Loved this tweet from White House Correspondent Abby Phillip:
Just a reminder that rich people are able to use their money and power to open elite doors for their mediocre children that, in turn, make it far more likely that they will succeed in life. Poor people and POC are expected to be exceptional. This is not a meritocracy.

I'm disgusted but not surprised that this happens, and I'll bet it happens a lot more than we know. I am disappointed and surprised that Felicity Huffman is involved. Now that's funny! Felicity Huffman said, during her anti-Trump campaign: "As artists, women, and most importantly dedicated Americans, it is critical that we stand together in solidarity for the protection, dignity and rights of our communities." Yeah, she's all about dignity. That's why I said I'm surprised. And disappointed.

I looked at the list of people involved, it looks like the Northern California people are near Palo Alto. #NotShocked. Where did you see the list? I can’t read the link in the opening post because I don’t have a subscription.

Have they reported yet as to who paid the $6.5 million to get their kid in, and to which college? I'm curious about that one.

Hope Valley will never be the same! Wikipedia is quick on the draw. The actress’s pages are already updated to include the scandal.

I read the article and the list of people; and find this very interesting for many reasons.
1. As a mom who’s son just took his first SAT on Saturday; I am appalled at people. This is supposed to be one of the ways that he gets into the colleges that he wants for his major. It should also help with scholarships.
2. In the past couple of months, there was a news story about a girl who took her PSAT and bettered her SAT score by 300 points by studying the PSAT book. She was going to sue because she was accused of cheating on the SAT and they were not going to allow her to use that score.
3. About three years ago, my brother and I talked about a case in California. It was about a boy who was a straight A student, high SAT scores, president of the student council, quarterback for the football team for four years and played baseball for his high school. He had never been in trouble with the law and was a really good overall kid. He wanted to attend UCLA and there should have been no reason why he didn’t get in. As a matter of fact I don’t think he got into any University of California colleges.
My brother and I were shocked, when we heard about this case. But sadly now, I see this may be a small reason why he didn’t get in.
These people should really be ashamed of themselves.

OMG. I know that wealthy people contribute much monies to schools in order to have their children get in those schools, but this is paying to cheat on an exam.
Felicity and William, and Aunt Becky and her husband have stellar publicists because this truly shocks me. While I don't think it's right to pay a school for a place in the school, at least you're upfront about it. This was outright illegal AND it's teaching their kids that they are above the law. I truly hate anyone who feels like they are above the law.
FWIW, my daughter is at Boston College (not one of the schools, but a test school) and she definitely did not get in in any other way.
This one just floors me.

i just read that someone paid as high as $6 million in the bribe scheme. $6 million, really? couldn't they have just given their kid that money to help them start a business, buy a business, live off the interest while going to a lesser college, etc.? that's just crazy.

Out of all my friends and acquaintances in CA along with my sons friends in high school who all talked about where they were accepted, I only heard of 2 that were accepted into UCLA. It's a tough one to get into! One kids dad is a Dr and the others is a lawyer. Coincidence? I have another friend who bragged a few years ago that her Uncle is an alumni and big donor to Berkley, that he would get her daughter accepted there. Guess I will find out when she starts applying this fall. None of this surprises me though.

Politics aren't the issue here at all. Only one person made it about that, though. Most of us are reasonable enough to know that stuff like this is equally dispersed throughout people with money and/or power.

I graduated from USC. These stories were well known in the mid 90's. Students whose parents are found guilty need to be kicked out of school. They aren't just tarnishing the reputation of the school, but all students and alumni.

Colleges pay athletes under the guise of scholarships so they can have a winning team which influences donations given to the school from rick alumni etc. They are provided with tutors etc. Doesn't surprise me at all that people donate to the school as a way of procuring a spot for their kids.Always has been a tit for tat thing right done to the level of private schools for young kids.
But yeah on the SAT/ACT testing. I wonder if athletes have to meet those requirements to get admitted into post secondary education or if their athletic prowess gets them exemptions.

I don't think 'alumni' donations are anything new - probably more so for private schools though. I think the bigger thing here is, these were payments paid under the table directly to the coaches and administrators in some cases, not a donation through the school. This will involve NCAA sanctions, and probably cost other deserving kids scholarships in the future. The USC asst. AD and water polo coach, who reportedly received $1.3 mil and $250k respectively, have been fired. www.latimes.com/sports/usc/la-sp-college-admission-scam-coaches-usc-20190312-story.html

My son applied to USC this year and was deferred. Out of 48,000 only 1,000 were accepted in the first wave (and 25% of them would get the higher merit scholarships). 6,000 more are to be accepted. The competition is fierce. So sad to hear the values of these parents and what they pass on to their kids.
