that's dying. The bottom heating element burned out and I'm thinking ok that's not so bad. I went to the appliance parts store and the girl looked up my part. She said you're not going to want it- it's $129 and most of them are only $30. Would you shell out the $129 for an 11 yr old oven or just bite the bullet and get a new one? I just replaced my leaking dishwasher which ruined my floor, so floor was replaced, too. Thank God insurance covered most of that over $7,000 bill. I bought a slate-colored dishwasher and all of my other appliances are white. So, I need a new slate oven, right?

Your choice..... You need to think about how long the oven might last... Appliances are no longer inexpensive.

Well, my first question would be can you afford to pay for a new oven? If I couldn't, then I would pay to get it fixed and then get serious about saving some money to eventually buy a new one. If you have the money to get a new one, without touching your emergency money, then I would consider getting a new one.

Personally I wouldn't. Our element went in our oven but we couldn't replace it ourselves. Our stove was a fancy one and it had to be taken apart to get at. Paid a repairman to come and look at it. We thought it was just a element it was a sensor as well and by the time it was all said and done it was going to cost $500. He said he wouldn't recommend putting that kind of money into a stove which was 10 + years old

Generally once one element goes the other will be relatively soon. I'd just replace the oven. The upper element has had as much wear as the lower one.. thermostats go bad etc.

We replaced our stove when the heating element went out by finding another stove in great condition on Marketplace. Replacement stove cost $50. Gives us more time to decide whether to buy a new new one or see how this one lasts. We had to do some searching to find the right one but there are a lot of good deals out there.

Honestly, $130 (even if you have to do it twice) is much cheaper than a new oven. I'm not inclined to put an appliance in the landfill if it can be fixed relatively cheaply.
Our first home, which we still own and rent out, has 40-year-old double ovens that are still going strong. I sure do wish appliances lasted like that these days!

we replaced our oven element three times on the last oven - it was easy to do BUT it was a $30-ish part.

This is why I have purchased home warranty insurance since 1999. A realtor told me how she is never without it, so far, I have always come out ahead.

if you buy a new slate oven you're going to need a new slate fridge too

With your oven being over 11, I would get a new one. Appliances just aren't made to last much longer than 10 years in most cases.

I'd probably fix it. If it dies sooner than later, you aren't out hundreds.

if you changed dishwasher to slate, is your intention to change all the appliances to slate? if so, then replace it.

I do want to eventually change them all. If I do buy the oven then I'm going to go ahead and get the microwave. The fridge will just have to wait- it's been going strong for over 20 years. Decisions, decisions! And my head is NOT in a good place right now. I lost a very close friend Monday night, but there's an ongoing police investigation so I haven't posted about it, yet.

I'd be hitting up Best Buy or Lowes or Home Depot for a new stove on the one year same as cash plan!

Our oven won't broil anymore and it's a cheapie oven to start with so I will be replacing it. It's on it's last leg and I wouldn't put any money into it. I just keep going until something else goes wrong. Thank goodness I don't broil that much. I do have a small toaster oven if I really need to broil.

If money isn't an issue, get a new one.

This happened to us in December. Had to buy a new oven. I always think the appliances know when one is being replaced, because others will break down too. Happened with our Refrigerator followed by our washer.

Waiting on the fridge to bite the dust...

When it rains, it pours (and so do my tears).

I would pay $129 for an 11 year old oven. Mine is 24 years old and still going strong and I hope it’s going to last a few more years. It’s certainly a lot cheaper than the cost of a new oven would be here in New Zealand.
