I have to have a colposcopy performed in a couple weeks. I know it’s a cervical biopsy, but how much more invasive or painful will it be compared to a Pap smear? It’s just done in-office so it can’t be too terrible, right? How long will I be uncomfortable for afterwards? Update April 4: So the colposcopy was way more awful than I expected! He took four samples and I bled for three days afterwards, and quite heavily on the first day. Anyway, the results came back and I have stage 2 precancer, and am booked for a cryo procedure in the hospital next week. My mom has offered to take the girls for the evening and afternoon. After feeling so poorly following the colposcopy, I am feeling less confident heading into the next procedure.

I had it done and it really didn't hurt, just uncomfortable for a minute or so. I didn't have any pain after the procedure.

I've had a couple. Done in the doctor's office. I didn't feel any pain, but I could feel the instrument "clicking" as it snipped my cervix.
You'll bleed a little for a couple days but nothing else, no pain. Are they sending the tissue out for testing?

Thanks, ladies!
Yes, they’re sending the tissue to a lab for testing/staging. My pap results were “high grade abnormal”. The doctor didn’t seem overly concerned.

I had it done many years ago and I recall it being a little painful, in part because she took two samples, one right next to the other.

Had that, had LEEP, had chemo radiation for cervical cancer. No real pain from any of those treatments. You may some spotting for a day or so.

I had one done and it wasn't any more uncomfortable than a regular pap. Didn't hurt at all. Wishing the best for you.

I had one. It wasn't fun. I'd say it was extremely uncomfortable for a few seconds while they're getting the samples, after that there's no pain or discomfort.

Thanks for the reassurances and shared experiences! I did some brief googling and read that “recovery could take a few weeks with discharge” and wondered if it was a more intensive procedure than I thought it would be. Also, they offered me an appointment on the day of my birthday and when I hesitated a bit and said why, the receptionist said I def didn’t want to be celebrating my birthday that way, so I made it for the day before instead. I was wondering if I should change it to the week after my birthday but it doesn’t sound like I’ll need to.

I tend to have some pressure, cramping, and bloating after. I have a high paced job with heavy lifting so I schedule mine before a few days off. I felt good after my first one that I vacuumed the day after. Big mistake! That flared up the pain, I almost passed out. Lay low and drink plenty of water. What helps me is to keep bowels moving so you dont have that pressure too. Just my experience. All in all, not the worst. Just lay low after and stay hydrated. I kept the ibuprofen close.

I had one done a few years ago, and was expecting it to be quite painful. My gyn gave me a painkiller and an ativan to take beforehand. I did, and they totally chilled me out! It's the same level as discomfort as a pap smear, with a little quick sting. The whole thing was over in less than 10 minutes.
I wore a pad for a day or two and had some light spotting. I think I took an advil the first night as advised, but didn't really have a lot of pain.
The worst part is the worry beforehand! ((Hugs)) It's over fast!

I had mine done at the same time that a coil was fitted. Slightly uncomfortable is how I would of classed it. But I was already in some discomfort which is why they were doing it.

I had that done as well as a LEEP many years ago. I don’t remember if it was painful but something that they used (or Nerves). made me shake uncontrollably. I think thar was the worst part of it.

I had one decades ago and remember that it stung like a mother. Not so much when they took the samples, but IIRC they swabbed with vinegar (?) and THAT was what hurt.

I've had one as well. I felt the sharp twinch of pain when it was done, but other than spotting no real aftereffects.

Well crap, I'm sorry! Glad they caught it in the "pre" stage.

Oh no, I'm sorry. I had a cryosurgery done and I think it was just crampy. I had a clear watery discharge for a few days after. It didn't work though, and I ended up having to have an LLETZ procedure done.

The cryo isn't as painful as the colposcopy.

I admit this is freaking me out and making me uneasy... not because of this specific set of concerning cells, but because my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer when she was only 5 years older than I am now... and having these precancerous cells discovered is really sobering. What else might I be growing inside of me that doesn’t get scraped out and tested every few years?

ashley I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2008, stage 2b. I had chemo and radiation over a period of 6 weeks. I just had my 11 year annual pap and it came back clean (as have all the others). It’s scary, but if you’re going to get cancer, this is a very treatable type with a very good survival rate. If you have any questions I’ll answer if I can.

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry. I hope that everything goes well and this one is so much easier than the other one.
And good job doing all your screenings to catch something like this in time!

I’m sorry the colposcopy was awful, but honestly I’m not surprised. The vinegar wash for me was the WORST and it stung like a b****. Hopefully the cryo won’t be as bad, and that it will take care of the issue once and for all so you can put it all behind you. Good luck!

I had the cryo done several years ago after they found pre-cancerous cells. The procedure itself wasn't terribly uncomfortable, just mildly unpleasant.
There was a discharge for several days after, I remember I had gone back to work the day after the procedure not really knowing what to expect and then stayed home the next day because it was just aggravating to deal with.
Good luck, getting all the testing and catching it early is really important in the overall treatment.
