I failed Algebra 12 twice. I did well in calculus but it nearly killed me!

You have to multiply first so 5-25 +5, then do addition/subtraction from left to right 5-25 = -20 -20 + 5= -15

-15
Multiply and divide first, so you have 25; so then it is 5 - 25 = -20; then you add 5, which ends up being -15.

OK, you guys are right. Negative 15.
Need to look up my fourth grade math teacher who said the order of operations was MDAS and let her know (My Dear Aunt Sally). But she's about 110 now...
My kids jumped on me and said that add and subtract are on the same level.
Geez, even the stuff I "thought" I knew--well I don't...

buddysmom, your math teacher was right though. Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. That expression didn't have parentheses or exponents, so you do all of the multiplication first (5×5), then addition and subtraction from left to right.

Since there are no parentheses, it is -15.

I think I figured out what you had a problem with, OP. Addition and subtraction (and separately multiplication and division) are done at the same time, from left to right. I forget the technical term for it but they are the same type of operation (inverse? something like that). PEMDAS is to remind you that multiplication and division go before addition and subtraction.

Instead of thinking of it like PEMDAS, it should be: PE MD AS The top two operations--Parentheses, Exponents--are done left to right. Next, Multiplication and Division, left to right Followed by Addition and Subtraction, left to right

-15.
multiplication first, then addition and subtraction. It's the same as 5 - (5x5) + 5.
