hansen,
You can’t go wrong with Wicked.
I do not recommend Lion King. I loved Lion King when I saw it ten years ago. I took my husband to see it in December and I was floored by how mediocre it was. The only bright spot was the actress playing Rafiki.
