I recently purchased a Macbook Pro and would like to use an eternal monitor and keyboard while I'm in the office. I do not need the best of the best, but would like to have a nice, crisp screen. I'd like 27" but 24" would be ok. I will be working with text as well as a lot of photos and graphics. Of course I want good quality but I also don't want to drop $500 for a monitor either. I guess I'll settle for "good but not BRILLIANT!" if I have to. Any personal recommendations?

No recommendations, but I do have a Samsung 24" that I'm not 100% thrilled with, but is okay. I think because the screen is large, it causes the letters to be slightly blurry. I have messed with ClearType as well as the contrast, sharpness and brightness and never get to be as clear and sharp as I would like. If would probably not buy another one unless a newer model could prove differently.
