We used to have a ban on assault rifles. It expired in 2004.

It is great to see a leader saying what she means and means what she says!
Great news about these laws being changed already. More countries should follow this example of leadership, and I include my own.

Your title isn’t correct - for those who don’t click on the article- they’re proposing legislation and hope to pass in mid-April, so nothings done yet. I have no clue if they’ll have any difficulty passing - I do know that New Zealand is filled with some of the kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet and I’m terribly sorry for all they’re going through.

Does the NRA lobby other country leaders and politicians like they do ours?
I wish all of America was on board with banning guns for average citizens. I don't know how so many can just shrug their shoulders when so many children and innocent people die by gun violence.

I very much doubt that they will have much difficulty considering that everyone, it seems, is behind her and her cabinet. The government, I have a feeling, is a coalition government so I would guess her cabinet is too. They would have already discussed it before they brought the bill to parliament and she wouldn't have commented on it publicly if she wasn't sure it would go through. it's only a matter of going through the legality of passage before it would be voted on and given the Royal Assent to become law really. I'm sure some of our NZ peas will be along to fill us in on the details further.

Here, when they brought in our Gun Laws the National Rifle Association of Great Britain were consulted and asked to advice. I'm sure they had a few objections re hunting/target shooting etc but they had no objection for it to be accepted and become law with very strict rules as to who was eligible to hold a gun license. Our Association isn't so active in promoting gun ownership as the US NRA is, they represent gun clubs/hunters and hobbyist and above all safety here.

If the circumstance and emotional climate is similar to Australia after the Port Arthur massacre, they’ll have no trouble passing it. The devastated reactions of New Zealanders, very much reminds me of the feeling back in 1996 back home. The Sporting Shooters Association was the big gun lobbying at the time. I can’t remember their take on it at the time, but it honestly wouldn’t have mattered - such was the devastation and horror by the general public and politicians alike. They were vocal, but they had nowhere near the political clout, funding and power that the NRA holds in this country.

There is broad political support for the changes announced yesterday with the National Party (main opposition party) and the Greens saying they support the ban on personal ownership of military style weapons.
The government coalition (Labour and New Zealand First) has a confidence and supply agreement with the Greens and Labour, NZ First and the Greens would have enough votes to pass the legislation even without National’s support.
The way the changes are framed - with exemptions for guns most often used on farms and for sporting use will, I think mean that the legislation will be supported by most people across the country. Federated Farmers, which lobbies on behalf of its 26,000 farmer members has already announced its support for the reforms.
There has already been an immediate change to the legislation as of 3pm yesterday when the Governor-General signed an Order in Council reclassifying a wider range of semi-automatic weapons under the Arms Act. This means that all of the weapons being banned under the amendments announced yesterday are now categorised as weapons requiring an E endorsement on a firearms licence which has to be approved by the Police and no new endorsements will be approved pending introduction of the legislation.
The interim measure will stop the sale of MSSAs and assault rifles to people with A category gun licences. This was done because there was concern about weapons being stockpiled in the meantime.
