Those are cool!
When we first moved to Seattle (20 some odd years ago) I was told that when you interview at Microsoft they asked non-traditional questions. One being, why are manhole covers round?

Because they are bigger than the rim so won't fall in to the hole whilst a square or other shapes would fall in at different angles

Those are so cool. Seems they'd be collectable and hard to keep them from being stolen.

Hope they don’t get stolen. The unique New Orleans one’s were often stolen and replaced by plain new ones😔

Yes, it’s so they don’t fall down the hole they are covering.

I have a bunch of pictures of them from when I was there
That was the re-beginning of my obsession with textures

Theft is basically unheard of in Japan. If a Japanese person finds paper money on the street, or a wallet they don't keep it-they turn it into the local police office. It's one of the safest countries in the world to travel in as far as not worrying about pick pockets or getting your things stolen. I love Japan! These manhole covers are so cool and unique!

Round manhole covers won’t fall in no matter how it is put back in place, whereas square ones can fall in if inserted on the diagonal?

I love those. Sadly the first thing that came to mind was theft.
