Some of you seem to think that fed employees are recession proof. That is absolutely not true . Budgets change all the time and fed employees get laid off. In the 23+ years my dh has been working at this job there have been three rounds of layoffs! Many long term employees max out their pay. They teach the top of their pay grade and can’t move to the next without another degree, experience or whatever. The only increase is the cost of living increase which is usually lower than reality and of course this year does not exist because tRump canceled it so the rich could be richer. My mom was a minimum wage clerk for many years with the government. It is no piece of cake! Federal employees aren't the only ones not getting raises. I haven't had one in over three years.....and no raises in sight. I'm not interested in another job. I like the flexibility of this one and getting another would probably prove impossible. I worked for a local government for 25 years. There were many years I didn't get a raise. We were also furloughed and didn't get paid for those days. I stayed because of the retirement and benefits.

The what-passes-for-a-raise in past years is significantly less than the increased insurance costs. I didn't get a raise this past year (and you can bet the bank that my insurance went up yet again).
I love the flexibility on my job too (we get every other Friday off), combined with the short commute.
Let's hope we still have jobs to go to in another 2 weeks when more contractors run out of money.

I've never understood the mentality that says, "I haven't had a raise in years, so everyone else should be fine with not having one, either."

I've never understood the mentality that says, "I haven't had a raise in years, so everyone else should be fine with not having one, either." It’s an unhealthy mentality, but for some, it is reality. Herd vs merit. I never apologize for that. It’s why I got out of the military. And also the reason I choose not to work for the federal government. I choose to bet on me. I don’t need anyone else to take care of me.

As an adult I’ve lived in 5 states. I grew up a military kid and had parents that hit hard times when I was in high school. No college fund, certainly no trust fund, and was out on my own at 17. There are a million paths to take. I chose one that worked for me. I’m both proud and thankful that I am 100% confident I can choose another job tomorrow in several fields as I have gotten experience, education and just as importantly made contacts over the years that know I am very good at what I do, do it with integrity and represent their business well. Lucky me, right? I had to find my own opportunities. Make them myself when there were none, and make sacrifices along the way. Not to say the federal employees didn’t. ahhh, it's the old standard, 'pull yourselves up by your bootstraps' line. good times, good times... let's just toss in a couple 'welfare queens' and 'food stamp fraud' bits, too. Or maybe 'back when I was a kid, I walked uphill to school (both ways) in the snow' or something to that effect.

Let me add that as an adult, living first a civilian, then a DOD, then a US Navy life, I have lived in 6 states in my adult life and I’m very lucky (because CA was twice, along with 5 other states). Since we had multiple billets and government jobs in DC, we’ve been able to live in VA for 15 years. And only because my Dh had his PhD before entering the Navy, and was in a very small specialty area/classification, otherwise we would have moved to another 4-6 states (and maybe another country or 2) during his 23 years in. I can’t tell you how many military families would weep with joy if they only lived in 5 states during in their careers. So, take the source as someone with an atypical military experience and has no business speaking for the furloughed government workers.

Or maybe 'back when I was a kid, I walked uphill to school (both ways) in the snow' or something to that effect. Aren’t we duty bound to “validate” one another whenever we say anything? Gee thanks. Actually this was in response to someone asking where I lived that good jobs hang from trees. Not a brag or a be like me. But- thanks. Funny thing, I have more understanding of folks that struggle than most people on this board, I’m the last to throw out “welfare queen.” When was the last time your judgey ass ate a meal provided by folks that bought food stamps at half off so someone could afford school clothes for their kid? I’m sure you think you know, but don’t tell me who I am.. It’s not a contest. My POINT from the beginning is that I don’t feel furloughed employees regardless of the employer should be paid if the don’t work. Period. Pay the ones working. Consider if others are truly needed (some are! Maybe many! I don’t know! I just don’t think a federal worker who chose a non essential role (however defined- you do you!) “deserves” pay when the vast majority of Americans taking a day off for weather, child care, health, family care what ever the feel is worthy, take vacation or unpaid. These folks aren’t martyrs. This isn’t a hidden secret shutdowns happen (at the state level too folks!) They are working a job just like anyone else. When I worked in food service and my shift was over scheduled, some one got sent home. They didn’t get paid after they left. Regardless your stance on this freaking stupid wall- this is one of the root problems with our government. Spending money we don’t have. So yeah. Make it about me. Feel better?!

You started the pissing contest, placing yourself as the be-all know-all of government employees and why they have no business being upset by the furlough. Whatever you think, you have no idea what the typical furloughed government employee is experiencing right now. Your life experience is one TINY window into a very large world and you show a hefty amount of hubris to assume that you know why the furloughed workers knew what they were getting and should be fine with not getting paid RIGHT NOW whether or not they are being forced to go to work.

Your truths and your experiences and the folks you know are way more real and valid than mine. The ones on their tails at home? Well.. if I was on my tail I would be burning vaca or not getting paid. Since this whole post was originally about government workers, I'l take a leap and assume you're still referring to those government workers on furlough. Someone else on this thread may know more accurately than I do, but AFAIK a government worker cannot take their leave time either during a furlough since it's all still government money.

Do you not even read what you write? So you think you are so important that I know what your education level is? I don’t follow you 😊😂 Of course not. Besides, education doesn’t equal intelligence. I just identified the typical “identify by my husbands rank” mentality. Which is cool, til you try to act as if you “served” and know anything about military experience. And further have the audacity to tell people MY experience is atypical! Hahahah you don’t even know what typical IS! You inserted yourself, on behalf of your husband, and felt you could “correct” my experience?! You’re right, mentioning your gladware was a very deliberate dig. And spot on obviously 😂 While you and your son are attending appointments that active duty I personally know would love to have, be sure to pass along my regards. A lot of the logistics folks and care providers know me. My contractor stint was at USAMMA, until I couldn’t stand warming a desk. Now I get to visit periodically and do actual work.

No. They canceled leaves. Further reason they should not be getting paid. They can file for unemployment insurance in many states (if not all.. I don’t know about all states. Of course when they are paid back by the government I believe they have to pay that back. A ridiculous web of stupid that shouldn’t be happening.

Well, pin a rose on your nose. And try not to choke yourself with those bootstraps.

Sure thing. I have no idea what USAMMA has to do with actual treatment at Walter Reed - just with acquisitions at Detrick. I go to WRNMMC at least weekly. Let me know who to send your regards to, I’ll be happy to. And I’ll let everyone know that you’re happy that those designated as “non-essential” aren’t getting paid. I’m sure that they’ll appreciate it.

And also the reason I choose not to work for the federal government. I choose to bet on me. I don’t need anyone else to take care of me. Well, pin a rose on your nose. And try not to choke yourself with those bootstraps. I don’t have it in me to play this game again tonight, cause... well... gotta go to work tomorrow!! Otherwise, it’s some BS, but if I don’t go, I don’t get paid. Crazy! lol But I’ll be back tomorrow. Have fun with it. Can you maybe belittle me for being a single parent veteran that chose not to take a government job because stability for my kid was more important than the great retirement, healthcare and vaca plans? Because I knew (because I’m around federal and state employees that are subject to this game?) Don’t take it in the vein it was intended. Pull out a tiny piece of the convo. But you can do better! Surely I said something else that’s way easier than this to misconstrue! Nah! I’m actually simply the One person that stands on both sides of the government and refuses to talk. I caused this shutdown and certainly have the power to resolve it.. Not just a freaking human being with an opinion.

Well.. USAMMA is where most of the logistics decisions are made which determine the standard of care, not just for the Army but for all services. And most senior leadership in healthcare floats quite literally to the top there, before retiring into their cushy G.S. jobs. Medicine, equipment, people, training, policies etc. If you gave a shit and actually cared, I’d be glad to explain it further and how it ties in. But you seem to have a handle on it. Google is your friend 😘

The lack of compassion from some people is unreal. Let's not forget that furloughed employees never asked for this.
