I am furious with him. Of course he has to resign. I'm almost more upset at him because he's a Democrat & I do expect more from 'My' side. He should have known better. He should never gave run for office, knowing he'd done that. Now, because of his abhorrent, rscist behavior, he's destroyed his career, his reputation, and he's hurt the state of Virginia, who may end up with a Republican governor. On the last point, the Lieutenant Governor is a promising young black Democrat who fairly easily defeated a pro-gun and anti-choice candidate and would succeed Northam and should serve the state well should he do so. Governor comes up every four years. We could end up with a Republican governor in any given election cycle. So different from Canada. Here, you can't just appoint someone to finish the term. There would need to be a special election. We call them by elections; not sure you do. And as an aside, while I do support term limits I think one term is too short.

It’s not an appointment, it’s a succession plan codified in the law. We know when we elect a lieutenant that that is one of the potential duties, to take over for the governor should the governor resign, die, or otherwise leave office.

Conservative Twitter - even the principled ones - has completely taken the "infanticide" version of what he said and run with it like it's the gospel truth. I'm not surprised at all that people here are repeating it as fact. I honestly cannot for the life of me grasp that pro-birthers believe that pro-choicers are in some way pro-abortion and support it like it's some kind of happy go lucky decision or merely a flippant lifestyle choice. Do they really think so little of us, that we're so inhumane and cruel? There is no critical thinking whatsoever, no self-reflection, no attempt to even reconcile who we are as people and that we might have a different philosophy about what constitutes life. We are just bloodthirsty baby-murderers to them. It is rabid and irrational and not a good look for them. Could that belief came from the SHOUT YOUR ABORTION movement? The campaign where woman were telling their stories of using abortion as a form of birth control? Not all, but enough to paint a picture. The campaign that celebrities endorsed and participated in. Celebrities with loud voices and big platforms? It really did change the narrative from "safe, legal and rare" to "safe, legal, and here for my convenience". That could be where the belief "that pro-choicers are in some way pro-abortion and support it like it's some kind of happy go lucky decision or merely a flippant lifestyle choice" came from. From pro-choicers themselves. That's not to debate abortion, it's only in answer to your confusion as to why anyone would think that.

Another would be to destigmatize the choices women make to control their own destiny, just like men have been able to do for always. Rarely is it to do with mere "convenience." We should all consider why it's so important to the right to use this wedge issue to demonize women, without giving any consideration to the real reasons why women have abortions. Why the lack of nuance in your understanding?

Northam is now saying he does not believe he was in the picture at all............. he will not resign. I am not buying this for several reasons, one being that yesterday he admitted he was. Also, if that were true, why wouldn’t he speak out about it when the yearbook was published?

I've no problem with people calling for Northam to resign. I'm 100% fine with it. But if you're doing so and *haven't* publicly called for Trump to resign at least *30 times*, including after he called neo-Nazis "fine people" in *2017*, I have *strong* feelings about your values. Its hilarious to see this. They try the “gotcha” Dems do this & that, yet you never see conservatives call out their own.

Who cares if he wasn’t involved in the production of the year book? It was a section on him, he provided a quote for it, is he trying to say he never saw it? I don’t believe that for a minute. If he wasn’t involved and if the beliefs represented in the photo do not align with his, why didn’t he raise holy hell when he was identified in the yearbook that way? And why admit to it yesterday? Eta: looking at the photo spread he would have had to provide them. These are not school events.

Good lord is anyone listening to his press conference? On top of wearing that racist, offensive costume he is lying through his teeth.

I have a pretty poor memory of parts of my youth, but if someone claimed to have an 80’s yearbook photo of me in blackface or a KKK robe I would immediately know I’ve never been within a million miles of a photo like that.

I know. It is jaw-droppingly surprising and disappointing beyond belief. And these were all young adults - not high schoolers. All should have known better. I certainly did in college in 1984. I’m disgusted with you. And in the medical community ... people of science, supposedly. Even in 1984 (I was all of 11 years old) we knew that was very wrong. Feeling old here... In 1984 I was married and 23 years old, done with college and working in a lawfirm. My brother just finished up his residency in CHOP, and there's no way in the world that this would have been acceptable in 1984, even for high school!! This is just disgusting and not something appropriate for any yearbook, any school, anyone! They should have the brains to know that it's offensive. He should resign.

He needs to resign. Now. No more press conferences, unless it is to say bye-bye.
Dragging this out just makes it worse and I think even less of him, if tha was possible.

No, nothing that makes sense. Someone probably told him that they can't prove it was him. According to him he didn't buy the yearbook and knew nothing about his page. They put the wrong photo on his page. Bullshit!

If he was not racist and would have nothing to do with a photo like that, his friends would have been well aware and surely at least one of them would have told him.

Oh yes he did............. in reference to the small amount he put on his cheeks when he did if for the dance contest to do the Michael Jackson 'moonwalk'.. he only used a little! and he won the contest. He had the shoes and a glove.

If he was not racist and would have nothing to do with a photo like that, his friends would have been well aware and surely at least one of them would have told him. This wasn't a college yearbook; it was a med school yearbook. I don't know of too many med school graduates who actually bought their yearbooks. But this was infantile and racist, no matter what age he was. I'd surely recall all of my Halloween costumes, and I have spotty memories for the years I was in hospitals. You'd recall painting your face! I compare this to how Al Franken stepped aside. Al Franken seemed to be empowering women, so that pic of him was surprising, although he WAS in comedy & the pic didn't show his hands actually ON that woman, but there could be much more to it...... Al Franken's work in office didn't reveal him to be a racist or sexist pig. This VA Governor seems to be of that ilk where he could be in denial and think he could get away with it. NEXT!

This opinion will probably piss some Peas off but I cannot stand those women who stand silently by their asshole husband during a press conference dealing with the husband's lying and trying to wiggle out of whatever mess they've gotten themselves into.
I am afraid if my husband screwed up he'd be dealing with that without me standing like a fool beside him at a press conference.

I’d stand there by his side supporting him if he was admitting to his errors and sincerely apologizing and making amends for them. But not lying and making excuses; that’s not the man I married and I couldn’t support that.
