I have no doubt these kids are behaving in a way that makes their parents proud. #MAGA Yep. His mom responded— “His mother’s response to a Heavy.com reporter quickly made it clear why the kid was so comfortable with racism. Rather than take responsibility for her son’s actions, she instead gave the Trumpiest excuse she possibly could: double down on the racism, blame the media for being the real hate-mongers, and then saying that her son had somehow been driven to harass the old man because he himself was harassed by…”black Muslims.” “In an email to this reporter, the mother of the student right up in Phillips’ face said the story was “fake news.” She claimed that Phillips, who she referred as a “this man,” in quotation marks, was drumming close to the teen’s face. But her biggest gripe, besides saying this reporter was promoting hate, was that she alleged the students were themselves harassed. By “black Muslims.” “Shame on you! Were you there? Did you hear the names the people where calling these boys? It was shameful. Did you witness the black Muslims yelling profanities and video taping trying to get something to futher (sic) your narrative of hatred?? Did you know that this “man” came up to this one boy and drummed in his face? Shame on you. Only reporting what you want. More fake news.” When this reporter thanked her for the correspondence and explained that it would be reported on as part of the story, she demanded the emails be deleted. “Delete my email. I want nothing to do with helping perpetuating (sic) your hate. I do not want to be a part of your story. You are ruining a boys life for fake news. Hate spreads like wildfire. I pray for you.” There is no evidence that there were any “black Muslims” present at the Indigenous People’s Rally, which the racist kids chose to insert themselves in front of, and even if there were that doesn’t explain why they needed to swarm around an old man and chant “BUILD THAT WALL” at him while smiling from ear to ear. But it does explain why this kid thought it was acceptable to behave this way. Hate begins in the home, unfortunately, and seeing that his mother immediately concocted a racist conspiracy theory to explain her son’s appalling actions tells you everything you need to know about what kind of a household he was raised in and what kind of a man he’s going to grow up to be.” Poor, poor privileged white boy.

I do expect more from kids raised in privilege - and by that I mean not only affluence, but also a safe neighborhood, stable home life, good education and a community of (supposedly) adults with integrity to guide them. That's not in any way to excuse a young person without those privileges who commits a crime. But I don't think these are comparable situations.
This young man and his friends had it within them to stand there and smile as they mocked an old man. They did it with cameras on them, in public, knowing that others would see it. To my way of thinking, that shows that they know from experience that there will be no consequences for their actions. Their particular life of privilege has taught them that they can target others with impunity.
These boys look young to me - perhaps only 14 or 15. I'm not sure I think their lives should be ruined over this. I think the greatest responsibility lies with the parents and school who send boys to a march that supposedly is about respect for human life, apparently without having taught them any such respect.
I think the largest censure should be given to the school and these boys' parents. At some point we need to confront the culture of careless indifference and cruelty that some of our institutions are perpetuating. And yes, we also need to confront how these attitudes are played out and expanded in MAGA culture nationwide.

If someone wore one of my hats and acted publicly in this horrible manner I would definitely make it known that I did not share their views or condone their actions. Us waiting for that bloviating sack of rat turds to say anything about any of his racist followers

Those are the "Black Muslims" intimidating those Catholic Boys??? They stood in one spot and people came up to then to listen to their Bat Shit Crazy Rantings. It was their right to free speech and anyone who didn't want to hear it could just walk away. They were crazy racists too. "Indian means Savage." Gross.

I think there's a difference in consequences between a teen who sneaks out and breaks curfew, or drinks beer, or smokes some weed and a kid who publicly exercises hate.
The grace we extend to white people, especially white men, is astounding compared to how we treat POC in this country. We'll call these young men "boys" and "kids," but we won't extend that same language to young black men. There are YEARS of videos, articles, mountains of evidence to support this. If they were old enough to be there engaging in political action, they are old enough to face the consequences of their hateful action.
Ashley Ford said it better than I did. "Letting kids off the hook is actually not the most compassionate thing you can do for them [...]Being held accountable is not violence."

I hope that their parents deal with them appropriately. Little shits. I would bet that they won't since the kids learned this at home first. Even if the school is teaching it, you know it's reinforced at home. I'm just picturing my kids and their friends and a teacher who tried to teach intolerance -- they'd come home with "MOM!! You'll never believe what Mrs. Teacher said today!!!" and then they'd be organizing their friends to write an email to the principal.

They were carefully taught.

So, the MAGA crowd gets all up in arms at Colin Kaepernick taking a knee at football games because it's so disrespectful to veterans. Yet, directly disrespecting veterans is okay if you wear the hat? Maybe there’s a label on the inside of the hat: “This product was designed for white people. Results not guaranteed if worn by brown people.”

I’d bet good money those kids picked up their hatred and self-supremacy at home, and their actions are fully known and supported by their families. It’s part of the whole MAGA ethos. More like the priest there... Caravan? Does he mean the trail of tears? Where the hell does this asshole think NATIVE Americans come from? Maybe they should do what these MAGA assholes tell them to do and ‘go back where they came from’ and take back the land his church is on? How would he feel then? Does no one educate anyone anymore? These are like the stupidest people.

Yivit that video was super interesting. But also really crazy,,.so the bearded guys are a weird racists cult or something, harassing passers by and they latched on to the school group, it seems. And the people there for the Indigenous rally came over to kind of break it up, and then the scene happened with the kid and Phillips. It does give a lot more context, thank you.
Honestly from start to finish the group of kids should have been far away from all of it. The smirking priest made me want to punch him, even though the man yelling is clearly delusional and saying very offensive things. It was like a sideshow for them or something.,,I dont know. I’m not good at putting words for it together.
Generally I fear for America, and I think the long video made me fear even more. What have we become...

This twitter thread is an EXCELLENT illustration of how the problem is not just with this group of teens, but with the school, the parents, the Catholic church. (The Catholic church has an extremely racist history in how they've treated indigenous peoples, friends.)
The school has history. The town has history. This is a manifestation of an ongoing problem. So, if you're white and you see this in your town, your school, or your church, how are you speaking up? We have to do better.

Imagine mocking and being blatantly racist to a Native American veteran, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, on MLK weekend! Infuriates me.
There are all sorts of people on the news sites claiming this is Fake News. Makes me sick. How can you defend that punk and his peers?

This’ll get interesting... From NBC News: The thing is, they can expel these kids, but the whole racist ass school will still exist. All white teachers. History of harassing other students of color. History of problematic issues. Allowed a rapist to walk at graduation. They need to throw the whole damn school away and start over.

I watched the whole thing with the sound off, focusing on the people in the background. I couldn't find any adults. None. There is a photographer, and later a woman who seems to be upset with the kids and says something (I turned on volume for that) but no adults. NO ONE tried to stop the kids. And they do a tomahawk chop arm gesture with sound effects, they think it's funny. I do not understand where the adults were during this video. In the back, egging them on??? WTF. ETA: Found this photo on Reddit. These two pictures are amazingly sad. Will the world ever change ☹️

The fact that they obviously don't see the irony of yelling 'Build the wall' at a First Nations man makes me question the quality of education at Covington Catholic.

It shows me that things are rarely as simple as everyone makes them to be when people first hear of a news story. Which makes me guess that some will be thinking as they read what I just wrote that I love MAGA or a similar thought, which is so far from the truth it is laughable. Maga protesters are making my life much more difficult and I'm having to take measures to protect me and my family safe as I work on helping asylum seekers. I just get frustrated with assigning of blame, motivation etc so easily when news like this comes out and that makes things even more heated. How I wish we could really sit down and talk, or rather, really listen. But I fear we are long past that and things will only get worse.

WOW 😮 This video is so disturbing but does show more of the whole story. I give Nathan Phillips, the Native American man, lots of credit for choosing to approach this very large group of high school kids. Probably not the outcome he expected when he walked over to them.

I’m off to read Sock’s Twitter thread, but having spent 25 minutes scrolling through the context video, what I think this really comes down to is that these kids have been failed.
The ignorance, racism and disrespect stand alone. The context does not excuse or explain the stare down, the obvious mocking (some could be just “joining in” but most of it looks pretty mocking and certainly the chants are inappropriate. BUT, let’s just put that aside and cut them some slack and pretend, like the mom is pretending and I’ve seen others imply, that it was just a big misunderstanding. They didn’t really mean disrespect to the Native Americans, they were joining in and/or it was all the “radical Muslims” fault.
Who the HELL was in charge and who failed them so horribly? Who did not educate them before hauling them to Washington DC without proper preparation? When you go out of your bubble, you are going to see and hear things that you can’t control and aren’t going to like. Why didn’t anyone explain proper protocol for counter protestors? They were going to a pro-life rally and going to a public place known for second amendment soapboxes and counter protesting. They were absolutely going to be exposed to dissent. Where were the supervisors? WHy was it dusk and they were still on the mall? Smdh.

Here's the info on that kid and his school: NAME: NICHOLAS SANDMANN SCHOOL: COVINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Here are the contacts: Covington Catholic High School: Principal Robert Rowe E-mail: browe@covcath.org Telephone: (859) 491-2247 Diocese of Covington: Phone: 859-392-1500 Email: info@covdio.org Diocesan Board of Catholic Education Superintendent, Michael Clines: (859) 392-1500 E-mail: mclines@covdio.org Assistant Superintendent, Karen McGuire E-mail: kmcguire@covdio.org
ETA: I felt compelled to write an email to the Principal, having been a Catholic school girl and having learned to have respect for my elders, etc........ I was suspended a few times for even looking at a nun the wrong way. These kids need to learn a good lesson here.
Are you sure that’s the correct kid? I had seen that there was a similar looking kid who was identified, but he wasn’t at the march - he was at a wedding in another state. I would hate for the wrong kid to get the torches and pitchforks. Yup. This kid was initially referred by another name and I corrected it. No need to even PUT the name on any calls, emails or communication with the school though. They'll know who he is & anyone could link the footage.
