NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—In his first interview since being found guilty on all counts in his U.S. trial, the Mexican drug lord Joaquín (El Chapo) Guzmán called himself the victim of a “phony witch hunt.”
The former cartel leader made his blistering comments in a phone call to the television program “Fox & Friends,” whose hosts appeared surprised that he had somehow gained access to a phone and was able to get through to them.
“It was a phony witch hunt,” El Chapo said, of his trial. “It was a phony, rigged witch hunt, and the charges against me were fake news and a disgrace.”
Questioned whether he had worked in concert with other drug lords to bring narcotics into the United States, El Chapo said, “There was no collusion. And there was no evidence of collusion, because there was no collusion.”
But the former drug kingpin reserved his harshest words for the F.B.I. and its former director James Comey.
“Lying and leaking Jim Comey is a showboat and a disaster,” he said.
Asked to give his impression of the American justice system, El Chapo said, “I think it’s very bad when someone like me, who is running a business and creating jobs and helping the economy, is harassed and treated unfairly. I think it’s a disgrace and, frankly, very sad.”
***ETA is anyone else having problems posting with a link included? Lately, everything I type/add turns (blue) into part of the link itself to make everything one big huge link. (thus the 2 separate posts) What am I doing wrong? never had problem before- what's glitching? this site or my brain?

LOL, that’s great! Test link to Borowitz Report.
eta: No adding a link worked the same as it usually does for me. eta2: Ha! When I went back and added eta it inserted the previous link on the ‘e’. No idea how that happened.

Bernie introduces "Scrap the Cap" SS legislation: "he legislation that Bernie Sanders proposed today goes in the opposite direction of austerity politics by strengthening and expanding Social Security. On the revenue side, it lifts the cap on payroll taxes so that the wealthy pay a more equitable share. Part of the reason why Social Security is now spending more than it takes in is because extreme income growth at the top, and stagnation at the middle and bottom, has created a situation in which the share of earnings above Social Security’s tax cap has nearly doubled, from 10 percent in the late 1970s to 18 percent today. That means that a billionaire pays the same amount into Social Security as someone who makes $132,900 a year. While people like me and most people I know pay payroll taxes on 100 percent of our incomes, ultra-wealthy figures like Jeff Bezos, who make most of their money on investments, pay only a minuscule proportion — as little as .00028 percent — for the same maximum benefits. By mandating that people who make over $250,000 a year pay full Social Security taxes, including taxes on unearned income, Sanders projects that Social Security would be solvent for the next fifty years and raise enough revenue to increase benefits across the board, along with expanding them for survivors, low-income seniors, and children of people with disabilities. It would also allow the Social Security Administration to use a more accurate cost-of-living adjustment formula, CPI-E, that factors in the spending habits specific to seniors. Right now, more than three in five seniors depend on Social Security for most of their income. One-third rely on it for nearly all (90 percent or more) of it. Without Social Security, the poverty rate among seniors would be nearly 41 percent instead of just under 9 percent now." jacobinmag.com/2019/02/bernie-sanders-social-security-expansion-privatizationThis plus a Financial Transaction Tax would go a LONG way to unblocking the enormous concentrations of wealth in the highest levels of the economy that ends up financing lots of sh#( outside our economy - like factories and penthouses. Instead that money would go to provide services to people AND pay a salary to people unlikely to move that money offshore.

Much negotiator. Many dealing. Trump Has Lost on the Wall. Now He Can’t Win on Trade "The episode brings the truth about Republican members of Congress into the open: Although they have little interest in dragging down the Republican president, they also aren’t willing to give him anything on policy. The border wall has been a good test case. Unlike the tax cut or repealing Obamacare or confirming conservative judges, the wall was basically a Trump project rather than a regular Republican idea. And he couldn’t manage to get it funded, either in the Republican-majority 115th Congress or the new, Democrat-controlled 116th. And even on taxes and health care, Republicans in Congress basically ignored the long list of unorthodox preferences Trump has pushed over time. Instead, they moved ahead with what they would have done if Marco Rubio or Scott Walker or an autosigning machine had been president. But the wall is far less of a big deal than the new trade deal with Canada and Mexico, which needs to be ratified by both chambers of Congress... As with his wall, Trump seems to think he has a winning move to play: If Congress doesn’t give him what he wants, he’s threatening to unilaterally take the U.S. out of Nafta, leaving lawmakers with a choice of the new deal or nothing. That’s basically a variation on the only negotiating move Trump has used in his time in the White House: Walk away from the table and threaten to ruin the nation in hopes that all the reasonable people will give him what he wants. The first time I heard a politician say SS would run out of money by such and such a date I said that the SS cap needed to go. It's a no brainer but since most of congress doesn't have a brain it's understandable why it's never happened.

A judge ruled on Wednesday that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller multiple times.Manafort “intentionally made multiple false statements to the FBI, the [Office of Special Counsel] and the grand jury concerning matters that were material to the investigation," Judge Amy Berman Jackson decided. Manafort is currently in prison for various financial crimes that are unrelated to the campaign. ** thehill.com/homenews/administration/429921-read-judges-ruling-in-manafort-plea-dealPlea deal is void! Netflix paid less in Federal Income Tax on $845 MILLION IN PROFITS than you pay for 1 month of service.
This is America. Where we can't have medicare for all because we have to make sure the millionaires turn into centi-millionaires as quickly as possible.

This is just what they did with climate change (Global warming). They (republicans) made a scientific fact into a political issue. Now we will have much more people stop vaccinating. It's crazy and likely to kill us.

" This, in short, was collusion — Trump’s top campaign official giving material to a suspected agent of a hostile foreign government that the campaign had already been warned was attempting to interfere with our election. Whatever you call it — direct or indirect evidence — this now is one link proven in court between the campaign and the Russians. We know of others, of course, including the Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 designed to get dirt on Hillary Clinton, Trump’s public call for Russia to go after Clinton’s emails, and more than 100 contacts between Russian figures and members of the Trump circle." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/02/14/manaforts-court-day-spell-trouble-trump

The GOP and right-wing media have finally decided to follow Trump's lead and just straight out lie to the base. Rather than risk another shutdown, they're declaring victory in the face of less fence-funding. And the low-information base will eat up whatever Hannity et al vomit out.

Amazon the same per this source. Haven’t looked into details for that one yet. But if true? Crazy! But hey, glad we provided more tax breaks for big businesses.

Netflix paid less in Federal Income Tax on $845 MILLION IN PROFITS than you pay for 1 month of service. This is America. Where we can't have medicare for all because we have to make sure the millionaires turn into centi-millionaires as quickly as possible. Gov. Gavin Newsom pulled the plug on building the bullet train from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The reason the cost. When the Bay Area Rapid Transit aka as BART was being built all those years ago, they roughed in the beginnings of extending BART under the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County. It was never done because of the cost. Both are good ideas that would have been very beneficial to the population, whether they knew it or not. Both were abandoned because of cost. Medicare for all is good. California tried to figure out a way of doing it for the people who live in CA a couple of years ago and had to abandon the idea because it would have doubled the state’s budget. CA is not a state that has any problem taxing folks for what they considered a worthwhile reason. Yet they backed off. I certainly don’t have a problem with corporations like Netflix paying taxes. Put the tax brackets back to what they were and close the loopholes. But this idea that if you tax the hell out of the rich and corporations you will get enough revenue to pay for Medicare for all, free college, fighting climate change is naive. What I would like to see, is those rushing to tax the hell out of rich, step back and come up with a more realistic way to pay for the laundry list so they don’t end up like the bullet train, BART extension under the GGB, and Medicare for all in CA. I think the people are tired of empty promises made by politicians and elected officials. I think that has a lot to do with 40%+ of registered voters staying home at election time. Of course I know I’m yelling into the wind on this. For some reason people get great delight in the idea of taxing the hell out of the rich.

@fred, as I've said before, a financial transaction tax of .5% on the $1TRILLION traded daily would net (conservatively) $600 BILLION/year.
