Paul Waldman... ”According to this story, Trump instructed Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about his contacts with Russia: buzzfeednews.com/article/jasonl… If true that's absolute grounds for impeachment. But Trump will deny it, and how do you prove Cohen is telling the truth?”Because with all the lies trump tells how can you believe anything he says? it's not only testimony from cohen, from what I heard- they have other documentation about this, including from other people and written evidence (e-mails, etc.). Pretty cut and dry, in my opinion.

Yes, the newscast is real. The Russians have been pretty stoked recently about their victories.
Keep in mind - that the entire time Trump has been lying about ties with Russians, the entire time that Cohen was being directed to lie about it - the Russian side of the equation knew the truth. Putin could release the information any time he pleased.
It was never about the pee tape, the pee tape is a minor distraction. It's about the fact that Putin controls Trump because he knows the truth. Trump is compromised and can be manipulated into doing anything Putin likes.
As the old saying goes "the truth will set you free." Until the truth is released - the entire truth - Trump will continue to be under Putin's control. It's up to us to decide whether or not it's acceptable to have a foreign leader with that much power over our president*.

But Trump will deny it, and how do you prove Cohen is telling the truth?” Because with all the lies trump tells how can you believe anything he says? When the FBI raided Cohen’s office didn’t they get a lot of taped conversations? I seem to remember that. Or was that just a rumor? eta: Honestly, once rumors of an investigation into collusion and obstruction started going around anyone that was stupid enough to a) be a part of it and b) keep anything related to that should have burned it at that time. I realize a lot of electronic records can’t be gotten rid of/scrubbed, but recordings and paperwork could, phones and computers can be “donated” for newer models. So I will laugh for days if it is some sort of physical record that brings any of these idiots down. It was widely reported when they raided his office that there were boatloads of tapes and that he taped almost everything. My guess is that he saved those tapes on purpose in case this exact scenario would come about and he needed something for leverage. And since Trump isn’t big on email, I’d be willing to bet most of their discussions happened by phone and those recorded conversations are what is saving Cohen’s bacon. While not exactly a get out of jail free card, it does put to rest the questions of who is really lying.

Drew Hammill..
”The United States Congress is a co-equal branch of government in our system of checks and balances. The Congress has a constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight in the war zone where our men and women in uniform are risking their lives every day.”
“After President Trump revoked the use of military aircraft to travel to Afghanistan, the delegation was prepared to fly commercially to proceed with this vital trip to meet with our commanders and troops on the front lines.”
“In the middle of the night, State Dept's Diplomatic Security Service provided an updated threat assessment detailing that the President announcing this sensitive travel had significantly increased danger to the delegation & to troops, security, & other officials supporting trip.”
”This morning, we learned that the Administration had leaked the commercial travel plans as well.”
“In light of the grave threats caused by the President’s action, the delegation has decided to postpone the trip so as not to further endanger our troops and security personnel, or the other travelers on the flights.”
”Whether here or abroad, the Speaker always thanks our troops, diplomats and intelligence community for their heroism & service. The Speaker commends her colleagues on the delegation, who personally & officially have dedicated their lives to protect & defend the American people.”
But but those emails....

This is awesome. This is one of the many reasons he will get re-elected. Dear Madame Speaker, Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over, In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative. I look forward to seeing you soon and even more forward to watching our open and dangerous Southern Border finally receive the attention, funding, and security it so desperately deserves! Sincerely, Donald J. Trump trump just tweeted this.. ”Kevin Corke, @foxnews “Don’t forget, Michael Cohen has already been convicted of perjury and fraud, and as recently as this week, the Wall Street Journal has suggested that he may have stolen tens of thousands of dollars....” Lying to reduce his jail time! Watch father-in-law!” This is a threat issued by the President of the United States to Michael Cohen. Keep quite or we are coming after your father-in-law. And you support this man? Really?

linkMitch wrote an op ed for the Washington Post... 😀 “ Mitch McConnell: Behold the Democrat Politician Protection Act““For the past two years, our united Republican government drained money and power from Washington and returned it to states, communities and families. From middle-class tax cuts to regulatory reform, we took this approach and watched the nation thrive more as a result. 😀 Democrats have a different philosophy. After November’s elections, everyone knew Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the new House would send the Senate far-left proposals to retighten Washington’s grip on the country. And right on cue, even as their refusal to invest in border security prolongs this partial government shutdown, House Democrats have wasted no time rolling out a sprawling proposal to grow the federal government’s power over Americans’ political speech and elections. House Democrats won’t come to the table and negotiate to reopen government, but they’ve been hard at work angling for more control over what you can say about them and how they get reelected. They’re trying to clothe this power grab with cliches about “restoring democracy” and doing it “For the People,” but their proposal is simply a naked attempt to change the rules of American politics to benefit one party. It should be called the Democrat Politician Protection Act. Why else would the bill scrap the neutrality of the Federal Elections Commission and set it up for a partisan takeover? Since Watergate, the commission has been a six-member body so neither party can use it to punish political opponents. Apparently, Democrats have grown tired of playing fair. This bill would weaponize the FEC with a 3-to-2 partisan makeup. It would also empower that newly partisan FEC to track and catalogue more of what you say. It would broaden the type of speech the commission can define as “campaign-related” and thus regulate. Many more Americans would have to notify the feds when spending even small amounts of money on speech or else be penalized. That partisan FEC would also get wide latitude to determine when a nonprofit’s speech has crossed that fuzzy “campaign-related” line and then forcibly publicize the group’s private supporters. Apparently the Democrats define “democracy” as giving Washington a clearer view of whom to intimidate and leaving citizens more vulnerable to public harassment over private views. Under this bill, you’d keep your right to free association as long as your private associations were broadcast to everyone. You’d keep your right to speak freely so long as you notified a distant bureaucracy likely run by the same people you criticized. The bill goes so far as to suggest that the Constitution needs an amendment to override First Amendment protections. Democrats aren’t only coming after free speech. They’re also taking aim at your wallet. Pelosi and company are pitching new taxpayer subsidies, including a 600 percent government match for certain political donations and a new voucher program that would funnel even more public dollars to campaigns. Maybe that’s why every Democrat opposed our tax cuts for middle-class families and small businesses. They’d rather use your money to enrich campaign consultants. I’m as firm a supporter as anyone of vigorous debate and a vibrant political discourse — but I don’t think Americans see an urgent need for their tax dollars to be used to bankroll robocalls and attack ads, including for candidates they dislike. Democrats would also like you to pay for generous new benefits for federal bureaucrats. Their bill proposes making Election Day a new paid holiday for government workers and six additional days’ paid vacation for federal bureaucrats to work the polls during any election. This is the Democrats’ plan to “restore democracy”: extra taxpayer-funded vacation for bureaucrats to hover around while Americans cast their ballots. Even more egregiously, the legislation dedicates hundreds of pages to federalizing the electoral process. It would make states mimic the practices that recently caused California to incorrectly register 23,000 ineligible voters. It would make it harder for states to fix inaccurate data in their voter rolls. Yet the legislation declines to address the sketchy “ballot harvesting” that upended the result in North Carolina’s 9th District — perhaps because the practice is perfectly legal in California, where Democrats made huge gains in 2018. The whole package seems tailor-made by Washington Democrats to help their D.C. attorneys descend on local communities, exploit confusion and try to swing elections. The antics we saw in Florida in November would be only the beginning. From the First Amendment to your ballot box, Democrats want to rewrite the rules to favor themselves and their friends. Upending the FEC, squeezing taxpayers, attacking privacy and jeopardizing our elections are a price they’ll happily pay for this partisan power grab. Fortunately, the November elections that handed Pelosi the House also expanded Republicans’ Senate majority. I hope the two bodies can find common ground and build on the bipartisan successes of last Congress — but this outlandish Democrat proposal is not a promising start. My colleagues and I will proudly defend your privacy and your elections.” Well this is interesting, the most virulent and disgusting attack ads in my state, in the midterms, were funded by the Mitch McConnell aligned PAC - The Senate Leadership Fund. 🙄

linkFrom MSNBC “Trump White House reportedly sought to put Pelosi 'in her place'”So why did this happen? According to a striking New York Times report, the West Wing wanted to put Pelosi "in her place." “White House officials -- including Mick Mulvaney, the acting chief of staff -- had been irked by Ms. Pelosi's invocation of security concerns as her premise for urging Mr. Trump to move his speech, and sought to put her in her place after she had emphasized that she represented a coequal branch in governing, according to aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.
Depriving Ms. Pelosi of an aircraft was the easiest way to remind her, they said. So Mr. Trump made a play for dominance and one-upmanship.... White House aides were tickled by the move, even as some acknowledged that Republican House members might fear for their own trips going forward.”

NPR...
“Defying Trump Administration, Calif. Offers Federal Workers Unemployment Benefits”
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the Trump administration has told states they can't offer unemployment benefits to federal employees who are required to report to work without pay during the government shutdown.
Newsom called a letter sent to states by the U.S. Department of Labor "jaw-dropping and extraordinary" as he met with TSA workers at the Sacramento International Airport Thursday afternoon. "So, the good news is, we're going to do it, and shame on them."
The governor explained that California will offer the workers unemployment coverage, despite the federal government telling the state it can't do so for workers still on the job. Newsom says he believes California is on strong legal footing.
Transportation Security Administration employee Miguel Pagarigan, who commutes about 40 miles from Vacaville, Calif. each day, said he's not sure how long he can afford to go without pay as the shutdown continues.
"Because of the shutdown and being furloughed — or basically, not being paid — I had to put a 'for sale' sign on my house on Sunday," Pagarigan said, beginning to cry as he spoke.
The Trump administration does not appear to be opposing unemployment benefits for federal workers who are staying home during the shutdown.
Newsom's appearance follows a protest by two dozen federal workers at the airport Wednesday.
Phil Miedema, a 68-year-old federal employee, said he was supposed to retire in December but the shutdown held up his paperwork.
"I'm not spending money," Miedema said. "In fact I was I was concerned just driving out here wasting the gas and have to pay for parking so I could have my voice heard. My lifestyle is just on total hold."
Miedema said he has one month's savings and after that he'll have to take out a loan to pay next month's bills.“

And who else is talking? How does Whitikar's wife know these things and freely talking about them?!?!?!?!? Is she sharing pillow talk? Acting attorney general's wife emails reporter that Mueller investigation is 'wrapping up'By Eli Watkins, CNN Updated 7:58 PM ET, Thu January 17, 2019 Washington (CNN)Marci Whitaker, the wife of acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, sent an email to a reporter pushing back on an article and said the special counsel investigation was by all accounts "wrapping up." Whitaker's email came in response to an article Mark Joseph Stern co-authored at Slate arguing that the Senate should not confirm William Barr, President Donald Trump's choice to lead the Justice Department, just to remove Whitaker as a threat to the special counsel probe led by Robert Mueller. Whitaker sent the email to Slate writer Mark Joseph Stern, who published it after saying the outlet's technology director "confirmed that the email originated from mail servers operated by her company." On the special counsel probe, Whitaker wrote, "It isn't really or shouldn't be that controversial to state that the Mueller investigation should stay within the parameters given. Particularly when that is said more than a year prior as the investigation is just beginning. Why would a person need to recuse oneself for that mild statement? "If abundance of caution is the standard, anyone who ever spent 5 minutes contemplating the topic would need to do so. And by all means, assume that a person who speculated on a hypothetical scenario would then put some dark plan into motion, when by all accounts, the investigation is wrapping up and they [sic] eyes of the nation are upon them." She ended her email with a postscript asking Stern not to use her work email address and phone number "in any ill manner," noting the effects of the ongoing government shutdown. The Justice Department is among the portions of government operating without new funding until an agreement is reached. "I like my job and I need to continue to earn a living, particularly in light of this shutdown," she concluded. ** www.cnn.com/2019/01/17/politics/marci-whitaker-trump-mueller/index.html

When cornered or defied or denied or shamed, the president of the United States gets petty. In his single-minded compulsion to indulge his own pettiness, he considers nothing else. Only his own satisfaction.
I’m still disappointed, but no longer surprised, that his paid minions “Atta boy” him.
I’ve moved far beyond disappointment in his base. These are the people we live among, and they keep showing us who they are. They could be somewhat reined in, though...
...but they’re not. Because the truly frightening piece is the cooperation of GOP legislators. In their zeal to prevail, they daily indulge this man’s pettiness and dishonor. None of them is a disordered narcissist, yet they publicly indulge one. And they neglect their sworn duty by continuing to inflame - or at least mollycoddle - the president’s base, no matter what they think privately...and by continuing their years-long efforts to subvert the legislative process.
Theirs will be the bigger crime - and hopefully the deepest shame.

Also, chiming in late, but serving a banquet of fast food at the White House is not a huge deal, but it is decidedly tacky.
Also really tacky of the president to announce his private funding of the spread, although it would have been fine to include that information if asked.
There are probably hundreds of caterers in the DC area who daily serve items that would fit in the vast culinary gulf between a McDonald's fish sandwich and steak and lobster. Any one of them could have been hired by Donald Trump with neither fanfare nor controversy.
Just all around really blechy tacky.

This is a man who thinks he does no wrong and that if he does, it doesn't matter and if it does matter he won't be caught, and if he's caught, he won't be punished or face consequences. I just...what in the world of all the fucks does Putin know that scares trump THAT badly?! The oligarchs have owned Trump for years due to real estate deals/money laundering. There's a really good article that came out about it a year or so ago. I don't know if I can find it, but will try. So you think that's mostly what it is? Money laundering? Do you feel that's enough to keep trump in line? I also know I should consider that trump is a weak piece of shit and so if he thinks Putin is some amazing god, then that's even more reason for him to want to please Putin.
