linkNPR... ”I'm getting tired of the novelty of ... the first female governor of this state. The first female African-American mayor of this city," Notre Dame's head coach of women's basketball said. "When is it going to become the norm instead of the exception?" “We Don't Have Enough Women In Power': Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw Goes Viral” “Muffet McGraw, the two-time championship-winning head coach of women's basketball at The University of Notre Dame, was dancing a jig and celebrating Friday night after leading her team to victory over the University of Connecticut. The NCAA women's basketball championship game is now set for Sunday — setting up a possible third win for McGraw — with reigning national champion Notre Dame's Fighting Irish taking on No. 1 seed the Lady Bears of Baylor University. But this past Thursday, McGraw's mood was more serious when answering a question about her recently reported commitment to never hire another male coach for her staff. "Did you know that the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced in 1967, and it still hasn't passed?" she began. "We need 38 states to agree that discrimination on the basis of sex is unconstitutional. We've had a record number of women running for office and winning. And still, we have 23 percent of the House and 25 percent of the Senate." McGraw was responding to a question about being the "voice" of female coaches in college athletics after University of Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, who won 1,098 games with the Lady Volunteers for more than 38 years, died in 2016. McGraw's two-minute response, touching on the long history of sexism in many American institutions, went viral. " I'm getting tired of the novelty of ... the first female governor of this state. The first female African-American mayor of this city," she said. "When is it going to become the norm instead of the exception? How are these young women looking up and seeing someone that looks like them, preparing them for the future? We don't have enough female role models. We don't have enough visible women leaders. We don't have enough women in power."
She said girls are socialized to think "men run the world." Where better to counter that narrative than in sports, she asked. "When you look at men's basketball and 99 percent of the jobs go to men, why shouldn't 100 or 99 percent of the jobs in women's basketball go to women? Maybe it's because we only have 10 percent women athletic directors in Division I. People hire people who look like them. And that's the problem." In 1972, Title IX enacted gender equity policies in student athletics as part of a law. Two years later, more than 90 percent of women's teams in college sports had female coaches, according to the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota. That number has fallen drastically. The center's newest report based on data from last year found the percentage of female head coaches had increased slightly from previous years, but only to 41.8 percent. The group took data from 86 institutions that were part of the NCAA Division I "big time" conferences. In basketball specifically, the percent of women coaching women was 59.3 in 2018. Notre Dame's Jessica Shepard responded to McGraw, "Talk that talk then coach." Notre Dame forward Brianna Turner, who scored her 2,000th career point Friday, just wrote on Twitter: "Take notes." Samantha Brunelle, a high-profile incoming recruit to Notre Dame, tweeted the video of McGraw's answer, saying it was "one of the many reasons why Notre Dame was the place for me." "I aspire to be like her one day," Brunelle told the South Bend Tribune of South Bend, Ind. "She stands for women so much. She has a huge voice to help give us women more of a platform." Good question. When will it be the norm to see women in power?
Hillary lost by 70,000 votes spread across three states. How many of those votes and others who voted for trump were voting against the idea of a woman as president? We will never know for sure. But it’s a real possibility the reason Hillary lost was due to the simple fact that she was a woman.

Ditto. And equally true for men and women of color. I’m sick and tired of white men being the default.

MSNBC...
”Analysis: The president's approval rating has been a flatline, which means he may need a rival as unpopular as Hillary Clinton in 2016 to pull off a second term.”
But the real question here was why was Hillary “unpopular “?
All of the current women running for President this time around have run into the “likability” buzz saw. While the men candidates have been pretty much been given a pass.

linkMSNBC... ”With a record number of women running for president, why are the men getting all the attention?” Good question. The link is a video of Joy Reid’s show and the discussion about this subject. She makes the point the media has been talking a lot about the three “B” boys. Biden who is too touchy feely. Bernie who says he will release his tax returns but hasn’t. Beto ,the boy wonder, who lost a race against a really bad person. Meanwhile the women are offering solutions to the problems that face most Americans and are getting very little press.

Even this guy is getting more press then the female candidates..
MTP..
”WATCH: @chucktodd asks @petebuttigieg what Democrats should see in him ideologically.
Buttigieg: "There's a lot more to this than an ideological analysis especially with the ideology in our country so scrambled."

I watched the game on Friday and was thrilled with her. Then, listened to her comments and was having some giddy laughs over the juxtaposition of such powerful words coming out of the mouth of someone named "Muffet".

I don't understand why women put up with the fact that there are virtually no women coaching men's college sports, while lots of men coach women's college sports.

It will take a long time. Hopefully every 2 years, change comes to Washington and at some point the majority of members of the governing body won't be white males.

I agree, it is tiresome. Tiresome that it’s taken so long to gain so little. Tiresome that not 10 years ago I sat in a college class and listened to a teen talk about there being “no glass ceiling” and that there was no need for feminism. Tiresome that white men are the default and held up as a measuring stick for the rest of us.

But the real question here was why was Hillary “unpopular “? She wasn't unpopular. She got 65,853,514 votes - Obama in 2012 got 65,915,795 votes, yet he was not considered "unpopular." Clinton won the popular vote - and lost due to the quirks of the electoral college. Saying she was unpopular is a cover for reality - there was Russian interference into our electoral process. The Trump campaign used information and was aided by a sophisticated plan to use propaganda to sway votes in key districts. Without that interference, the popular vote aligns with the electoral college vote and nobody is talking about how "unpopular" Hillary is. Republican leaders love it when you accept the assumption that Hillary was unpopular, because it takes the focus off of interference in the election by outside countries. The real question is - why is the person who gets more votes not the president? And why is it that every single time a candidate wins the popular vote but loses the electoral college, it's the Republican president who benefits? If we a system where one party benefits from loopholes like this every single time, but the other party never benefits, shouldn't there even be a little bit of concern? I have no doubt whatsoever that if the Democratic candidate had been the one to benefit, the GOP would have gotten rid of the electoral college as soon as humanly possible.

While the article touches on the fact that female coaches were the norm for female teams until the 1970s, what it glosses over is the fact that those jobs paid significantly less than men's coaching jobs. it was when the head coaching jobs of women's teams began to rise that men started taking them.

Yes Hillary won the popular vote. But there was also a segment of voters who would vote “for anybody but Hillary”.
There are those who blamed the Democrats for trump by making Hillary their nominee because so many people disliked her.
Democrats have been warned that if they put up another candidate like Hillary in 2020 it will all but mean another 4 years of trump.
Here is the weird thing. Her likability numbers were high when she was First Lady, when she was a Senator, and when she was Secretary of State.
Bur as she put it, when she asked for a promotion, her liability numbers went down.
Why? What changed?

The Atlantic...
”“I intend to win this" is one of the many lines Kamala Harris offers on the road to 2020. But “has the United States dealt with its own racism and misogyny enough to elect a black woman president?” asks @lizweil:”
We know this country can elect a person of color president. But the real question is, can this country elect a woman president?

There are voters every single election who will vote for "anyone but..." There were many who would vote for "anyone but Obama" for whatever reason. Does that mean he was also unpopular? There are many voters who would vote for "anyone but Trump" - therefore he is also an unpopular choice.
"So many people" disliked Hillary - but she won the primaries for her party. Is that not how one becomes the nominee for a party in the general election? Some people may not like her - but more people chose her as their candidate than any of the other candidates.
I read an article about her popularity and promotions, and how each time she wanted more power people somehow disliked her more. The issue is this: 1. She's intelligent and competent. Once in a position, she was able to do the duties of the position well. Nobody notices when you're doing well, so her popularity is higher. 2. She asks for a promotion/more power. Oh no! A woman wants to take a man's role! Oh no! What will we do! Must. Stop. Hillary. At. All. Costs! The world will simply be destroyed if we let some woman tell us what to do. Who does she think she is? 3. Hillary obtains promotion, does job competently. Repeat cycle.
I think that sadly, there are still many, many American voters who have a problem with women in a position of power. Allowing a Black man to be president was one thing. Yeah, he had too much melanin - but at least he had a penis, so that was respectable. But a WOMAN? Are you going to let a WOMAN tell us what to do? She's a woman! She's never served in combat! She'll get her period and be all emotional! She won't be able to control her emotions, she'll be manipulated by foreign leaders everywhere! Nobody will respect us, we'll be the laughingstock of the world with a president like this! She'll go around saying stupid things because she doesn't understand how anything works - smaller female brain and all that. She'll be unable to negotiate from a position of strength because her tiny woman brain won't be able to make good deals, she'll be too busy thinking about other stuff and it will be distracting. And if none of that was enough to make you understand the folly of electing her, need I remind you that SHE'S A WOMAN??!!!

Sometimes, I have to sit my DH down and keep him from spiraling out over work stress or life stress, but people will dismiss that as the weight of great responsibility. If I did the same thing, I'd be labeled emotional & hormonal.

If I did the same thing, I'd be labeled emotional & hormonal. It's the penis. Evidently, they're very heavy and it causes men to feel overwhelmed at how much they are expected to do to keep the world running. Women can't handle the responsibility, because hormones. We simply can't begin to understand how much responsibility there is in being a bearer of external genitalia. But it obviously confers some sorts of super powers on the bearer - extra intelligence, organizational ability, leadership qualities, etc. All things that we women of little brain can certainly not begin to understand. I'm in the same boat, BTW. My DH is WAY more unstable when it comes to work and taking things personally.
