If so, my thoughts are with you all. I hope you stay safe and that the fire and chemical fumes are gone soon.

There are a few peas near the fire. I'm 25 miles away in Houston and woke up to the cloud of smoke directly overhead. No wonder my eyes were itching when I woke up. Makes me wonder how much worse it is for those in the immediate vicinity.

It's coinciding with extreme levels of oak pollen, so most of us are suffering one way or another.

The wind seems to be blowing the smoke plume away from Deer Park itself, so it's not awful here. I'm still not feeling good though. Mostly allergy type symptoms. Itchy eyes and a scratchy throat. I had a doctor appointment in the medical center at 7 this morning and it's eerie how the smoke plume stretches as far as the eye can see. I could see the flames on the way home this morning, that was pretty unsettling. The fire is definitely not under control. I worry if it will keep spreading. There are a few peas near the fire. This is a picture (hopefully) from yesterday afternoon about 4:30. This is looking northeast from my work, about 13 miles away (near I45 and BW8). Looks like a big cloud-o-cancer. I'm so suspicious of the air quality reports. Today I can smell it in the office. Between smoke and pollen my throat hurts and I have a headache.

I've been inside all day and we're not running the AC, so it's stuffy but I didn't have the scratchy throat/fading voice today. All bets are off when I go outside...

I drive past it when I leave my husband's work. Wonder if you're in the same building??!

Wow, what is happening in Houston? First Deer Park now Baytown.
I live in Nederland, between Beaumont and Port Arthur, 2 huge refinery towns. Everyone is double checking everything down here.

There was a fire at an Exxon facility in Baytown on Saturday. Has something else happened there since? There was also an "incident" at a facility in LaPorte yesterday. They call them "incidents". There is an "incident" nearly every day in the area. Or a flare, or a restart cycle. Wow, what is happening in Houston? First Deer Park now Baytown. If you want to know what is happening at the facilities in the area, go to the app store (Google or apple) and search for the CAER app. Or go online, search caer online for the website.
Caer lists all the ongoing incidents, flares, restarts, fires, spills, drills, siren tests, etc...

That is great news. But I hope a lot of time is spent investigating how the hell that happened and regulating to minimize the chances of that happening again.

I got a robocall at 5 effing 45 this morning telling us that school IS in session today. I didn't realize that HISD was ever questioning canceling.

That is great news. But I hope a lot of time is spent investigating how the hell that happened and regulating to minimize the chances of that happening again. I've heard leak in line/fitting and I've heard tank overheated and the system that's supposed to counter it failed. Whether they can find out for sure or not remains to be seen. If there were eyes on the spot at the time of the initial flames, that would help. Forensic examination of the tank and components may not help because of all the damage.

We're back under a shelter in place order. Benzene detected at ITC facility, more fire reported, whole town under shelter in place.
