Those boys acted horribly as "representatives of Christ on earth". Period. I never heard that Phillips was surrounded. I always heard he walked between arguing groups. Nothing has changed that. What the boys did w/the hooting and hollering and parodying him was disgraceful. As it would have been if a bunch of African American boys had hooted and hollered and jumped around a chanting priest.

You bring up an interesting point. "Those boys", yes, they were boys. That's not an excuse but clearly they were not mature enough to handle the situation they were in.
I'm not defending the actions of those boys but I am calling them what they are - the actions of boys. Boys who were ill-equipped for the situation they were in. They did act disgracefully, absolutely.

I disagree that he's equivalent to a priest. He's an activist who's lied about his service to the country, committing an act of stolen valor in order to build himself up. He never set foot in Vietnam, yet he called himself a "Recon Ranger", he wasn't. His other statements were meant to mislead that his service was more than it actually was, he never corrected anyone in interviews (as far back as 2015) when they called him a Vietnam vet... until that was questioned this year. He was discharged from the military on misconduct charges and being AWOL. His words in describing the actual racists at the event were "they were old black men" (meant to depict them as nothing more than victim minorities) completely leaving out that their words and actions showed them to be undeniably raging racists full of hate) vs. his words about the school boys "they were beasts". He's done this before to school kids in 2015 where no evidence was found then either. So I disagree that he's equivalent to a chanting priest. His actions that disprove his words, have me seriously doubting what he claims were his intentions. All the the evidence people used to "yeah but" the actual beastly racists and convict these kids in the court of public opinion and smear them to the ends of the earth, was nothing but short clips of the event, 8 second videos and headlines with the words MAGA HATS. When multiple unedited versions of the event came out showing the full story, even many of those in the left leaning media said no, it wasn't the way it's been depicted.

There will always be people that want to sink their teeth into something and hold on tightly though. Just watch, this will soon become “but the MAGA” hats... for the far left just as the “emails “ were for the far right.

I agree that the mainstream media got this wrong and that's a problem that shouldn't be overlooked. I agree that Mr. Phillips does not now present as a truthful or reliable person.
But I also think the MAGA hats are a symbol of policies that discount the humanity of minorities, immigrants, women and others, and were totally inappropriate to be wearing on a school trip that was supposedly about respect for human life. I also think the boys' behavior toward the native Americans was completely disrespectful and inappropriate.
This is not a zero sum game. Both sides can be in the wrong. The boys were skewered in the media and now their PR firm is making sure the Phillips gets his skewering as well. The black Israelites weren't really held in high esteem before this anyway, so idk - can we all just agree that they're crazy and offensive?
Bad behavior all around and no one is innocent here.

That is how I see MAGA hats. I am friends with and have plenty of family members who are conservative Trump supporters, and most of them do not wear MAGA anything. The ones who do, like for instance my father, are very much about "going back to the good old days." I've tried to tell him, more than once, that they weren't such good old days for a great segment of our population. I should also add that my dad is definitely racist and sexist. He often says very inappropriate things, still uses very racist terms when referring to people who are not white, etc. Right or wrong, from my own experience with people in my real life, the MAGA wearing folks are definitely for those policies that
as Merge said, "discount the humanity of minorities, immigrants, women and others..."

So you’re attributing the attitudes, beliefs and actions of a few people to a group of strangers because they have one thing in common?

In this incident, I heard him only identify himself as a Vietnam-era vet. As several have said, there was plenty of deplorable behavior all around, but it's interesting to see so much of it in a group of boys purportedly being privately educated to be Christ's representatives on earth.

This is not an honorable man. He's on his own video saying he has section 8 housing because he "was in theater" meaning he was in the war. A blatant lie he told. Same video that he made himself, HE says hes' a "Vietnam vet" not an Vietnam-era vet. He's also interviewed in Vogue magazine saying he was a "Recon Ranger". No. We won't bother getting into the major problem with what branch he served under and what he's calling himself. The only response to it is stolen valor. You can choose to believe whatever you want, but I'll choose to go by the facts of this man's lies vs. the interpretation of a kid's facial expressions, the interpretation of the group doing pep rally cheers to drown out hate speech, the interpretation of an 8 second video devoid of any context to back up the claim it's being used to make. Believe what you want, I'll believe what I want and we'll call it good.
