“Given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations" So, would a trip to play a sport - let's hypothetically say golf - to a state where you own a resort - let's hypothetically say Florida - be considered a worthy program that deserves out tax dollars? I'm thinking such field trips should instead enjoy robust support from private donations.

Did she still end it with - we cannot fund it all but there are some non proft organizations that can help? Here you go: “Given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, ( BECAUSE WE HAVE TO GIVE BILLIONAIRES TRILLIONS IN TAX CUTS INSTEAD SO THEY CAN TAKE THAT MONEY OUT OF OUR ECONOMY) particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations" ETA: Special Olympics is not an ordinary organization. It IS special and is for everyone who wants to participate, regardless of their disability. The Special Olympics are part of an international program for athletes. The federal government does not need to fund her private charter schools of which 25% are failing according to the statement from Mark Pocan and she refused to answer when he asked how she planning on recouping those dollars!! There, fixed it for your Betsy.

Imagine being so rich you never have to work for the rest of your life, or you could spend all your time doing good for people, and instead you would prefer to steal money from people with disabilities. What a truly grotesque character you must be to do this.

She showed she was vile and unable to do the job or answer basic questions at her hearings. I blame the Senators that voted Yes to put her in this position of power. Mainly Cory Gardner who tried to excuse his vote of yes by saying the people calling his office and telling him to vote no were paid and not even from CO. I guess I also blame the two who voted to move her out of the sub committee vote as "it is fair to let the whole floor vote on her". No, that is the purpose of the subcommittee ya dunderhead!

Betsy DeVos' utterly botched call for Special Olympics funding cuts, explainedAnalysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large Updated 5:48 PM ET, Thu March 28, 2019 (CNN)Stop me if you've heard this one before: Betsy DeVos has committed a massive public relations foible and is making it worse by refusing to own up to her mistake. ** And the truth of it is that we're not even spending very much federal money on Special Olympics. Last year, Congress appropriated $17.6 million to Special Olympics programs. That's almost nothing when you consider that the budget for the Department of Education in 2018 was more than $68 BILLION. Which is why picking this hill to die on is political malpractice by DeVos. And I'm not even sure what to call her attempt -- in the wake of her testy Capitol Hill appearance -- to, uh, explain her position. ** Titled "Secretary DeVos Corrects the Record on Trump Administration Support for Students with Disabilities," the statement released on Wednesday reads, in part: "It is unacceptable, shameful and counterproductive that the media and some members of Congress have spun up falsehoods and fully misrepresented the facts ... "...The Special Olympics is not a federal program. It's a private organization. I love its work, and I have personally supported its mission. Because of its important work, it is able to raise more than $100 million every year. There are dozens of worthy nonprofits that support students and adults with disabilities that don't get a dime of federal grant money. But given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations." ** Sooooooo ... the media and Democrats in Congress have "spun up falsehoods" about whether or not DeVos proposed cuts to the Special Olympics. But, she did propose cuts to the Special Olympics because "the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations." Got that? The media reported the story accurately. DeVos, as she has done for each of the past two years, proposed cutting money for Special Olympics programs at schools out of her department's budget. Democrats -- and many Republicans -- raised a stir. DeVos, backed into a corner by her own proposal, lashed out at the media for, uh, reporting on that proposal. But wait! It's gets even worse for DeVos! On Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump overrode her proposed cuts to the Special Olympics in a back-and-forth with reporters. "The Special Olympics will be funded, I just told my people," Trump said. "I have overridden my people. We're funding the Special Olympics," he added. DeVos spent the week defending indefensible cuts to a program everyone loves. Cuts that had zero chance of being implemented by a Democratic-controlled House. And then, when things went sideways, DeVos' boss -- aka the President of the United States -- took a chainsaw and cut off the branch that she had edged out on.What a disaster. ** Link: www.cnn.com/2019/03/28/politics/betsy-devos-special-olympics/index.htmlShe must be so very proud!!

I can not believe I am sorta defending this. The special Olypics was founded by Eunice Shriver in 1968. She was the sister John(killed in 1963) and Robert Kennedy (killed in 1968). They had a sister was had mental health issues. While it is a worthwhile cause, I can see how this was ill conceived in the beginning. This should be a philanthropic endeavor to begin with. It may have been that, because of the cache of the Kennedy name, funding was approved. With the Kennedy name I think the money could have be raised outside of the government through wealthy donors. My person belief would be to put the money into teachers salaries or other grants to aid public education. Now, with that said, trump is continuing to fund his golf buddy, Jack Nicklaus’s charity to the tune of $20 million. link

So unless we are going to start insisting on 100% private funding for all school athletics I don’t think it is okay. Even then, truthfully. But at least it would be more equitable.

The funding for Special Olympics that Vos is talking about is not just for competing in sports. It's for inclusive health, unified schools and leadership. SO does a lot more than just provide a chance to compete in sports.

Just how stupid does she think we are?

He explained that the traditional special olympics program IS funded by philanthropy. This is specifically referring to programs that kids involved in schools. I'm trying to link a page from their website but can't get it to copy.

So if Trump was against the cuts and the Secretary of Education was against the cuts, who proposed and approved the proposed budget with the cuts? Who is running this circus?

Our son will be participating in unified sports next year. He's had to be away from our home district for grades 4-8 due to mild cognitive impairment programming cuts, but the program is available in our home district high school, which happens to be one of the few districts in the state that participates in unified sports. We cannot wait to be back in our home district and have him participate. He truly is counting down the days. I was devastated to hear of the news of potential cuts and sent emails to everyone I could. I hope all our communication helped!

His cousin Tim Shriver is the head now, but I had to smile when Joe called his cousin Timmy several times. We do the same thing with our cousin, we are all in our 70s and still call him Bobby. We have called him that all our lives...
