So I’m sitting here waiting for dh to get stitches 🙄 and a woman walks in because she thinks she’s pregnant but the home test was negative yet she’s 15 days late.
Hardly seems like an emergency 🤷🏻♀️ But surely this isn’t the most ridiculous reason so tell me peas, what are some the ridiculous reasons you’ve heard of.
Edit: days not weeks.

Not an emergency to have a pregnancy test, but if she is having abdominal pain, perhaps there is concern that she might have an ectopic pregnancy.

I am actually more concerned that other people can hear the patient and medical staff conversation.

So ER or Urgent Care? I could *almost* see someone going in to Urgent Care if they didn't have a regular doctor (NOT that they should...). Definitely no to going to a regular ER.

I am actually more concerned that other people can hear the patient and medical staff conversation. I was in the E.R at Christmas time with appendicitis. I was pretty shocked that I could hear everything happening with the lady next to me, down to her social security number. I’ve been to that same E.R for myself two other times, with my DD once, and with my FIL once, and always been in individual rooms, where you couldn’t hear what was happening with other patients. I’m on the outskirts of a large metropolitan area, with a ton of hospitals. My whole family prefers this one because it’s still small and minutes from our house. They’ll still be my hospital of choice, the care I received for 2 nights after surgery was beyond excellent. And my RN daughter was visiting on pretty watching with an eagle eye.

I am actually more concerned that other people can hear the patient and medical staff conversation. Its quite common actually depending on the layout of the ER/hospital. Most have just a curtain so yes, you do hear lots of conversations, between Drs and Patients. I avoid the heart hospital this time a year as they have just a curtian. Even if they keep me overnight for observation I have NO privacy. The last time I was there for appendix. I could hear an asian nurse yelling at a senior man. Who couldn't hear very well. She was screaming at him "you have no heartbeat'' They were telling him he needed a pace maker. I am a life long heart patient. So I found it somewhat amusing. I actually asked one of the nurses if they needed help talking to him. We kinda joked about it. I felt really bad the poor wife looked throughly confused. Then when they did shock him he would scream. It's one of my fav ER stories to tell. Besided Dh's mom's story. The one girl was trying to explain what she had to her elderly mom. Then the elderly mom started puking because the treatment the daughter was getting was making the mom nauseas. So poor Dh's mom had to listen to the lady throwing up and she wasn't the patient. At least not to start. I can't remember what the issue was or the outcome of the mom. If i go to the reg hospital just up the road which I just did last time for another infection, they have bay areas that are more like rooms with a sliding door so it's a lot more private and quiet. I've had a few procedures done there. On the pregnancy thing, maybe she's high risk?

I am actually more concerned that other people can hear the patient and medical staff conversation. It could be because I was sitting outside the curtained room that dh was in (with the curtain open) because me and blood don’t get along (and ds8 was with us). Perhaps if I’d been in the room I may not have heard anything. 🤷🏻♀️

If she has insurance, they will probably deny her ER claim. That is a stupid reason to go to the ER.

I once had someone tell me they took their young child to the ER with a fever because they needed Tylenol and the ER was closer than Wal-Mart.

Many years ago before electronic medical records, I saw an OP ER typed sheet where the person was there because they smoked some marijuana and now they felt "funny".

Common cold To have stitches removed Sometimes they're instructed to come back and get their stitches removed. The instruction I have always heard is to have your doctor take them out *or* come back to the ER. Ive always felt that it was just to cover themselves if someone didnt get them taken out. I would never go to the ER for stitch removal- my copay is $250 unless admitted.

Common cold To have stitches removed My husband had stitches and was told to come back to the er to get them out. I took the them out, because we went going to sit for hours with a 3 year old to get it done.

Common cold To have stitches removed Sometimes they're instructed to come back and get their stitches removed. Yes. Sometimes people are also instructed to come back for blood work if it has to be done on a specific day and the outpatient labs aren’t open. So that isn’t an insane reason to go to ER either. Not that anyone mentioned it here but it’s another non emergency reason a person would go to ER.

I will top all of your stories.
My son liked to swing daughter around by her hands. One day he hurt her. We thought her arm was broken. So we took her to the er.
As far as they could tell he popped her elbow, nursemaid’s elbow, but they put a splint cast on her. She had to wear that for 2 weeks and then we could take it off.
2 weeks, she would not let us take it off! We had to take her to the er to have a DOCTOR take it off. I was able to get into her pediatrician, who pretended that we were at the er.
Yes I am the mom who take her spoiled rotten child tithe doc, to have some gauze unwrapped!

I once had a doctor tell me to go to the ER for regular birth control-related care when I was commuting 4 hours per day and couldn’t get to a regular clinic and didn’t have vacation time to take a day off. I did not go as I pretty much have to be on the verge of death to concede going to the ER.

I once thought I was having an appendicitis and went to the ER. I'm in a semi private area only separated by curtains to the next patient. They did an ultrasound, then the doctor asked me if I've ever had an abortion. No, but is that something you can see in an ultrasound, is that something you casually ask people, how is that relevant?

I worked in a hospital lab many years ago. One night we had a really bad storm and even some people that lived in town couldn’t make it in to work so hospital was short-staffed. The police and fire dept even went out to get key personnel. Anyway later that evening one of the techs was over in the ER to draw blood and heard the doctor sort of yelling at a patient.
Come to find out, dude had a sore tongue for 3 days, called the ambulance to bring him to hospital from a poodunk town about twenty miles away. The reason his tongue was sore? All he’d been eating for those three days was Doritos. So doc went off on him for endangering the volunteer ambulance staffers and wasting his time when there were truly ill people needing help.
Good times.

Some people go the ER rather than urgent care because of their Medicaid vs urgent care copays. Also, most urgent care facilities around here make you pay up front while an ER will bill you.
