I am looking to upload my aperture library of over 60,000 photos/videos for a back up and I have decided on using Google Photos. Just wondering before I take the plunge if people are using it and what their experiences/recommendations might be.
Thanks for any and all input. Kari

I use Google Photos as a backup. I don’t actually look/use it much since it is just a backup, but I have used it occasionally to show someone an old photo via my phone. My phone uploads to Google Photos automatically when I am on WiFi, so I don’t even think about it. I do not have my laptop automatically upload, so I have to manually do that if I load photos onto my laptop from my camera.
I’ve been using it for a couple of years now and I am satisfied with it. You can easily search by years and you could do a lot more search filters that I don’t take advantage of.
ETA - When I first started using it, I uploaded my entire iPhoto library. I just remember it took quite a while to upload everything, I want to say over a day. That was for about 20,000 photos. And I use the free version, so my photos get compressed a little.

Like katlady I use it just for backup. I never *really* use it. But the photos are there if I need them.

I use it for backup too, and I like the little reminders and movies they periodically send. I also like that I don’t have to do a damn thing, it just seems to work on its own.

I'm with the others above, I use it for a backup only. And I use it to get photos onto my blog (Blogger). I also use Amazon Prime photos as a third backup. I'm a little paranoid I guess.

I use it as a back up. I have the free version, so the images are compressed. However, I have ordered prints using those images and the 4x6s come out just fine.

It is it as my main photo storage. My computer is my back up. I have over 80k photos in it. The search function is extremely powerful, including automatic date, location and face recognition (after initial set up). You can also search for random things like flower, school, soccer, beach, yellow, strong, etc WITHOUT TAGGING!
A player on my son's fall soccer team was also in his preschool class. They are 11 and we haven't seen them since preschool. While on the sidelines I was able to search "school" and go back to that year. I knew I had a photo of them from the end of the year party. He wasn't a close friend so never set up facial recognition for him. Found the photo and sent it to his mom in about 5 min. The sharing function is really easy too. I don't have an iPhone so Google photos is an easy way to share cross platforms. Does make it a little easier if you have a Gmail account.
Check out Modern Photo Solutions for a free class on Google photos.
I have printed 6x12 photos with no issues.

I just got Google photos last month and I found it took a long time to upload my photos. I got about a quarter of them on there and had to stop. Uploading the pics slowed my computer down something awful.

You are moving A LOT of data.

I use it as a backup for my phone and iPad but not my computer. I especially love that my daughters and I can upload our photos from an event to the same folder. I then choose the best ones for my digital scrapbooking. We use the free version and I get my 12x12 layouts printed by Persnickety Prints and they come out beautiful!

Kari I was leaning towards Google for backup as well, except with my photos library. Thanks for asking this...came at a great time for me! Off to read...

I don't use google photos as a back up because I've read they don't save the actual image size, but a reduced version. I don't know if that makes a difference to you.

Google will compress images greater than 16MP. There may be some slight compression of smaller photos. Many photographers have tested images on Google photo and said that unless you are a professional, the differences are hard to notice. There is a paid version where your photos are not compressed.

I use it as a backup to all the images on my phone. I have a Google Pixel so I get unlimited storage and full-res image storage.
But if you're looking for a cloud backup there are definitely better options. Have a look at pcloud as one example. Late last year I grabbed a lifetime 2tb cloud storage backup from them at 75% off the full price. They're very reliable and we'll encrypted so you can trust that your images are safe. You can basically just add any folders from your computer to the drive that you want to back up and it just runs a sync in the background so there is nothing further you need to do once you've set it up.

Then I go search my computer photos to actually print from, mainly because I'm searching on the phone app. Once I had the photos on google photo, but they were deleted from my actual photo files. I also love the assistant. I rarely save the animations they make, but I will frequently save altered photos. They turn some to black and white, some to black and white with the person in color, collages, and videos.

Any tips for uploading? Reading here has tempted me to give it a whirl, not so much for the secure storage but for the ease of finding what I'm looking for. I really miss Picasa in that respect.
So, before trying to upload the 50 or 60k photos I have on my hard drive (and backed up on another hard drive and on a cloud somewhere <g>) I thought I'd try uploading a single folder of about 400 pics- about a month's worth. It uploads about 30 and then stops. I have no idea why and can't figure out how to restart it. Any ideas? What am I missing?

Are there videos in the folder? I found it was just best to let it do its thing. It wasn't a quick process. No videos - just a folder of photos, which I thought would be relatively simple to upload. I know it could take a while - I let it get on with it when I was doing something else so don't really know when/why it stopped, which made it doubly annoying! does your computer go to sleep? Your monitor can sleep but not your computer. Hehe....or I could go to sleep! No, katlady, I was sitting here busy doing something else whilst it was working (or rather, when it wasn't...) I dragged and dropped the 300 or so pics into the Google Photos page and watched as a small dialog box announced "preparing your photos" and then "uploading photos". Leaving that window open, I went into another one and maybe 45 mins later wondered how it was progressing. That's when I noticed "43 of you photos have been uploaded" and the process had stopped. I thought I'd done something wrong maybe, so tried again with a different folder...but I failed with that one too. Maybe I'll try a small bunch of photos and work my way up to a whole folder! I'm a bit frustrated because there are a whole bunch of random pics there already - I assume, those automatically uploaded from my phone and my tablet. My systematic personality wants to be organised and manage this whole process in a controlled way, but as I seem to have all kinds of oddments here and there I think that ship has sailed! Thanks for your suggestions! I haven't given up yet.

I think on my iMac it's set to sync when there's new pix added to Photos.

Thanks brenda89 - yes, I'm using my PC and will check settings and maybe try a different browser too. I also plan to work my way through the video link that caangel shared upthread. Haven't given up yet!

I think there's a download to install onto your computer to allow the process to work in the background. I don't remember for sure though, and I have an iMac.

Did you end up figuring out this problem? joblackford I gave up in the end. I googled the issue and there are so many others describing the same problem I was having and no solutions! Since I've been using Capture One to catalogue my photos, I wasn't so anxious to get it working on my PC. It seems to work much better on my phone and tablet, so I'll probably carry on using it to upload the pics I take on them. But for my camera and my existing collection, I think it's just a step too far. I'm glad you've got it running ok though!
