Do you think that the black students would be unable to come up with specific instances in which white supremacy affected them? That is the purpose of the protest when the national anthem is sung/played; America is not the land of the free for everyone. Also, while I have never experienced the specific injustices related to white supremacy, I would still feel comfortable participating in a protest against it. Many white folks participated in the March on Washington, even though they did not suffer racial injustice. Liberation is for everyone. I am sure that the students who support Trump could come up with their reasons. I'm not sure they'd admit them to everyone, though. In my mind, freedom and equality for all isn't a "politically charged issue" or a partisan issue. It's what's right for human beings. If a political party is against that, they're immoral. I’ve watched news coverage of various demonstrations and when asked what they have to say, most of them look like a “deer in the headlights”. I’m sure both these groups would be the same if asked. I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying here. Who is "most of them?"

I never said the protest of the flag was an insult to President Trump. Where did you get that from ? The boys are showing support for their President and the black boys are showing their support for, as you say, “specific injustice toward black youth”. Both politically charged issues. By the way, I bet neither group could state why they supported Trump or what are the specific injustices they themselves have suffered. All these things are pushed by the media, parents and coaches/teachers. Those “black boys”live the injustices they’re protesting every day. Every time they go out in public. Those white bouts are racist privileged protected jerks. If you don’t see the racism I have a bridge to sell you I would love for a news reporter to interview those black boys and hear about the injustices they face everyday.

The boys who sit out the anthem are protesting injustice regardless of what Trump has tried to make it into. The boys who wear the MAGA hats and carry the Trump banner are protesting what, exactly? Blackness? Not just President Trump making it into something; without the Media the kneeling would have gone no where. The boys wearing the MAGA hats and carrying the Trump banner are not protesting; they're showing their support of President Trump. Just like the black boys in the locker room are showing their support of black issues by sitting out the National Anthem of the country they live in. I would say that in addition to supporting Trump, the boys are supporting his racist policies and ideals. And using his tactics of fear, intimidation, and taunting to do so.

Goddamnit I am so sick of shit like this. I cannot believe that this is where we are as a country in 2019. I really can’t. neither can I. But it’s everywhere. There’s a certain pea whom I probably owe an apology to about the fact that I did not see this in my ‘bubble’ but I don’t interact with that pea anymore. But if I don’t put up with racist bull crap and I raised my kids not to put up with racist bull crap they only associate with people who aren’t like that and there’s a bit of a bubble created around you. Although I do still cling to thinking that my children’s generation is much less racist than my parent generation was. I sure as hell hope I’m not wrong about that too.

Mary, do you really think it's fair to describe the boys as "hiding in the locker room?" Considering the coach has explicitly stated in several news outlets that they intentionally do not take the court for the national anthem during away games, I feel like you are intentionally dismissing their very real choice here to call out white supremacy. I would also like you to explain your "most of them" comment as I requested above, please.

Staying In the locker room is not getting any point across at all. I don’t see how staying in a locker room is calling out white supremacy. My “most of them” comment you want explained is people during protests getting asked what they’re rallying or protesting for. I’ve seen sooo many such news stories (CBS, ABC, NBC) over the past years that the responses are jaw-dropping. They have no idea why they are there or what the purpose of the rally is. I stated upthread that I thought “most of them” in the locker room or on the bench with the 2020 flag could not explain their side. News media, parents, teachers & coaches are pushing their agenda.

Also it is very clear to me that mnmloveli is a racist, who doesn't believe in racism. Sadly there are way too many "white privileged" folks like this. When somebody shows you their true colors, believe them.

I think you should give the black players more credit. By the time they are juniors and seniors in high school, living in an inner city—a city in which there have been innocent black men killed by police in the last few years—I think they know what they are protesting. Are you being purposely obtuse in regards to my comment about the Jordan fans using fear, intimidation and taunting?
