So this morning I am driving to work and there is a bunch of debris in the road. I (thought) I went around it. IT was a block from work when I got to the office my tire was nearly flat and there was a huge piece of metal stuck in my tire!!
AAA was going to be 3 hours.. so my kind colleague and friend changed the tire and I went to a tire dealer a couple of blocks away he ordered a tire and said it would be ready around 2pm.
He called after 2 and said that the technician had left the locking lug nut tool on the trunk when he popped it to put the spare back in. The lug nut hit the back window and it shattered.
So... Safelight is coming in the morning to fix it.
He said he would take care of it.
But I live 30 miles from work, so I had to get a ride home, I had to leave my dog at the kennel another night (I was away at the weekend) and I had to get a ride from a co-worker home. I also had to get someone to pick up my daughter and I have a number of errands I was going to do.
So what would you expect the tire store to do?
Pay for the window replacement?
Give you some sort of discount on the tire?
Give you the tire for free?
Expect the tire store to pay for the extra night at the dog kennel?
My colleagues at work have all weighed in with their opinions. ( Lol I didn't ask them) But i thought I would ask what would you consider fair compensations?
********************************************* Update: Safelight called me this morning around 8 as it was pouring with rain to ask if there was a garage he could do the work in. I told him that they said he could do it one of their bays.
I had heard nothing at noon so I called. the woman hemmed and hawed put the phone down and I could hear everything.. everyone she asking said, " I don't know or Not my responsibility" So after not being annoyed I was starting to get frustrated.. but finally I was told it was ready.
A co-worker took me over.. she handed me a bill for the full amount. I was surprised. I handed her my credit card and said, " You know this damage to my car was very inconvenient to me. I proceeded to explain it all to her. I said the least you could do is not charge me for the labor of the guy who trashed my car." She said it has nothing to do with me!" and she bellowed LARRY!! The guy I had talked with yesterday. He came and proceeded to tell me how he personally had vacuumed my car! I said.. Oh so you cleaned up the mess you made, but you haven't taken into account how your employee's carelessness impacted me. He took the bill crossed out the price said to the gal working the desk... get her name and address and make her sign it. And then asked me for my keys to get the car and left.
If he had sincerely apologized to me for my inconvenience and knocked something off the price I would have been happy. But his attitude, and the way the whole place seemed to not want to take responsibility. I won't go there again, and why I won't walk around bad mouthing them. If anyone asks, I will say don't go there.
I get accidents happen, but this was negligence, and good customer service goes beyond fixing what you damaged.

I would expect them to replace my window. It would be nice if they offered a discount and if you are paying for a ride they should pay for that

I would accept his payment for the window. I wouldn't expect anything else, sometimes things happen.

I would expect him to pay for the window and to give me the tire for free given the inconvenience of the window being broken.

I would expect to be reimbursed for any out-of-pocket expenses due to the shattered window. I realize that accidents/mistakes happen, but their carelessness shouldn't cost you any money. Sounds like it's also caused a lot of inconvenience.

Car problems are such an annoyance when it's your only vehicle and you need transportation.
I would expect that they replace the window with an OEM window, not the whatever is the cheapest available. I would not expect a free tire or discount or reimbursement for the kennel.

Pay for the window and maybe a tire discount. It's not their fault about the tire, but it'd be nice!!
Sorry you had all that trouble... when it rains, it pours, doesn't it!?!

Pay for the window for sure. But that’s it. Accidents happen and they did make it right. It’s unfortunate that it caused you some inconvenience but I wouldn’t expect them to pay for that

Interesting opinions.
I feel like they should DO something for the inconvenience of being without my car over night and having to get a ride from work and back to work and it was 100% caused by their carelessness.
my car is less than a year old... and both issues were caused by someone else's carelessness...
I would be happy if they did something! replacing the window IMO is their obligation... good customer service would take it a step further.
sigh....

What a "unfortunate series of events" to have happen to you. So aggravating.
They definitely must make good on the window replacement. And if they are savvy at customer service, something further would be nice. It is not, however, reasonable to expect them to make good on all of the fall-out from it. Unfortunately, the broken window just falls into the "mistakes happen" category.

Replacing the window is good customer service. I think it's unrealistic to expect anything else.
Sorry about your day!

Yes, they should pay for the window as offered. A bit off more would be nice but not written in stone. Not like it was done on purpose. Sorry for all the assorted stuff though............

I would have let them know I needed a car to pick up the dog and to get home and back to work, and if they didn't have one to loan you a rental would work. After the fact I don't think you can expect anything except them paying for the window and in good customer service I would hope they would offer some discount off the tire.

They replace the window. They drive ( or provide for) you to where you need to go. They deliver the car to where you are.

I would expect them to replace the window. A nice-to-have would be the tire at cost.
I'm sorry that all happened to you. What a rough Monday!

Also let your local Government know about the debris. We can call 311 here and they will clean up the road.

I would expect the window to be repaired on their dime and a free loaner or a rental for my use until I get my car back. I shouldn’t have to be further inconvenienced because someone was careless.
If the OP would have been given a loaner for a day she would have been able to pick up her dog and do whatever else she needed to do.

DH said 'All of the Above'.
He is a hard ass and has no empathy for people doing stupid things that put him out. He also believes it doesn't hurt to ask.
So, ask for it all. You may get 2 out of 5 or 3 of 5. Won't know until you ask.

So I feel they should replace the window at no cost to you and it would have been nice if they had a loaner to offer or paid for an Uber.
Almost 2 weeks ago my dd took her Jeep in to the dealer for an open recall (she just bought it a month prior) and while they were fixing the recall the technician exploded ALL of her air bags! They called her to inform her and told her where to go to pick up her rental car. I think that was amazing customer service. I feel bad for the tech that did it and I hope he didn't lose his job over it although I realize its a very expensive mistake to make.
I hope they do whatever makes you feel whole and I'm sorry it happened.

I would expect them to pay for the window and ask them to pay for the extra night at the dog kennel. They don't owe you anything for the rides you had to ask for unless you used an Uber or a taxi and paid money for those rides. I would not expect them to pay you money or give you a tire discount because someone had to give you a ride. I would also ask them to either drop your vehicle off at your work when it is repaired or pick you up from work and take you to your vehicle.
Mistakes happen. I would expect to made whole but not to get anything above that.

I would have asked for a loaner/rental overnight, explaining that you expected to have your car back in order to get 30 miles to home and pick up a dog who is in a kennel costing you money! Hopefully they do something for the inconvenience, but I would have addressed that right away.

This - it would have been nice for them to suggest it, but I absolutely have to have a vehicle and would expect to be reimbursed for the rental if they don't have a loaner available.

Replacing the window is good customer service. I think it's unrealistic to expect anything else. Sorry about your day! sorry, but replacing the window is their legal obligation. They aren't doing her a favor, they destroyed her property and they have to fix it. Yes, it was an accident, but that doesn't mean it's not their responsibility. Good customer service would take it further. If I were them, I would have offered rides to and from her home.

Man, what a day!
They are of course obligated to replace the window. They should have offered a loaner or rental car but since it's too late for that. I don't think they would reimburse you for the kennel fees or things like that but a couple of oil changes would be a nice offer.
